Did the Lakers Get Played By Dan Hurley? Will the Coaching Search Reboot with JJ Redick?

A couple days after Dan Hurley turned down the Lakers, the news around the NBA is still very much centered around the fact that Dan Hurley turned down the Lakers. Everything about the story, from how it has been covered and who broke what (i.e. Woj vs. Shams) to big questions about the Lakers brand, the competence of the Lakers front office and where they turn from here -- all of it is dominating the proverbial discourse.
At least the Lakers are pushing the Celtics off the front page.
But what exactly happened, here? To get a better feel from how this whole thing played across the country, we spoke with Mark Zanetto, host of Locked On UConn. He gave his perspective on whether Hurley was genuinely interested in the Lakers job, or whether he was just playing the team to leverage a bigger deal from the University. How did this process begin? Who was contacted first? Did the Lakers come with the right offer?
Answering these questions matters, because the Lakers still have to get themselves a coach, and therefore still need to be thinking strategically about who they want and how they'll get him, even while absorbing a run of negative press, slings and arrows (some of which is delivered with a palpable sense of joy). But the Lakers have a process to finish, and not much time to get it done if they want to weave this new voice into their pre-Draft/pre-free agency prep.

If the expectations was to just coach a team, 6 year for $70 sounds good 👍 but to completely create a player development, and do Robs job of a GM where Hurley is doing in UConn, the offer isn’t enough. It didn’t convince Hurley to stop chasing a 3peat. Hurley has a better legacy in UConn.

Exactly! You agree on financial parameters and how they'd support him in hiring his staff etc.after a zoom call. Then you fly him out and within an hour you determine their level of interest. The Buss Family Trust needs to sell the team. The two older sons want to sell, but Jeanie and Janie will never agree to sell. The two younger sons work for the Lakers so it's unlikely they will vote to sell. Trust needs a 4 of the 6 to vote to sell so its not happening. We are stuck with the family business model which won't work in the modern NBA. The Buss family is destroying the legacy of Dr. Buss.

I've listened to a podcast stating those numbers as well as a few sites on some from search engines. But when I add up the win loss record of the Lakers from the basketball index, my numbers are quite different. In the last ten years, the win/loss is 353/446 In the last six years, the win/loss is 244/217

Good interview with Zanetto. He only allowed for 20% on the question of Motive. He seems to contradict himself though. He says the Lakers lowballed Hurley was the reason. He also says Hurley not ready yet in the Head to go to the NBA. Why did Coach Dan get on the plane for 70M, if it wasn't enough. I hear all the chatter. What I see is a 51-year-old man that is still in college. He loves the lifestyle and does not want to leave. Hurley is afraid of an NBA locker room. Assuming Zanetto is right, and the Lakers approached Hurley. Does that mean the Lakers do not want JJ? Looks like Cassell.

I don't consider those statements contradictory statements from Zanetto. In his opinion, Hurley wasn't ready for the NBA. But that assessment, while certainly interesting, isn't what actually matters. What matters is the Lakers' assessment, and to them, Hurley is NBA-ready. That raises the next question of what it would take to get Hurley to leave a great situation at UConn that he genuinely loves. In Zanetto's (and our) opinion, 6/$70M wasn't enough to truly put Hurley to a decision. Or to just allow the Lakers to look like they put out a truly serious offer, even if he turned it down, which is what Brian and I have been discussing. But either way, Zanetto didn't contradict himself at all. Whether or not he thinks Hurley would have been a good use of the Lakers' money, the sticker price is still the sticker price. @@jefftomasello3258 That's fine, but I could have told you 6/$70M wouldn't have been enough to pry Hurley away from a situation he loves. Was it a terrible offer? No. But it's also low enough that UConn can rebalance whatever economic scales pretty easily. It's a respectable offer, but for this to realistically work out, the Lakers needed to go over the top. If you're not willing to go over the top with Hurley, given what you're competing with, you have no business going there at all. AK

I don't think that it's about money. It's about wanting to coach younger players. And as long as LeBron is in LA, Hurley will not be our Head Coach. I like the input about the timing. Mark does not think that Hurley is ready to make the jump to the NBA. This decision is based upon: LeBron James staying in LA West Coast away from home Brooklyn has younger talented players The interview process with Hurley might have been respecting Dan's desire to wait till because of not wishing to leave UConn empty by players leaving the team through the portal.

The Lakers have to stop the coaching carousel, regardless of who gets hired. But if they're gonna bother going this far with Hurley, they needed to put out an offer much more difficult to turn down.
