Keith brought the major party into The Who, but when he left there was a decent after party where we talked about how good the main party was. John Bonham had a focused power in his playing, but with triplet flourish’s that created extra excitement, all the while sitting on a heavy groove. Keith had constant wildness, but we saw his lovable youth really shine until he got too deep into his addictions. Sad to see both gone way to soon. Regarding the impact on a group with changing members, there often is a new era that gives new direction that is wonderful and becomes a staple to the sound. Not everyone wants to accept this but often new fans are attracted bringing fresh energy to the shows. The downside can be the Brand becomes a nostalgia act.

The Who didn’t die with Moon. They changed. It wasn’t just Moon’s death-the songwriting changed too (hard to imagine “Don’t Let Go the Coat” with Moon!). In that period they became a different kind of rock band, for better or worse.

Michael, here’s the unwritten rule among us fans. It seems that the bands that have four members or less aren’t allowed to switch out any personnel. Bands with at least five members, like the Rolling Stones can make changes to their heart’s content. And now, even with Wyman and Watts gone, the band is still going.

By 1978 Keith Moon wasn't really Keith Moon anymore. It was reported that he had a hard time getting through the Who Are You sessions,. If he had lived would he have been able to tour anymore? Either way that version of the Who may have already been gone.

Yeah, by all accounts, he ran out of steam on them throughout, and even the last show at Shepperton was supposed to have been a struggle for him to keep it together. There had also been some conversations about firing him. I'd love to hear some of the studio conversation from the "Who Are You" sessions, especially when an exasperated Keith shouted that he was still the world's best Keith Moon-type drummer. Then again, any of that stuff probably puts him and the band in a bad light, like the "Let It Be" movie did some years ago.

For me, yes. Moon was essential to what "The Who" was. And I agree with you, Michael, that while Moon was not quite the drummer that John Bonham was, the distance between them was not as far apart as what some suggested in the comments. Eminence Front is a great song after Moon died. It is a fact that some groups like AC/DC are able to replace a main member and still have big selling albums, and others like Led Zeppelin splinter off into solo and other band work. I still prefer Highway to Hell songs compared to Back in Black, even though the sales numbers are the opposite. Steely Dan was another band that had different members all the time, especially lead guitar players. Yacht Rock is another argument, to me funny but negative to others- it does help people find similar music.

Sigh. I hate to admit it.... you're probably right. I like Kenny Jones. I like the Small Faces. If you had to get a new drummer, he was as good a choice as any. I grew to like Face Dances but I could never get into It's Hard. As for the last two albums? Forget it. I never saw the boys with Keith. The 2 concerts I attended were 1989 and 2015. One with Entwistle one without. Both were great experiences... but... not the same as seeing them at their peak in the mid 70s. Fun fact about those 2 concerts. Both were in the exact same venue in Vancouver... separated by 26 years!

Quick answer YES! Like Led Zeppelin with Bonham's death, when Moon died The Who died too. BUT! Unlike Zeppelin The Who carried on first with Kenny Jones behind the drum kit, I saw this reconfigured The Who and they were real good, but not Great without Moon. Then came Zack Starkey, Ringo's son with great pedigree indeed, and with all due respect to Kenny Jones much better drummer but still no cigar. There's a reason Led Zeppelin disbanded after Bonzo died except for those few concerts Live Aid, Atlantic Records 40th and the 02 Ahmet Ertegun concerts(not withstanding Page & Plant, great Yes but Not Zeppelin) Bonham vs Moon? Apples & Oranges?? I still have to pick Bonham over Moon, he really changed the role of a rock drummer and doing it on a single simple drum kit. Moon & Baker were were forerunners in Rock Music with the double - bass kits with Moon being the more explosive and animated drummer. But this brings us back to my quick answer about The Who after Moon's death, YES! Jones and Starkey really good drums with Zack edging Kenny but the other three I mention Bonham, Moon and Baker are on a different plateau, especially Bonham. R.I.P. 🥁🥁🥁🙏🙏🙏

I think a band that can continue even though they get different members is AC/DC! They've had three different bass players and 4 different drummers, and of course transitioning from Bon to Brian! Unfortunately, losing Malcolm was EXTREMELY detrimental to the group, even if they kept the same sound... I do like Stevie and I absolutely love Power Up and their tribute to Malcolm!

