The idea that either coach would have allowed the game to get to that 3rd possession of sudden death is false in my opinion. If the first team scored 7, the second team would have gone for 2 to win the game there. That third possession would have never happened; which is why shanahan strategizing for the third possession was the wrong choice. Plus James Jones’ point about 4 downs vs 3 downs is 10000% correct for starters.

That’s exactly what I thought too….since it would be pure sudden death after thr second td, the analytics (and common sense) would dictate you go for the game right there. It was absolutely the wrong call. I honestly think Kyle shannahan lost this game for SF. You can say the muffed punt or missed PAT, but despite all that, SF still had most of thr chances to win this game because they were flat out better….but they let Kc hang around and Kyles not running CMC more up was just….he’s honestly not a good coach in the big moments. I hate to say it, I like him, but he is just not a good coach in the big moments, period.

They're also missing that Reid said had the Niners scored 7 on their opening drive, the Chiefs (wanting to avoid sudden death) would have gone for 2 if they scored a TD. Shanahan was anticipating this going at least 3 possessions. And Andy Reid was looking to win the game. That was the difference. The Niners all second half were playing to not lose. They were not aggressive on either side of the ball.

The reasoning Kyle gave makes more sense. Yk Mahomes is gonna score a td. So you bet on your offense scoring a td and Mahomes scores his now you only need to get 3 and it’s game over. But if you let Mahomes go first, he scored a td and then you score a td he gets the ball back and you lose.

If what James is saying is true, then Kyle already knew he had to go for it on fourth down because mahomes was going to go for it on fourth down. So the argument that James is making is dumb! Now, had James said, based on getting the ball second, it would have given the niners a better idea of what they needed to do to win the game, then that is a better explanation . Now, in Kyle defense, he made the right call but came up short since , had they score a TD, it would have forced mahomes to score a TD and putting the extra pressure on them to keep moving the ball ,and even when that happen, the chiefs would have realized that sudden death kicks in immediately and the niners would have a chance to win the fame since they would have received the ball In any case, james isnt the sharpest person on the panel and is probably the fifth sharpest one out of the four of them .

49ers defense was out of gas and Mahones is known to come back. The only problem was not going for it on 4th down that close to the end zone. You could have either got a TD or at least get a 1st. In OT go all or nothing.

Bingo,it sounds good in theory. But if your defense is gassed,you should give them a rest. I wouldnt just kick the ball because of this "four downs" theory. Plus i think it adds a little pressure on the team your kicking too if they know they have to score to match your score. Mahommes thrives under pressure,but alot of qbs dont. So i dont think it should be a rule that you should defer

During that drive CMC was getting good chunks of yards. Though the Oline was really the problem, because Jennings and Aiyuk were wide open and Purdy would’ve hit one of the two. It was the worst time for them to miss an assignment.

The problem with Kyle’s reasoning is that it would only work if they had scored a TD. Settling for a FG gave KC all the confidence and momentum cause they knew if they didn’t get that TD at the end they would just kick a FG for double OT. Too many things went wrong at the end, like Oline letting Jones through. Jennings and Aiyuk were wide open.

If SF had scored a TD and KC scored a TD and goes for the 2 pt conversion than it still puts pressure on KC to score. At that point it would be due or die on one play. SF made the right choice of getting the ball that puts them in the best position to win. Unfortunately they were out executed by KC. Right. But the Niners would have the benefit of knowing they have to score a TD. There's no punting, no FG, just ALL FOUR DOWNS to gain 10 yards until they score a TD. That drastically affects how to call plays to their advantage! Then on top of that, once they score the TD, then you go for two to end the game.

49ers had two legit reasons to take the ball first: - The defense just got walked down the field and needed a break. - Having Purdy go last and probably needing a TD would’ve been a lot of pressure. He was bailed out by McDuffie’s holding call that kept the initial drive going, otherwise they would’ve been punting.

