This really isn't the historical title we are looking for. We want the old tactical interactions back, a world map to play on with a good variety of factions and playstyles, and logistic features. Pharoah slapped on a bunch of cities, but it's the most simplistic of all the historical titles. Don't let God rays fool you, there is actually far less to this game than Rome 2 or Empire total war. Hell even Thrones of Britannia is more interesting from a tactical and logistical perspective.
@lp45143 ай бұрын
I would say it has a good variety of factions and cultures after the update (like Egyptian. Hittite, Babylonian, Assyrian, Elamite, Mycenaean/Greek, Thracian, Cimmerian, Canaanite, Nubian, Libu, Urartian, Sardinian/Italian) and definitely is more complex than Rome 2, are you sure you remember vanilla Rome 2 and not some mod like DEI that adds a ton of complexity that vanilla Rome 2 didn't have? I'm not saying Pharaoh is perfect and there will be some mods that make cities/buildings and trade more complex and add things like a population system, kind of like DEI, which will make Pharaoh much better, but even now it's not the most simplistic tw title.
@thomaslacornette12823 ай бұрын
If some old peoples remenber "conquest of the new world" it was a awesome conquer/colonization game: battles were like some kind of checkboard but were still cool for the 90s. There was a lot of building cites and ressources logistics, this type of game combined with total war batles would be awesome. CA have to renew the genre badly. A little bit like M&B should have integrate Crusader kinds gameplay outside of battles. CA assembly could also have create their own M&B lol... This company make the same game since they born...

This just goes to show that the Warhammer fanbase has totally taken over total war. Nobody wants "faction mechanics". The idea that Prussia doesn't play different than Britain in an empire is a joke. The idea that not having faction mechanics hurt the game is a joke. The idea that the empire is somehow even more accurate historically than anything in the old school games is a straight up middle finger to the old fanbase. Pharaoh didn't succeed because it made old total war fans happy. It succeeded because Warhammer fans are braindead consumers.

The "unique mechanics" (ancient legacies) in Pharaoh sound good on paper, but are nothing more than flavour mini games adding nothing to the main loop. You can go along a full campaign without touching the "Ancient Legacies" systems (or the court for that matter). We need CA to step in and design a game around a few core mechanics with meaningful and stategic decisions (which punish the player for making a bad decision in some cases). Being it in the form of "unique mechanics per faction" or a few core mechanics for all factions, they should add something to the core game loop. Kudos to Andy for finding a girl who plays strategy games lol

Congrats to Andy's wife for the effort! There is only 1 thing that I still hate in Dynasties, and miss in the old game. Starting with more than 1 region. This would allow you a lot of flexibility in terms of management and expansion. In Warhammer & Shogun it made sense for everyone to start with only 1 region, but not in every other Total War game. I miss playing as an actual country or state rather than 1 single town. If in Dynasties the major factions & rulers would start with say 2 full regions, they would truly feel Major both when playing with and against them.
@lp45143 ай бұрын
Only a few factions start with literally just one region/town, most start with 2 or 3 and there are also some that have more. With Assyria (the minor faction) you start with 6 regions, with Merneptah you start with 5 and Amenmesse and Agamemnon have 4 regions. Also there isn't really a difference between major and minor factions in terms of size or power, like Assyria and Merneptah (the current Pharaoh, so he's the main Egypt at the start of the campaign) are minor factions while Ramses who basically historically was still a nobody at the beginning of the campaign (which is why it makes sense for someone like him to only control a few towns) without any power is a major faction.
@catalinmarius39853 ай бұрын
@@lp4514 There is a huge gap between the 2-3 starting towns in Dynasties and the number of starting towns in older Total War that I was talking about, where you actually felt like you ruled a country. That's the issue, there should really be a difference between major and minor factions in terms of size or power, that's why they are called minor and major.
@lp45143 ай бұрын
@@catalinmarius3985 All the factions I played in older Total Wars also had only 2-4 regions, like House of Julii/Scipii in Rome 1 had 2 regions, Romans in Rome 2 had 4 regions, England in Medieval 2 had 3 regions, England in Empire had 3 regions. The only exception was Eastern/Western Rome in Attila. I guess you were always playing the ones that start with more, but I'm pretty sure most factions in older total wars also started with just 2-4 regions. Personally I prefer that, to start small and get a big country over time (and often it just takes 15-20 turns to conquer 10+ settlements anyway, so doesn't take that long until you play as a big country). And as I said the terms "major" and "minor" factions have nothing to do with the size and power of a faction neither in the game nor historically, the developers explained that this is only about how much features a faction has (major factions have a unique faction leader with character art, some unique buildings, more unique units etc. and minor factions don't have those things).

Too many lies, too many broken promises, and the best they've managed here is to "fix" something by bringing it up to a level that's only slightly worse than what they've done before. I fail to see a great game here. CA haven't gotten any of my money for a while and I'm still not convinced to part with it. I'll judge the next game and call this just another write-off. They can add another 1000 regions and faction mechanics, it won't change a thing regarding the main problem of the latest games: Battles. CA does not realize that if I want to play campaign only, I will play Paradox games. Their focus should be on the battles: More realism, more physics simulation and less +1 buffs aka spreadsheeting. There haven't been any meaningful improvements how mele engagements work with warscape, we are stuck since Rome 2. The fact that Medieval 2 was the last game where formations like testudo actually worked is painful. Cavalry units clashing with other cavalry units still looks horrendous. So no, TW is far from saved.
@DGPStudios3 ай бұрын
See an very old comment from me, see how nothing has been adressed: "I appreciate the effort, but for me Rome 2 marks the beginning of where CA forgot why we play their games. Units are not floaty because of short battles! I suggest watching the Rome 2 review from Reynold Sanity. They should honestly just scrap the entire warscape engine. It does well on ranged combat, but that's about it. Better armor is not reflected in different materials and weapons behaving different towards it, but because of +2 piercing armor. The units don't feel lifelike at all, they move in perfect unision, clip though eachother, search their targets like drones and when killed die with the same death animation. Units end up in giant blobs since Rome 2 as every unit tries to attack into the center of an enemy unit... I want a battle SIMULATION, no spreadsheet calculator! There is a lot of matched combat, but that just means that second rows in a formation will do nothing. If they do the entity stops mid-animation and dies by the only non-matched animation in the game. To this day they have not fixed the moments between matched combat animations, meaning units will stupidly stare at each other and awkwardly move into position for the next animation. Absolutely zero dynamics here. Compare that to Medieval 2! Battle lines do not move and still look inferior to Rome 1 heavy units simply pushing through peasants. New physics based engine, more lifelike animations, ragdolls, collsion, mass, formation combat, etc. Why is Total War rendering so many units only to handle them like Age Of Empires units? That one poor roman soldier does not have 75hp but 1 life and if he gets stabbed at the right angle he dies immediately. I think Totally Accurate Battle Simulator does a better job at Battle Simulation than Total War currently..."
@williamcase34943 ай бұрын

@DGPStudios3 ай бұрын
@@byshopwilliams8256 Not their goal? Older Total Wars always tried to sell the immersion of being a battlefield commander to the players. That is why CA worked on this aspect until rome 2. Units would react when getting hit by bullets in empire, show exaustion in shogun or have conversations in rome 2. Rome 1 would be used for documentations and game shows who wanted to immerse you in being a historical commander as well. TW has not improved since, units are still opening randomly their mouth as if they are chewing gum.
