Scotland History Tours is here for people who want to learn about Scottish history and get ideas for Scottish history tours. I try to make videos which tell you tales from Scotland's past and give you information about key dates in Scottish history and historical places to visit in Scotland. Not all videos are tales from Scotland's history, some of them are about men from Scotland's past or women from Scotland's past. Basically the people who made Scotland. From April 2020 onward I've tried to give ideas for historic days out in Scotland. Essentially these are days out in Scotland for adults who are interested in historical places to visit in Scotland.

Instantly deleted? Well, you glorified pub bore, the walls and the battles are all Picts. Scots only began to arrive here from the 5th century onwards.By the time they had their first king - in the 9th century - they barely constituted 10% of the population. WE HAVE SOD ALL TO DO WITH THE ROMANS; WE ARE, BASICALLY, IRISH. Okay?!
@NorrinRaddNorrinRadd
@NorrinRaddNorrinRadd Жыл бұрын
That title is a bald faced lie, because when the Romans were in the British isles there was no such place as scotland, because the area known now as scotland only became scotland when the Ulster tribe of Scot’s(that should’ve been scoti) invaded the far north of Britain, and created what became scotland…………. And the term Picts is a Roman term for the most northerly of the British tribes, who painted woad pictures (or possibly tattooed pictures, depending on the Roman source that you are reading, but some tattooing was used for pinpointing acupuncture points that were needed, at least five thousand years ago(which is 2.5 to 3 thousand years before the chinese supposedly invented acupuncture) which was shown to be a fact when they investigated the body of Oetzi who died five thousand years ago) all over their bodies instead of being totally covered in woad, and they were not a part of the tribe from Ulster who were the original and only Scots(scoti)…………
@NorrinRaddNorrinRadd
@NorrinRaddNorrinRadd Жыл бұрын
And the scoti invaded from the 5th C to 7th C, which is where the term scotland comes from, and the confusion is caused by the use of the term latin scholars, who are just roman catholic priests who were basically lying to cover up the reality of their invasion………….

As a former educator I LOVE the narrative timeline format. Taking events and timelines and converting them to eras lived and the true people who occupied them. This is why historical preservation is such an important endeavor for all people and places. It’s one thing to read it in a book; quite another to dig through diaries, oral histories, study archaeological research and bring the voice of the past into the present.

The best analysis of how the Caledonian tribes managed Roman aggression that I have seen. We know from the behaviour of invaders and defenders throughout history that those who flee advancing armies join with those who resist the invaders. Alliances are built and resistance strengthens. Invaders' supply lines get cut, trading ceases and occupation becomes untenable. If the Caledonian's had wanted to be Roman, north of Hadrian's Wall would have been indistinguishable from south of it. The fertile central lands of what are now East Lothian, Fife Angus and Aberdeenshire would have seen generations of Roman farms with villas, temples and baths. The old tribes said "no" to that, and with good reason. If they hadn't stood together, there would have been only one invasion and one long occupation of Caledonia. They clearly had a firm concept of "the north", held and shared by many clans, as being a single entity, when it came to defending it.

Great video Mr Fumey, I hugely enjoyed it, living within a mile of the preserved section of the Antonine wall I was surprised by how so few of my school friends knew about it. Perhaps my advantage was that an unpreserved section ran along the boundary line of my Grandfathers back garden, being curious to the purpose of this abandoned strip of land he explained the story of the wall to me and if I walked a few miles I could see the preserved section. Game on. A couple of years later a family friend took me shooting for the first time I was twelve and while walking up birds he asked if I was interested in history and knew about the local Broch, I don't know what was more fun that day, shooting the guns or walking on the rim of the remains of the at that time unvandalised Broch, thinking about it's location and the nearby Roman wall

I was born and live in Shetland. The broch of mousa is amazing I've had the privilege of working on its restoration a few years back. If you travel to the village of mossbank and walk down to the lighthouse you will find the remains of another broch upon which the lighthouse was built a number of years ago. The south end of Shetland and lerwick is bursting with well preserved ancient buildings, but as you travel north you will find that the local authority cares very little for preserving the past. It would be greatly appreciated if you made reference to this.

I lived just north of Roman Road and walked along Antonine Road on the way to school. Almost 50 years ago in P7 we joined in and took part in excavation of a Roman Fort and Bathouse across from the School. I think I found some early twentieth century broken pottery and glass. It’s was an interesting afternoon. I have been back and stood in the Old Roman Bath with my Canadian kids who had never seen anything older than about 150 years. We also visited the Antonine wall for a walk. I always just figured the Romans Came, Saw, Decided the place was to much bother and Left.

You're the history teacher we never had Bruce, to be fair, Mr. Davis, Brynn, was a good history master and would regale us with tails of daring do by Greeks, Romans, Babylonians, even the Welsh kings and I think made some mention of the Celts of the North and Ireland. He wasn't keen on the English so as part Scot I was safe, especially being from the Gales and the other side of Kernow, the Kernowek closer relations of the Cymraig. I used to be able to speak quite some Cymraig as a boy. This section of Scots history I knew some of but not enough, thanks for filling in my gaps. I really liked the quotes as the descendants of past kings, it brings it all to life. I take it by the Caigangiorans,you mean the Cairngorms and they are a long way from Glasgow. The Legion you are talking about was the 9th Hispana (origins in the name) and they were not lost in the Cairngorms.No one knows wether they were harried while not drawn up for battle by which they would have been unready when attacked. OR, - they were some myth that has quite possibly grown out of organisational irregularities in Roman admin. It is hard to beleive that a Legion of over 5500 battle hardened troops could have not at least a handfull of survivors. It is also unlikely that they were not accompanied by auxiliaries who also would have numbered in their thousands. This type of thing can be verified by visiting The Huntarian Museum in Glasgow University,who have been excavating Roman remains in Scotland for some sixty years at least.