Great discussion. So, bands that would cease to be the same band if they lost just one member, effectively bands that are more than the sum of their parts. For me you’ve got the Beatles, Led Zeppelin, the Doors, the Who. Other bands might be acceptable as long as certain key members remain in place eg Jagger and Richards from the Stones. I agree with you that the Who without Moon are not the Who. Similarly, Queen without Mercury are not Queen. Pink Floyd without Waters are not Pink Floyd. Gilmour is one of my favourite guitarists and a distinctive part of the post-Barrett Floyd sound but the Waters solo Amused to Death album with Jeff Beck sounds just like classic Pink Floyd and is far superior to the likes of the Division Bell. Bonham, Moon and Starr are my favourite drummers.

Michael I love your enthusiasm for Entwistle. IMO, he was a better bass player than Moon was a drummer. No disrespect to Keith because he makes my top 5 drummers list as well..... But John Entwistle was an insanely talented and gifted musician. People don't realize how much John's voice was a HUGE part of their sound. Pete would eventually sing more lead than John but John's harmonies and backing voc are all over their records and live shows from the beginning through 74 or so. Not to mention he arranged all the horn parts on Tommy, Quadraphenia etc and played ALL of it himself. He was the entire brass section. His solo albums are also superb at times....just stay away from the one called Mad Dog...... The Ox was/still is my hero and biggest influence on me as a bass player and all around musician. He's bound to be destroying ear drums in another world as I type this. Anyway, thanks for the love for him. Great conversation.

Keith was never technically proficient. He was almost amazing by accident. I do feel that after ‘73 his talent started fizzling because he was more into being “Keith Moon” and the rockstar lifestyle as opposed to respecting the craft. And sure enough he was dead by ‘78. Yes it’s true, Bonham blew him away talent-wise. There’s a video somewhere on KZbin of a Keith Moon drum solo on some kids show in the 70s and it’s dreadful! It’s like watching a 10-year-old kid wailing away in his bedroom on his first kit

I think if you combine the best tracks from The Who's "Face Dances" and "It's Hard" albums, you'd have a pretty good Who album. But, the drumming wouldn't be as good. I think 2019's "WHO" album is a great later-day studio effort by the group. It's not as good as the Keith Moon Who albums, but I like that one a lot.

They weren't The Who by then. Zak Starkey is a terrific drummer and Pino Paladino likewise great on bass but really - Townshend & Daltrey?

The Kinks survived the loss of Peter Quaife, but of course, there was still plenty of ink left in Ray's pen and he and the band did manage to bend like a tree in the wind as times changed. It's ironic to me that "The Who" are out there in the form of the guy who wrote "I hope I die before I get old" and the guy who sang it, but just as Paul and Ringo aren't going out as "The Beatles", Roger and Pete aren't "The Who" for me. I differ a little from Michael in that I thought The Who put out some amazing live shows with Ken Jones -- I'll take his live interpretation of "Sister Disco" over Keith's robotic version any day of the week -- but how did we go from that "How Can You Do It Alone" jam (captured on the 1997 reissue of "Face Dances") to that lounge singer version on the album? Pete knew that the "music must change" 'round the time of "Who Are You", but remember that Keith was in such poor condition that there had been talk of firing him. OK, the music changed, and ... we didn't like it. For my money, The Who were done after Live Aid. Once it turned into filling the stage with a lot of people (even if one of them was Simon Phillips, who would have been great as a member) to perform "Tommy", something Pete tried to replace onstage multiple times and failed, I was done. There are always going to be folks who saw them with John and Zak or as they are today and they'll say they enjoyed the show, etc. That's no problem for me, but that just doesn't get me going now. I know Roger was pretty defensive early on about the "new" group, but he ultimately gave way to saying that he thought Jones was the wrong drummer for the band. I've never seen him address whom he thought would have been the right guy for the gig, though. On the other hand, trying to get straight talk from Pete Townshend is like shaking one of those magic 8 balls where you get different answers every time. He said some awful things about Keith and John over the years that I'm sure he didn't mean, but a great songwriter such as he seemed to struggle in conveying that he wanted something a little more conventional in his rhythm section. Aside: Imagine a drunken Pete, preaching from his chair with Steve Jones and Paul Cook sitting with him, and he asks them to join The Who. How would *that* have sounded?

