A couple of scruples on your vivisection of this situation, 1) Why were Nehru, MKG, and Patel never sent to Cellular Jail Andaman when they fought for freedom with such ferocity? As far as I read history, their jails were well-furnished mansions with all the facilities. 2) Why do we have to compare Bhagat Singh to Savarkar? There shouldn't be any apple-to-orange comparison, as both were devout freedom fighters and atheists, but their tactics differed. Netaji Bose shouldn't be compared to Bhagat Singh either. :) 3) Savarkar was a Brahmin who still strongly denounced "caste discrimination" and founded separate temples for Dalits, which made him a "great human being.". 4) It looks like, while in jail, he realised that it was not the Britishers who were against the Hindu civilisation but Islamic aggression, which proved true in 1947 and Hindu genocides thereafter in Pakistan and Bangladesh. So, he came out and never participated actively in the freedom struggle but called for "Hindu unity," as he realised otherwise Hindu civilisation would be in danger. Look around, see how demography is changing, look around in Europe, see how communal tensions befall that continent where Islamic aggression by Pakistanis and Bangladeshis jeopardised peace and unity. 5) Who are you to judge a great freedom fighter like Savarkar? Your motto is to find faults in him, rather than admire his great traits and streaks. He was a human being, so he had his negatives but nevertheless one of the greatest freedom fighters and patriots IND has ever produced. 6) When you are that liberal, why did you flee Pakistan in 1947? Subhash Bose called him British collaborator at least three times in 1939,1940 and 1942 because of Savarkar's open support to british interests as president of Hindu Mahasabha. Also Savarkar was against Congress efforts against british and he supported Muslim league in three provinces. He has mentioned this himself in his presidential address. Bose blacklisted Hindu Mahasabha in 1939 as congress president because of his efforts of communalizing masses. So would you say that Bose called him a traitor because BJP claimed him?

Savarkar & Aurobinda Ghosh were the first generation of revolutionaries who started violent revolt. Who were the leaders before them? A O Hume, W C Bonnerji, Dadabhai Naoroji, Surendranath Banerjee, Gokhale... They who believed in pleading before the British to earn the rights of Indians. It is not right to compare these early rebels with Bhagat Singh, Azad, etc Need I remind that Punjab was fully loyal to British even after winds of rebellion started blowing in Bengal & Maharastra, right till 1919 Jallianwala Bagh? The fact that British became strongest under Curzon cannot be missed. British overlordship was a truth that rebels of that era had to live with. Aurobinda Ghosh, Savarkar, Tilak were well educated. Aurobindo motivated rebels like Khudiram Bose, Prafulla Chaki. Barindra used to train rebels in bomb & pistol usage. Savarkar was himself involved in subversive activities in Europe earlier. If they could no longer incite violent agitation against British, they could build up the confidence of the nation through their writing. That is what they did after writing mercy petition.