Great video, as always! I really enjoy your videos. Being of Scottish descent, I started playing snare drum with the Cameron Highlanders Pipe Band of San Diego in 1973, until 2017. There's one detail in this particular video that I believe was not brought up though. God. King James VI of Scotland became King James I of England. A Scottish king becoming king of England? He was used by God to bring the world the most powerful and popular book the planet has ever seen, the Authorized Version of 1611, though these days it is commonly referred to as the King James Version. I believe that this is a crucial part of Scottish history. Again, great video! Keep up the good work!!

The Romans, according to the maps, advanced through the fertile farmlands right up the North East of Scotland. The Picts made use of the mountains in the highlands which the Romans seemed to have a problem with. Seems like the Picts were well organised and had a well thought out sustainable plan that the Romans couldn't figure out.

Eamonn, I came looking for your comment after your reply on mine and it was the one I had thought you would write. Back in my teenage years Michael Wood mentioned this as a possible site of the battle. There was still some debate. I had pointed out to my pal from there, I mentioned in my reply to you. He was not aware, not being a Vikings enthusiast, both of us changing from Napoleonic wargames to get games at university. He later showed me an article in the Society of Ancients magazine he signed up for. This was again debating the location, with Bromborough as one candidate of several. Has there been archeological evidence now as this was thirty five years back?

Wirral archeologists are still turning up weapons from the battle site, they even presented Bernard Cornwell with a dagger retrieved from the site ,he incorporated the dagger into his last novel about Uhtred of Bebbanburgh/ Bamburgh , Michael Wood has even had to grudgingly admit that something certainly happened on the wirral peninsula in 937 AD , it would be great to see Bruce here some fine day, keep well and safe over there...E

@@eamonnclabby7067 I reckon I went on the right course at the right university in the end, but I did get an offer to do the archeological science course at Bradford. I would have had to have lived at my parents and I wanted to go away to study. As I commented to Bruce before, I missed out on my first choice of St Andrews, not helped by being in bed with flu for a couple of weeks before the exams. In one subject the school taught the bits that always came up before, but that year they got left out. Everyone in my class got two grades less than the mocks and over half failed. It was only because my future university course tutor knew I had flu, since I missed the tour and saw him alone, that he said I could go where I did. I did still miss out on the year in the USA that I had originally applied for there though. If not for his generosity, I might have been there digging for artefacts myself. Having said that, I ended up supervising other scientists, some of whom did do the course at Bradford, which led to some interesting discussions from my having done wargames to maintain my interest in history.

I asked my Greek friend on the course for help with shield designs for wargames and she was amazed I knew about triremes when I said I used it as a design for an officer shield. She wondered how I knew Greek letters, but I pointed out that since we we both science graduates, they were common in that and all the maths you do to get to do science. Hearing about this another student introduced her boyfriend who had a company that made a BBC computer program for kids to design and print castles. I designed a a model village for them to go with it, based on similar models for wargames and built a castle with model Norman figures on a base supplied by my pal in Bromborough.

They say history is written by the victors (what they really mean is the Romans; they'll just write that they won anyway). We only know the accounts of the 'Picts' from the Romans so this was an interesting video showing the perspective of the tribes, just as if they had written a diary. (if only they had; we would have an example of the language they spoke then, a lot more insight into their way of life, and an actual account of what it was like fighting off the Romans from their perspective). Great Video!

I suspect that what motivated the Romans, time and time again, was the glory of conquest, and the resultant acclaim in Rome. But what defeated them, time and time again, was economics. Scotland was just not worth conquering and occupying. The romantic idea of subduing the "barbarian" on the frontier did not pay.
@blairrobert3438
@blairrobert3438 Жыл бұрын
Scotland is a brutal terrain to try and conquer as the later invaders found out. Once you get north of the central belt it's almost impossible to hold against guerrilla war. Plus back then all the trees hadn't been hacked down.

@@blairrobert3438 BULLS - - - They did not even commit a Legion at Mons Graupus leaving the fight to the auxiliaries while the Legions stood and watched. These 'Auxies' came from what is now modern Europe with France,Spain,and Germany and Holland being particularily well represented. There were probably a few Britons too,including Scots. One needs to learn about the ordbat of the armies of ancient Rome. If they left land unconquered,it was it was not WORTH farming. There's was an agrarian economy. Their experience in Scotland leads to similar conclusions of Scotland for some today.

@@blairrobert3438 Yes, understand and respect what you say, but obviously the Scots did hold onto the highlands in the end, whereas many invaders could not even conquer it. Against this view resident Scots populations of the time had to go to war, as well as raise their crops and shelter their families, so their options for running away and conducting guerilla warfare were time limited. What this adds up to in my mind is that defense of the highlands against invasion is not a given. This is rather similar to the position of Maori in New Zealand. They generally won most of the battles but lost the war; but that's another story. In the end, however, the English did manage to subdue the highlands, glen by glen, with their absolute brutality, and with the clearances. Without taking away from the force of the views you set out the highlands obviously were not unconquerable, or unable to be held.