Moon epitomized the anarchy and raw energy of the Who. They did good stuff after Keith died but they were never the same. In essence, the Who did die after Moon's passing.

In a simple summary a comment said, “The Who didn’t die, but their spirit did” but to further add detail. Townshend during this period was heavily involved in his alcoholism and drug dependency ( considering it got worst after Moon’s death, while taking to account that the song “eminence front” is about superstars dependency on drugs ). Like wise creative differences emerging as Townshend once stated he wanted The Who to go on a similar route the Beatles did during their late 66-69 period where their just worked on music and retire temporarily from touring. Daltrey and Entwhistle refused to collaborate with this new vision of The Who. Essentially the band releasing their final album “It’s Hard” and ( in big parentheses ) showcasing their “Final Tour”. Without a doubt The Who and Zeppelin are in my top 5 easily, but The Who edges zeppelin slightly 🤘🏻🎯

After "Who Are You", the band known as The Who stopped being, the whole sound and dynamic changed without Moon. I loved Kenny Jones as the drummer for The Faces, but he could not replace Keith Moon, he was literally one-of-a-kind, same with Bonham. For the most part, Face Dances and It's Hard are forgettable Who albums. The Who was basically a trio, and when one instrument, perhaps the most significant and distinctive one, disappears, THAT particular band ceases to exist. I'm sure Robert Plant recognized this as well when Bonham died. Drummers like Moon, Bonham, Ringo, Stewart Copeland- they have such a distinctive and unique sound signature, they are impossible to replace.

no it didn't since Face Dances was far superior to WAY album... and they played fantqstic shows during 1979-1982, specially 1980/1981 tour people loved those tours/shows, it's just that certain "gatekeeper" Who fans try desperaltely rewrite history claiming that they weren great and people didn't like them at all during this period.. it's hilarious

Disclaimer: there are a multitude of jazz drummers who could smoke any rock drummer. But, for rock: 1) Ginger Baker (*even though he considered himself a jazz drummer exclusively) 2) John Bonham 3) Keith Moon 4) Bill Bruford (also a jazz drummer) 5) Cozy Powell Honorable mention: Ian Paice, Bill Ward, Mitch Mitchell

Dire Straits dropped down a level when Pick Withers left. The replacement drummer was excellent, but couldn’t swing. As an Aussie, the same happened when Richard Ploog left The Church. Ploog added some swing. Drummers add to the magic of a great band. Did you mention Carmine Appice in your list of drummers?

Yes. Kenny Jones was good but they definitely dropped a level. They had achieved everything by then anyway. Tommy Who’s Next Quad cements them in the upper echelons forever. They rang the bells several times. Class A Rock Band.

The Who didn’t die when the iconic Keith Moon unfortunately passed away. Kenney Jones was a great drummer. Yes not as erratic as Moon and with more of a straight ahead , basic style. But I always felt that he did a great job in the band. And his era gave us one of The Who’s best songs, Eminence Front. And as far as the other drummers mentioned, they would ALL be in my top 10 for sure. But number one for me has always been Carl Palmer!!

.. to my ears Entwhistle and Moon lacked the chemistry and feel so beautifully demonstrated by John Paul Jones and Bonham, plus Moon often tended to plough his own furrow, rarely echoing Townsend. Whereas Pge and Bonzo were often weaving around each other's playing. As to your main question guys, I'd say the Who, as musical tour de force, ended after Who's Next.
