Velka is the Oeden of Dark Souls

Awesome work as always! Very interesting stuff. I do have some notes for Lokey's consideration however. First something minor in response to something mentioned in passing, which is the notion that Priscilla 'has scales' and Seath doesn't. Priscilla does not have stone scales of immortality, she has the same white scales as Seath. If Seath was not meant to have any scales whatsoever it seems bizarre to go out of their way to make him covered in visible scales. Also, every non-immortal draconic being has regular scales despite being scaleless in the relevant sense. Regarding the matter of stone, fire and crystals... the essence of a crystal is its uniformity, its lack of disparity or differentiation of any kind. Stone on the other hand is relatively heterogenous. Introducing disaparity to stone on its own shouldn't straightforwardly produce crystal on this basis, if it's happening - and I'm not arguing that it isn't - it would seem to be through some process that ultimately produces the antithesis of disparity. Also to consider: If crystal/magic = stone+fire then shouldn't Seath should be the only dragon who isn't affiliated with the moon, since he lacks the stone scales in question? Regarding your very confident assertion about the betrothal of Gwynevere to Seath, it's a bit unclear where it's coming from. There is one issue with the theory that I think is particularly problematic, which is this: If Gwynevere and Seath were married, their union sanctioned by Gwyn and otherwise official, then a crossbreed like Priscilla would be the expected product of this union and NOT aberrant, shameful or unexpected. Even if Priscilla's mother were instead Velka, the existence of the crossbreed would still be easily explicable by the existence of an officially sanctioned marriage between God and Dragon, and Priscilla resembles Seath and Gwynevere closely enough that players often assume they are her parents anyways. If Velka is acknowledged/supposed as Priscilla's mother, as you do here, then some version of 'Seathevere' existing ever doesn't have a lot going for it. The Duke preying on the maidens of the Princess makes enough sense on its own. Maybe I'm missing something though.
@annointedbytalos5673 Жыл бұрын
I think it's in the association with Priscilla's power of lifehunt which is dark. Moonlight and sunlight wouldn't create something like that. So it's not that Priscilla is crossbreed it's that her affinity shows her true heritage, like how Gwyndolin was forced to be a woman because of their affinity to the moon and not the sun. "It's unbecoming of a kings son so it's a kings daughter actually." At least that's what I think is meant by all this.

Lokey has a tremendous amount of evidence of his ideas, but I feel he makes links where proper evidence really doesn't exist, and much of it seems like circumstantial evidence or personal conjecture (It is Dark Souls). He may be correct, and he is in many cases, but without positive confirmation I can't help but take a lot of it as headcanon.
@Elfen3652 жыл бұрын
I like a lot of his ideas but I agree the links are not always there and the way he talks comes off a bit "this is the only truth". The other thing with Lokey is that even though the ideas are interesting, he kind of doesn't let the room breath whenever he appears in the podcast in a way Sin or Sophie or other guests never do

I haven't heard a lot of his stuff but i'm at the part where Velka is Priscilla's mum and yeah, i'm not convinced. It's the kind of thing where, if you start with the hypothesis that it's true, you can kind of see it (painted world is full of Velka stuff etc), and at the end of the day, maybe it is true for all we know, but that way of thinking of assuming x and seeing if it fits and, if it does, cannonize it and see where it goes from there, can lead to random conclusions and reduce the text to one possible intepretation at the cost of all others. Tbh all DS lore creators are more or less guilty of using this flawed reasoning sometimes, but it's always fun to listen to people who are passionate about the games enthusiastically sharing their insight and theories. I will say though, one of the reasons i love this channel is that sophie doesn't do this at all imo. She's really analytical when explaining her understanding of the lore and she is always careful when heading into conjecture territory, even if when she is 100% sure that she is right. In any case, i really enjoyed listening to Lokey here and i'll definitely check out more of his stuff.

I feel like he assumes that Miyazaki had a really "set-in-stone" story/lore for the games in his head, which may not be the case (Miyazaki may just be pulling George Lucas's and filling in the blanks later, like with the midichlorians thing etc.) But that really is my only critique. I really love his passion for the games and I really saw a new light with the games from him and other lore-lovers; I was one of those guys who really just thought Dark Souls had very little plot and that it was all just intentionally shrouded in mystery to fill in for the fact that there is just little detail.

Love when Lokey is on the show. His conclusions obviously excite him and that is a great thing to hear and see come together. To those in comments saying that they feel there is conjecture where there is little evidence. I remind you, that is exactly how the game lore is. And the so called canon story doesn’t truly exist outside of Miyazaki’s mind. And he has stated in interviews that he doesn’t want to impose that on players because he wants us to interpret the story as ‘we’ see it. What lore creators make is merely that. Don’t like it? Maybe write your own. 🤷♂️

A misconception in the community is that the localization somehow happened in isolation from any contextualising from Miazaki and Fromsoft and this is categorically false. The game has never had a fully japanese version and it was always intended to be presented with spoken english. To this end Miazaki and Ryan Morris the lead translator from Frognation had a close working relationship and went through coming up with the english script together. It is morris that is behind Arch Trees and Solairs flair in commenting grossly incandescense all of it directly approved by Miazaki. Nothing was put into the game without first going through fromsoft and the localization if anything is one of a rare degree of cooperation. What would be more useful than to look at the japanese text as truth is to look at both english and japanese text to get a whole, the english is as canon as the japanese in this case. Let's get past this :)
@LAAV696 ай бұрын
Thanks for saying this. I had to stop reading Lowkey’s Abyssal Archive in part because he trashes the localization as “incorrect” whenever he decides specific word choices don’t confirm his (honestly bad) literal engagement with the text. Saying the translation obfuscates “the truth” with “flowery poetry” reads like a fan who treats plot like a nail. It’s ironic for him to say the official English translations are full of “errors” when his own translations of item descriptions come off really amateurish and devoid of narrative prose. For example to way he butchers the description of the Black Separation Crystal.

Moonlight is an interaction between fire and stone? This could use some elaboration :) As to the dragons ambitions and agency. We don't know how ambitious the dragons where or indeed if they had civilization however it's reasonable to infer a long period of time passed since the advent of fire until the war with the dragons that is to say from primitives to full platemail, kings, armies and the like. If we think of how these people must have developed in the shadow of these dragons and to say that these dragons would have no civilization or to not entertain that they where the probable rulers of that age's civilizations seems strange to me. They must have been an insurmountable force before their weakness was discovered as beings of stone with an existence beyond life and human comprehension and older and wiser than time. Just some thoughts.

I'll never get behind the idea of a Seath Gwynevere union. Virtually entirely unsupported by the text and just way too weird and gross. And not in a Miyazaki way. Maybe if GRRM wrote Dark Souls lol
