A buddy of mine happened to catch the pilot when it aired and recorded it on his Tivo (yeah, we're that old) so he could show the rest of our circle of friends. It immediately became our Friday night ritual to gather over a few "drinks" and have our minds blown at how good this show was. Still one of the best animated series ever made.

36:12 Here’s another fun symbol influenced by culture for Karl to enjoy: Spartan’s valued their shields more than their swords because their shields were not for themselves, but for the soldier fighting next to them. The trust that spartan would have had to have to give his shield to Jack perfectly matched the trust Jack showed giving up his sword. This show is poetically more and more beautiful the better you understand it.

Ninja Garb: The trope of black clothing is a conflation from Noh theater; set-changers (who you were supposed to ignore) were dressed in all black so they could do necessary scene changes without disturbing the action. Real-life ninja were known to where the customary garb of wherever and whoever they were supposed to be. In class-ridden feudal Japan this was a horrifying strategy, as your enemy might be a peasant one day and a member of the nobility the next, you could never know who was who and this caused existential dread.

My main problem with the finale is that Ashi vanished several days after killing Aku, along with it happening AT THEIR WEDDING. She should've just vanished when Aku was slain, which will make it feel like a bittersweet ending, because both sides would've come at the same time, rather then a sweet ending with a bitter epilogue

I am always annoyed by the Trope of "they will disappear because time was changed" It kind of suggests the universe has some type of autocorrect feature. Time is a force like gravity, it pushes things forward. It doesn't check the past. I am actually more OK with it here because it would just be the gods enforcing what they think is order.

23:59 I think Karl will appreciate the ladybug reference even more when he understands Japanese symbolism. In Japanese mythology, the ladybug is a symbol of self-sacrifice, as the black spots on it’s back represent the bad Karma destined for others than the ladybug bears so that others can have a peaceful life that they may or may not deserve. It’s perfect for Jack. It’s a symbol of self-sacrificing grace and mercy.
@BWtalksАй бұрын
Jack would have known this, and would have smiled in understanding.
@benwagner5089Ай бұрын
Never would have known this if I hadn't watched the movie Bullet Train and had it explained there. He bore the hardship, and now the ladybug has moved on, leaving Jack with the good karma he deserves.
@BWtalksАй бұрын
@@benwagner5089 I love mythology and I’ve grown up reading stories from many different cultures. Bullet train was a great movie and I admittedly didn’t expect that reference to show up in it. I liked how they did that. Samurai Jack is a MUCH deeper show than it gets credit for as well.

in the "jump good" episode, jack also makes it into a portal, but next episode is still back in time. also also, should do an episode on PRIMAL. mentioning the experimental nature of the archers episode, having nearly no dialogue and such, primal just takes that to the nth degree. only a handful of words are spoken through the entire series but its still so enthralling, and you can feel the dna of samurai jack throughout.

You know, aside from that one weird tangential episode where we completely cut away from the overarching story so we can watch Charles Darwin fight an escaped convict.

My issue with the original ending is that it invalidates all the sacrifices Jack made leading up to it. If time travel uses Back to the Future rules, then literally every time he gave up on going back to the past to save people, he was choosing to suffer for no reason, because he could save them ALL by just going back and making it never happen. Multiverse means saving those people had tangible meaning. Also: not even a passing mention of Scaramouche? He's like... the main recurring antagonist for Season 5.
@patrickzantomasterАй бұрын
Well, Jack and by Extension we didnt know that. For all we knew, Jack could’ve created a new Timeline by being flung into the future. Jack chooses to Save These people because he can’t comprehend what time Travel actually means in this case. He chooses to do the right thing with the Information he’s given. And if he doesn’t succeed to go back, he simply slays aku in the present.
@ccggeniusАй бұрын
@@patrickzantomaster The thing is, using BttF rules means his presence in the future is a paradox. If he goes back in time to stop the future from ever happening, then there's no future for him to have been thrown to. Multiverse theory is the only thing that made sense under those circumstances, unless he ultimately fails to defeat Aku in the past and Aku just like... forgets about it by the time the future gets there.

My top to the “name a character that’s been through worse” is Guts from beserk. At the end of the day he’s fighting what is the definition of a hopeless struggle. Trunks and Jack largely both saw what happened to their worlds after the big bad. Without spoiling much, Guts had nothing and knew nothing but too struggle forward. Not out of anything but an animalistic will to live. after a lifetime of blood and guts he builds a family out of the band of the hawk. It’s just sad what happens from there. He’s called the struggler for a reason

As blasphemous as this might be to say, I think the show might have overall been better if we never got any definitive ending to Jack's story. Let me present you with a possible scenario. It's the early 2000s and the show is still on its original run. The episode "Jack and the Travelling Creatures", where Jack fights the Guardian of the time portal and is rebuffed, ends with the Guardian revealing that Jack won't use the portal today, but will in the future, hinting that he will one day succeed in his quest. That episode was in Jack's third season, but consider for a moment that it was the final episode of the fourth season instead. The last episode of the show before the long hiatus. And imagine too that that's where it ultimately ended, with no fifth season. Not a definitive final fight with Aku and a resolution, but instead a promise that Jack will continue to have adventures and will ultimately triumph. That hope as the final note of the show when it ends in 2004. I think if that had been what happened, the show would have been perfect :)

I remember an episode where Jack is chased by these Predator Cat-like bounty hunters. I remember Jack being way up high on an antenna at the climax cornered by them. The moment I remember most is Jack breathing and doing kata or tai-chi motions as the music hits, and he is prepared for them. He ultimately earned their respect and let him live. Hey Karl or Lucas, are those Cat-Predators in the finale, too?

I would assume that "Blending into the Light" would be the opposite of blending into the shadows, with blending into shadows you wear something dark so that your color is indistinguishable from the dark, but with the light, well you can't do that Sight is Literally Light based, so what you do is, instead of enveloping yourself in darkness you wear something so brightly white, that it causes the light to reflect off of you like light off of freshly fallen snow....