You can be Mahomes and still get stopped! 49ers defense was playing great, Kyle trusted his defense would stop them on "4th down" both took gambles. They were in fact very close to stopping them on 4th and winning the game automatically without even going into a 3rd drive. Overtime dictates 1 team wins, period. Where the 9ers lost the game was when they had a kick blocked and a muffed punt return.

Five reasons to kick first in OT: 1. SF can't stop Pat. 2. SF's defense was playing well. 3. KC was going to go for two if they scored. 4. You get 4 downs. 5. Yu get to know what you need to do to catch up if the other team scores a TD or FG.

49ers had the opportunity to have the advantage of knowing what they need on the 2nd possession. Having the 4th down to play with is knowing what you need to win the game. Kyle essentially gifted Reid that advantage because he probably didnt fully understand the new rules.

The problem with Achos theory for we score, you score now it’s sudden death is that had the 49ers got a TD and the Chiefs got a TD is that Reid could’ve and said he would’ve gone for 2 and the win! Also if you kick it to the Chiefs, now you can determine what you want to do on offense and like James said you get an extra down to play with!

I love that Jennings is sitting there going, “put the defense out first, because they can stop them”, and then saying, “of course Mahomes is going to score a TD, he’s the GOAT”. You can’t argue that the defense would stop Mahomes, so defer, and then say he can’t be stopped. I actually think going first shows Kyle believed that the defense was better, and could handle the pressure of the game on the line better. He put his first year starter out there in the situation with less pressure, and trusted his defense to do it when the pressure was highest.

James Jones schooled Acho on this issue. We all can agree the OT rule wasn't exactly clear when the ref initially spoke, but as I let it wash over me, it's clear that deferring is the only answer. It's the college rule all over again. Every NCAA team defers so that they know what they need when they take the ball. Why give Mahomes and the Chiefs the opportunity to dictate how the game ends by going second? That's now three Superbowls in which Kyle Shanahan has been too smart for his own good and cost his teams on the offensive side of the football. Totally with James Jones here

JJ is right, because with the new rules, if the first team does score a td and kicks the extra point, The second team has to use all 4 downs until they score a td, and should they score a td, the second team now has the first option to play sudden death because instead of kicking the extra point, they can go for the win by going for a 2 pt conversion to end the game. So under these new rules, you should always put your defense on the field first if you win the toss.

Acho sounds silly. Mecole scoring a game-winning TD and being overwhelmed doesn't mean he does not know the rules. The 49ers players didn't know. They said it and they clearly never went over an OT scenario.

The reason the Chiefs wins because when its do or dye situation, Purdy little scare and nervous and not confidence like Patrick Mahomes then he couldnt throw a touchdown at the red zone. The last 2 position Mahomes tie the game and scored a touchdown. Thats why hes a goat. You have to play the top level to beat Patrick Mahomes. Mahomes been in the Super Bowl 3 times and Purdy this is his first time.

Let's, for argument sake, assume that it is a given that Mahomes is going to score a TD. From the 49er perspective, here are the scenarios: 1) If they defer, Mahomes scores a TD in opening possession. They need to march down the field to score a TD to tie the game. After that, the ball is back to Mahomes' hands and all he needs is to get to the field goal range. 2) If they defer, for argument sake, they are able to score a TD in their first drive, followed by a touchdown by the Chiefs. Now, they just need to score a field goal to end the game. To me, they made the right decision to get the ball first. The only mistake they made was not to score a TD in their first drive, knowing that Mahomes was gonna get the ball next.

It was literally a 1:50 second drive. It wasn’t long at all. I agree, maybe they were tired, but so were the chiefs. I like Kyle but he doesn’t coach well in the big moments. It’s just a fact.

My only thing is I agree with Kyle after him saying we want the ball the 3rd time to end the game. And I think the Defense needed a break after getting torched at the end of the 4th so that 7 Min offensive drive helped the defense recover. Only thing I dont agree with is why we kick a field goal on 4th and goal. If you're giving mahomes 4 downs might as well take 4 downs on your opening drive too so you don't disadvantage yourself by picking to recieve.
