I'm really sorry for your loss, good on you for speaking out about what your son went through. I'm a Irishman myself living overseas and have had a similar story except it stopped at finesteride and minoxidil 2.5mg/1mg for me. I can't imagine what all the addons must have been like, you really do feel helpless and plagued with worries that it will be permanent which makes it easy for them to hand you more and more medication then to be told your delusional is disgustingly evil. Rest in Peace.

I am so sorry this was your experience. I have worked in mental health in Scotland for 7 years. Risk and duty of care comes above all else. Whatever plan you have for an appointment is thrown out the second there is risk. Sadly a lot of staff experience burnout and compassion fagitue. There should be more support for staff along with regulation to the services. I adhere to a governing body and would lose my job for even 10% of what you explained. I hope you find some answers and peace. Edit**: I should add, whenever there is risk I go the extra mile including numerous times working in my down time to ensure the person gets the support they need. It's a responsibility we agree to when working in the field and is worth it 10x over if it saves even 1 life.

Well done Mary. I hope this podcast assists you to secure Truth, Justice & Accountability for Conall in the very near future. As demonstrated by the drama documentary exposing the Post Office Scandal the corruption of the NHS/State can, in some cases, be a platform to Justice. x

this is why electronic patient records should be present in every single nhs trust everywhere, no lying no changing notes, knowing exactly when, where, what was written and who wrote it

I worked as a mental health key worker & have nvq3 dementia training & can verify all she says about the incompetence, lack of properly trained staff & broken communication ect. How devastating & my heart goes out to her & many others who are being continually let down. It’s all about the money & not the care 😢

Thank you Mary and Bear and Scully for bringing light to this. I am currently battling the persistent mental health side effects of a result of finasteride with little to no medical help or support.

I’m sorry for your loss. I’ve also experienced nhs mental health staff covering up their lack of care and abusive comments and it’s really upsetting. They’re supposed to be there to help you in your darkest times but unfortunately for me they made things worse when I was so close to the edge. I’m grateful everyday for my friends and family, and that my episodes ended before the worst happened.

My heart breaks for Mary and family. Society really need to start educating us more on mental health, medications etc. Having ADHD myself as an adult feels heartbroken for Conal even as a young child it doesn’t seem to be understood enough, it really is a struggle everyday. Hearing the amount of tablets Conal was on is so scary it seems like nobody understood his illness. Great podcast and my love & prayer go to Mary and family ❤

Heartbreaking stuff :( What an amazing woman talking so clearly and passionately about the lack of care. Ive had to pay private to get diagnosed with adhd/autism when every social worker and mental health assesser let me down from a young age. Nobody went above and beyond ever. You could do the most extreme harm to yourself imaginable and be told to have a cup of tea and take a walk. You be put on the highest medication but never offered couselling or proper therapy. I could go on and on. Im so sorry for your loss and every loss here, it's not ok 💔🙏

Poor boy screaming out for help, he was in crisis .. he should have been assessed for his mental health .. the fact he was sleep deprived wouldnt have helped his mental state .. I feel more should have been done in light of the situation im so sorry he should have had a safey plan in place and assessed 😢❤

This is just so sad and so disappointing. As a parent, I can imagine she must feel so frustrated, powerless and helpless. Her son was utterly failed by so many people and systematic dysfunction, incompetence, deceit and she had no clue that she had no clue about so many facets. It's a huge, devastating puzzle shes had to put together backwards with the puzzle picture side down on the table and the picture is the real life experience of her child unnecessarily slipping away while the people who failed her child still get to go home to their own children everyday. 😢

I believe it was neglectful, it just doesn't make any sense to send someone home in that state, no sense at all. Just complete dismissal of the risk of the situation I cannot wrap my head around. RIP Conall, very sorry that happened to you. ❤

I've been suffering from mental health problems since a few months after starting a job in which I was heavily bullied. Since a nurse told me I was suffering from PTSD while speaking to her about a physical health problem, my GP nor the rest of the NHS have done anything for me, in fact they have caused me to get worse. I've had so many appointments with different people I can't keep track of it all, but even the people I've spoken to outside the NHS (council support and so on) are shocked at how the NHS has done nothing useful to help me. On person who used to work in Mental Health but now works in a financial charity agreed my therapist is an idiot for some of the things she has said to me that I just need to do, or what her view is on the mental health issues I have. I've decided to not use the NHS again because they have just made me worse. I'm actually very knowledgably about bullying and narcissism which has caused it all, but the therapists and GP think I am being stupid, despite there being tons of videos and many channels and websites about it all and how it can affect people.

Thank you, I have the written evidence, no different to the Nottingham killings, failures on every level, minimising risk whether that be to self or others, and the players in this are all those public bodies that purport to protect the public. 😢

Typically when there's a mental health problem unfortunately it does kick in more in the late teens. I never thought I suffered with mental health... I just thought it was typical teen moods and changing etc until I was diagnosed with bpd and bipolar at 26... then when I looked back at everything in my late teens - pulling away from friends, drinking eating issues losing interest in things I used to love. Being on top of the world and then not wanting to be near anyone at all. Just to name a few. My life from being 16 onwards made sense especially 17 onwards...

Omg what a great and lovely mother. I cannot believe that Dr was told he took 40 odd xanax and he didn't ring an ambulance straight away. Instead he tried to pawn him off on friends etc. It's unbelievable especially an od of benzos is an immediate hospital visit. Ive never heard of a good story or helpful practice from mental health teams or crisis teams.other than take a bath or make a cup of tea. The only experience is hmm ok were going to up your dose today, up until your at the highest you can go. Then your on your own.

You didn’t know how important an inquest was?? It’s an inquest into the death of your son, of which you were a prime witness. I don’t understand you saying you didn’t realize the importance of being there.

PS, my heart goes out to Connall for all the terror and lack of medical care he suffered. How could the psychiatrist ask his mother to drop him at a friends house after he had taken 72 Xanax pills, and could hardly sit in the chair beside his mother? Absolutely unbelievable and heartless! AND - Why wasn’t he given activated charcoal an the ambulance on way to hospital to have stomach pumped????

FYI, I wasn’t invited to my own sons inquest and nor was I asked to be a witness, they invited my husband, it was well orchestrated with the Coroners officer colluding and being led by the trust representatives, the part you later commented on wasn’t even included in the inquest. You can’t just rock up and demand to be a witness, I could do another whole podcast on this part alone. What I should have said is that if I’d known state witnesses lied under oath I would have gone without hesitation, instead I worked tirelessly in the months leading to the inquest to compile questions for my husband to ask and yes I stayed at home to look after my 4 school age children, you may or may not be aware we live in NI, the inquest was in England. I have a ring binder file of all my communications with the Coroners office, UK state bodies are corrupt to their very core, I know that now, I trusted them especially a Coroner, not anymore.

@marygould342 I am a mother who's child also suffered and passed away at the hands of Medical negligence here in Belfast. Watching this, whilst so hard and triggering was like watching my own story being played out by someone else. I am so very sorry for everything you, Conal and all the family have gone through. Duty of candour- doesn't exist in NI and I would love to help change that, the lies we were told and the cover up was simply shocking. Maybe we could have a chat about what we could maybe do to change things so other families Don't go through what we have. Sending you strength to see this fight through to the end in order to get justice x
