Do you know what sparked the American Revolution? Yes, It was due to taxes such as the Stamp Act, the Tea Act, and incidents such as the Boston Massacre. However, there is one piece that few know about. The proclamation of 1763. This proclamation limited the freedom of where colonists could colonize, and contributed more anger towards the monarchy. Author Patrick Spero talks about what the Proclamation of 1763 was and how it affected colonists at the time.

Had you heard of the Proclamation Line? Do you think it contributed towards sparking the revolution?

I've heard of the Emancipation Proclamation. Lol...but yeah, I think it contributed to it a little bit.

Absolutely it did. People started moving west of Appalachia soon after the war to grow and seek new opportunities. This was also the Age of Enlightenment, a time when people had the spiritual fortitude to tell a long medieval tradition that a people were endowed by their creator with the right of life, liberty and the persuit of happiness.

My understanding is there was a lot of land speculation in the Ohio Valley. The line invalidated all those claims with the implication everything would be re-negotiated. The line would have been temporary, but the adverse impact on the speculators would be permanent. If Indians were given the same rights as English, then the ability to swindle would be diminished.

The taxes were instituted to help pay for the war and for the defense and administration of the new British North American empire. The British however made it clear that the new empire was under their control, and not necessarily open to Americans. Americans rightly asked why should we pay for other parts of the empire. The British did not recognize subsidiary legislatures to Parliament and would not negotiate with them. American fears were confirmed by the Quebec act in 1774 when the Province of Canada was extended to the Ohio and not to American colonies.

it appears that the British had legitimate reasons and I can see both sides.

The british empire had ever declared that native americans should be protected the same as his own subjects. Is that true ?

Yes, it is true, but it also claims ownership of the Indigenous peoples and their lands. Just a minor detail.

Another factor is that French Canada also joined the fold. Let’s say the colonists were not happy those French loving Catholics had the same rights as them.

How did the British enforce that? Did they have soldiers posted every few feet & a fence or something?🇬🇧

British soldiers forcibly removed colonists who settled past the Proclamation Line when they found them. The settlements of the colonists who resisted were burned down by the British. The British sent 10,000 troops to enforce the proclamation and stationed forts all throughout the frontier. Then, taxes were imposed by the Parliament to pay for these troops.

They were only able to enforce it incompletely. There were simply too many colonists defying the Proclamation.
