In Belgium, Germany, the Netherlands, Sweden, Austria & a few other countries don't charge prisoners for escaping as long as they don't break any other laws. The claim is that it is human nature to want to escape, which is true.

My uncle escaped from San Quentin in 1986. He wasn’t arrested for, I believe, 7 years. He was ultimately shot and killed in 1994 by a prison guard. I was just a kid at the time, but I believe his killing had a lot to do with his escape. Love your content, Jes!

Mark Adams? (I googled) but that’s a crazy story. But for it to start at 16 and not get punished until he was 22 seems so wrong. Maybe I’m wrong but it just seemed more sad than if you hear of an adult doing the same thing. I guess it had to do with the police ties. Sad to hear.

Crazy story! A guy in Greeneville, TN recently escaped from jail...stole a worker's uniform grabbed a box & walked right out the front door. They caught him in a barn after he stole a car & crashed it. CRAZIER still is that this guy had originally been arrested not long before that for shooting at police & fleeing the scene on foot. As I'm driving down the road he comes out of the trees on the side of the road & walks RIGHT IN FRONT OF MY CAR! I swerve around him, stop & look behind me to make sure he's okay (at the time not knowing he was on the run or who he was), he starts walking toward the rear of my vehicle & I sped away. Found out a few hours later he was caught & what he had done! I may have literally dodged a bullet!

Can an inmate escape from a modern facility? Yes, but staying gone is a real problem. Having help from the outside could really help, but if they put a price on your head motivates the person who "helped" you to make several thousand dollars worth of problems disappear by turning you in.

Jess, have you done a video commenting on the show 60 Days In? It's about jails that send informants into the jail as inmates for 60 days to find out what really happens inside their jails. They try to find out staff problems, problems with the way inmates are treated, and how contraband (mainly drugs) gets into the jail. It's on Netflix, at least (that is how I saw it). After watching your channel for a year or so, I've become sensitive to how bad jails are and this show reinforces that feeling. I really like the show because the Sheriffs that are responsible for the jails seem to making a genuine effort to improve their jails. I think its a step in the right direction at least.

Yeah, I'm in the US, and I just learned that in Norway (which has some of the most humane prisons in the world) you aren't punished for escaping because the need to escape confinement is a basic part of human nature. Free US citizens don't even have healthcare, so it makes sense that the prisons are like torture chambers. If we want to get people to support prison reform, we're going to have to improve the conditions of free citizens as well.

So horrible and it’s terrifying not just for the person going through it but everyone around them. The only reason I was finally given help was due to a nurse finding my condition on her meds run… she was shook and immediately started yelling at the cop for leaving me in the conditions they were leaving me in. One time while I was in jail in California a woman had just rolled in and all of a sudden she started profusely hemorrhaging blood. She couldn’t really talk and it seemed like she could barely keep from passing out so we couldn’t really tell why it was happening but it seemed like a really bad/dangerous miscarriage or some kind of internal bleeding problem or something. It was absolutely traumatizing and it wasn’t even that guards weren’t doing walkthroughs or checking on the unit, because they had done multiple walkthroughs and all of us would be freaking out and telling the deputies what was happening (even though they could see it happening either way) and they literally just pretended like they couldn’t hear us or see her at all. The woman wasn’t taken out to medical FOR HOURS until she was literally out cold and there was a pool of blood on the floor. Then, once they took her, we asked them if we could use the cleaning supplies to clean up because this was literally a biohazard situation and they refused to give us anything because we are only supposed to get the cleaning stuff in the morning. We were literally using wet and dry pads to wipe up this person’s blood and couldn’t actually sanitize or clean it how appropriately until the next morning.

For context, I live in Manitoba Canada, and here jail and prison are the same thing, remand is what we call jail. In my town there is a juvenile prison in town, right beside the hospital and 1 of the Nursing homes. It's hard to explain without showing you a map. Anyways I used to work at the nursing home as a CNA, one evening shift we got a call from the RCMP telling us "No smoke breaks, we had 3 inmates escape, stay inside until we call you unless it is an emergency" so we stayed inside with all the doors locked. About an hour later I pick up the phone "[Nursing Home] Nursing desk" and the cop on the other line said "Hi this is Constable [Name]" and my first instinct as a CNA was to say "Do you need me to get a nurse?" and she said "No, it's okay. Just wanted to let you know you guys can have your smokes now, we caught the last escapee" I don't smoke, but I went and told everyone they could now smoke and I was the hero LOL

Something that I find interesting is that the escape itself will lead to extra charges If I remember correctly, here in Germany the escape itself isn't going to lead to extra charges for the escapee, since the desire for freedom isn't considered something to be punished They're still gonna chase you of course and you're probably gonna get caught but you won't be punished for escaping Of course, if you broke other laws during your escape, like steal a car or hurt someone, that's going to be added to you charges

🦝🦝🦝 Jess, good video. I hate the fact that females are treated differently than the males. Luckily I work for a good department that is pushing to change all of this. If you are ever in Maine, hit me up and I will get you a tour to see what we are about.

I’ve never been in jail/prison, but I’ve joked about escaping from a psychiatric hospital I was at, and they didn’t take it well.

I read this about 30 years ago - it happened somewhere up in New England; I think. Some geniuses broke out of the county clink. One criminal mastermind who wasn't in the original plan followed them out. Brainiac was three days away from being released from a 90-day stint. But the intellectual superstar just had to run with the others. Whatever state it was had a mandatory ten years in the state pen for escape. So, he went away for another ten years. Now that's funny!

Actually, Jess, I never thought about escaping. My first time was for a year in jail, and I also did a 45 day stint, and the last time was for six months.

My ex just transferred to a state facility but while he was here in county, was kept in this makeshift trailer (they call it a trailer) while a new jail is being built. Staff shortages are no secret, the sheriff whines about it constantly during press releases. But somehow there still haven't been any escapes. Which tells me either a) all of these inmates, around 1K at any given time, have more common sense. Or b) even with a lack of guards, they're utilizing them as best they can. My money's on B. Work smarter, not harder.

I lived near the Philadelphia prison and I woke up one day to my house surrounded by swat and police and helicopters.. a inmate escaped and was hiding out in my shed. Worst shed to pick... it was like a sun room shed... half the walls and ceiling was glass. . .

Omg! I'm a former addict and have been in a few jails im my time and everything you said is exactly and I mean exactly what happens! I've found plastic in my food I've found cockroaches personally in my food and you're right if one inmate does something wrong every inmate is punished for it. These jails are disgusti6ng and I don't know how they get away with it!? Thanks for all of you videos. It brings back memories and great reminders to stay clean cuz it will end in jails institutions or death! Oh my lol. From pittsburgh!

Many European countries recognize the urge to escape confinement to be a natural human survival instinct and the escapee is not charged for that specifically if they didn't commit any additional crimes. Exceptions in cases of, eg, violent offenders obv.

Sebastian County is awful! It needs revamped from the ground up. A few months before this they had several inmates overdose on fentanyl. Watching your video, it is definitely a safety issue, nothing has changed. Medical attention is never taken seriously, if you do get answered after how ever many hours they then charge you a minimum of $50 for it. I've heard more than a couple of people that someone had a medical emergency and actually had obviously passed, however they were not pronounced dead until they had been transported to a hospital so that it wouldn't be reported as a death at the facility. Crawford county got a huge nice new jail, it's being ran just as awful as the old jail was. Sebastian county used to be very notorious for "accidentally" releasing the wrong inmates A LOT! You are freaking awesome! Prison/Jail reform needs to happen across the board, from small time city jails to FBOP. What you are doing to help bring attention to these issues is so awesome. Keep up the good work!
