Agreed. Marriage is not taken at its truth. Rather, as a formal public ascertain that is subject to being revoked or defiled when it strains one or both of the participants. Why is it that divorce doesn’t serve as an equal option to a viable end in a disingenuous union? Murder more plausible?

Yes. Always get to know how your partner handles finances. I almost married someone when I was very young who wrote bad cheques, stole from his parents etc. Came to my senses and married the best man I've ever known. We're a full-on, honest team. People think they can love without trust and think it's a reason to marry. My opinion is that there is no real love without trust. Trust comes first. If you can't 100% trust them ... just don't.

Honestly, I have 2 young kids... a girl and a boy.. and seeing how much naive people can become fixated on somebody (including my younger self to some degree) and knowing how many manipulative and even psychopathic individuals are out there, it makes me want to have some kind of social structure around that prevents them from engaging in conventional dating culture at a young age. We see how dysfunctional mainstream dating has become too. When young, it's hard not to be naive... one should overcome their naivete before engaging with finding love. That's not to say they should be jaded, but just prepared and some wisdom.

This reminds me of the Lori and Mark Hacking case, in which the husband Mark lied to his wife about being in college and getting accepted into medical school, then murdered her rather than admit his deception. Hacking was also a seemingly friendly guy who was generally well-liked and active in his church, and was clumsy as hell about covering up the murder. And credit to the Salt Lake City PD: it took then a few weeks, rather than a few years to get a warrant for his arrest. They saw through his "my wife was kidnapped" story within hours of hearing it.

Yes!!!! Me too!!! All cases like this are so sad and awful. No accountability whatsoever. I can't even begin to understand how they come to the conclusion that murder is the best possible answer. Killing the one you chose to spend the rest of your life -- people who choose the murder option clearly have no idea what love is. I wish there was some kind of evolutionary human trait/ability that would warn us of people like that... Too bad there isn't some kind of hive mind ability we can tap into.🔮👀🙊🧿🧠🧬⚡

I’d give anything for a $1500 mortgage, that’s less than I paid for rent for a 1 bedroom apartment in 2010 when you said they were paying that much for their mortgage. The cost of housing in Seattle is becoming brutal. Sorry, I got sidetracked by the mortgage cost. I have noticed a trend in one spouse killing the other recently. Maybe it’s the content that I am viewing, but I don’t understand why people aren’t just getting divorced? Is it about insurance? I don’t get it. I’ll never understand how someone can hurt or kill another person. Especially someone you claim to have loved.

Each person needs to be on the very same page with finances, Childs, house chores, savings, how holidays are going to be spent, and tons more. One of the couple needs to nip things in the bud the moment things are not shared between the couple. It doesn't have to end up with murder....or divorce.

Your analysis of this feels like it articulates so many of the thoughts I felt in my gut when it first happened (just down the block from my family). This story haunted me for a while, felt so helpless that he seemed to just get off scot free. What you describe about his fear of embarrassment battling against his low conscientiousness and the ultimate shame it gave rise to within him that made him feel he had no choice but to murder his wife... So spot on, I believe. And the evidently almost-childlike trust his wife apparently had in him, it's so heartbreaking. This is such a tragic and pitiful story. Thanks for a great analysis.

I find it hard to believe that one's wife wouldn't at least be suspicious that something was not right with the finances. Those mortgages can push people into doing crazy things. That short on the signs of a celebrity grandiose narcissist was really interesting and helpful.

What makes someone lie like this? How do you prevent it in children? I think i've learned it's a combination of nature/nurture and that we are born with temperment and this can lead to feelings of shame and lying to cover the shame. I'm watching my nephew who has seemed anxious since birth, and attempts to manipulate others to keep in control. He refuses to talk about negative feelings and will absolutely deny any bad actions. But, he will follow the pre-set rules, to a point, especially if it gets him something he wants. These days he says he's not interested, or points out something good he has already done, attempting to talk you out of getting him to do something he is afraid of failing at. I really don't think anyone is shaming him and the right words are said to try and respect his worries. Except for asking him to name his feelings and encouraging insight. Maybe I'm expecting too much from an 8 year old. But, his younger brother of 5 can easily say how he feels without self-judgment. It's sad to see a kid so uncomfortable with himself. Thanks for listening.

Can you analyze last names, pleasant sounding ones, like Gramde versus less so, like Firkus? And crimes and self-esteem 🤔

Values or the lack of such as extreme self consciousness and self centeredness that lead to this type of crime is sobering; all adults should see a therapist and work out your defects of character. So sad this case. I hope he thinks about his foolishness everyday.

Wow. THEY got "shot" by a "black man" and he ran away with nothing because THEY were shot ... righto. Over here, that would be called a "Tui" Second wife got out in time. Very sorry for his first wife, Heidi and her family. You can't always know your loved one, sadly, but surely she knew not to get into that much debt regarding the house? Or did they have the arrangement that he'd do it all? Never do that. xxx Poor love.

Hi Dr. Grande! Big fan :) Could you please analyse/speculate about the case of Jeffrey Hazelwood? The Guy Fawkes impersonator? I would like to understand that one since no one seems to have diagnosed him with something in particular even though he's clearly short of some marbles? Thx

I know it was 2007, but $215,000 for a house? An old 2 bedroom townhouse in my city just went for 1.8 million. $1550 a month? You'd be lucky to afford the rent on a single bedroom, if you have a roommate.

I heard this story before. He gave a great description of the imaginary black guy to a sketch artist. The cops found him and showed him the sketch. Black guy said yea that’s me and I like breaking into houses but I didn’t shoot anyone. Turns out he was in jail when it happened.

I think I missed something. How did Heidi get shot in the back? Wouldn’t she have been facing the threat, or facing where he thought the threat was coming from? Or if she was totally confused, wouldn’t she have been facing Nick? Did he purposely scheme to get her to be facing away from him when he shot her so he didn’t have to see her face? Did he place her between himself and the alleged threat (which really wasn’t there, I know)? I just can’t get over the fact that not only did he pull this scheme and murder his wife, he shot her in the back like some cowardly villain in an old cowboy movie. And then it took justice 13 year to catch up to him. SMH

The whole story about seeking shelter in the garage is bogus. First, if armed a husband will send the wife deeper into the house (such as locking herself in a bedroom or bathroom or possibly to a phone extension); and second, if deciding to go downstairs toward the source of the threat for some reason he would undoubtedly lead the way. In such a threatened situation (if true) the husband doesn't want the wife anywhere close to him until he has dealt with whatever is happening.
