Exactly! The punishment is supposed to be separation from society, not separation from your fundamental human rights, being "guarded" by people who have been separated from their morals and humanity. We can't even pretend that rehabilitation is possible in a prison setting if the very system that is supposed to help people instead ensures that inmates leave *more* traumatised and *less* able to function in society than before their sentence began, due to the horrors inflicted upon them. That is the total opposite of rehabilitation and we can not and should not support such flagrant breaches of trust and power.

I personally feel that addicts should get sentenced to long term rehab and not prison. Someone with a known mental illness that is unable to get their medication for some reason or another needs to get to a hospital, not a prison. There is no reason to be put in prison for self defense, especially when there's proof that they were defending themselves. I have said for years that prisons should be for extremely violent people. What support structure do you support for people that are addicted and can’t afford treatment? Before saying you shouldn’t break the law put yourself in that person’s shoes. I recognize prison should not be nice but you still have basic human rights. I wish more prisons would say your job is to make sure the prisoners serve out their sentence safely and humanely. So many prisoners work for free and it’s an incredibly lucrative financial system. Especially with many prisons are now for-profit private industries where they feed people bricks of food that cost a penny per serving and have very little nutritional value. Places like India have prisons where you can leave and take care of your kids during the day and just sleep there at night… As long as you live close enough to the prison and you have a bright colored band locked on your wrist so they know who you are. As soon as you come to the prison at night they take the bracelet off and put it on the next warning when you leave That way these people can be with their families as long as they didn’t commit a violent crime. All these other places can find solutions and yet here we are putting people in solitary confinement despite knowing it causes permanent psychiatric damage

Oh Jess, this tugged at my heartstrings. I cannot imagine what you went through. You are phenomenal and an inspiration to so many. You speaking out, raising awareness and your advocacy is so amazing and i admire you so much for what you went through. I’m doing a double bachelor of psychological science and criminology, it’s my passion and has been for so long. I’m only 1st year and still have 6 years to go. But people like you are who have inspired me to do what i do. I also want to say i really really really admire that you didn’t downplay or invalidate men’s experiences bc i know a lot of women who will happily do that and the reality is everyone struggles and everyone’s struggles are valid. So i really admire that about you. Keep being you and doing what you do, you are so incredible. Sending love from Sydney, Australia. So proud of you and the person that you are. ❤️❤️❤️

For once, Dr. Phil did good. That beautiful politician deserves 👏 ❤ for being HONEST and also seems to be working towards fixing the issues! I'll be watching her more closely! The mom who got 20 yrs inside because her health kicked off a addiction, my heart breaks for. The doctors these days NEED to be held accountable for giving us meds w.o giving us an idea of what could happen. Try other non addictive meds and even combine pharmacy meds with natural meds to find a balance. Make changes when a person seems to be needing more or stronger meds, starting with a look inside of the body again and see if things have changed. Look at alternatives for pain relief. Or change to a med that has a different chemical make up so that the body can have time to let go of its dependence on the ones its built a tolerance to. And Jess, I know that look... the flashbacks of trauma and pain as you watched this. I also saw that "Finally someone gets it!! Finally someone who is high enough up the food chain who can hopefully make changes a reality!" I saw your hope, Jess! Hold on to that & keep fighting babygirl! And know that you have an old grandma in Georgia who has your back & is sending you strength and love and prayers!!

I was a correctional officer and female inmates are treated with disgust by officers. Some officers are predators, sadist, and bullies. Correctional officers do abuse their power just because they believe that they can and this is the only place that they can exude some form of power because they are really weak and pathetic outside the walls of the prison. Please call your Senators and Congressperson to pass the federal law and start to inform your state governments about prison reform. The realization is that anyone can make a mistake and end up in a correctional facility. Imagine if you, your spouse, or your children make a mistake that would place them in prison, would you want them being abused, assaulted, or raped by the people who are sworn to protect them?

Laws that nobody knows about aren't effective. Lawyers are fond of saying "Ignorance of the law is no excuse", but this amounts to "You have to have memorized all laws, state and federal, by your 18th birthday." Crimes like the ones these women committed (opioid addiction and some stuff related to it) aren't being discouraged by harsh laws like losing parental rights after a year. They didn't say anything about their knowledge or ignorance of the law, but I'd bet a dollar they didn't know about how the court handles custody before their trial.

It actually blows my mind that this inhumane kind of treatment is suffered daily by women and their newborn children at the hands of a corrupt correctional system. I have learned so much from your videos surrounding this issue and it’s so impactful that you continue to share your experiences with others. I hate to say the same thing happens in mental institutions. I was in there with a pregnant woman having a psychotic break. She was too afraid to tell them, and they don't always test. But she was restrained and when you're involuntary committed, you have to take the medications they want to give you, or you get them in a shot. We know that a bunch of psychiatric drugs cause birth defects. She was already 5 months along before she started showing, and started to get any prenatal care. In a damn county hospital long term psych ward. I just hope baby and mama ended up healthy and okay. When you are under legal commitment, you are also not allowed to say no to anything. They are not places of healing, unfortunately. Edit: Felons need to be able to VOTE! What's the worst that could happen? We get some kind of prison reforms? I dread that we are heading into summer in Texas, knowing Texas prisons do not have air conditioning. It's not a "luxury" it is a necessity in 100°F+ weather. It's not like they can open a window for a breeze. Prisoners will be dying of heat stroke, people who didn't do a crime that deserves a death sentence.
