both are sad replicas of the original. I mean that with no disrespect but i've been here since the original Shogun and everything TW by CA/SEGA was cutting edge, yes it had bugs and kinks but now its just sad and weird. I wouldn't even mind if the devs made games they wanted or what fans wanted but they are just in it for the money and i stepped away, keeping my beloved games

Totally bug ridden game. If you enjoy spending ages setting up your army only to see your cannons refuse to fire, or defending your city only to see the controls disappear from the screen mid battle, then this is the game for you. I love this original game and the other Empire titles, but I’ve had to restart the game so many times as the controls disappear or my superior battle winning cannons just sit there doing nothing.

There’s a couple of things missed here (all from MTW). “Valour” as a somewhat hidden unit statistic which contributed to unit performance and lethality. Separate “hold ground” and “hold formation” buttons which from RTW onwards, were just merged into the “guard mode” button. Lastly “rank bonuses” for infantry units, which incentivised the use of depth in formation, often to resist cavalry charges, or so to maintain a coherent battle line with spearmen. I was going to mention elevation improving the range of middle units, but it’s already been mentioned. Same for units being able to be moved without generals, or being fixed into dedicated armies.

Sins of a Solar Empire 2 is a true improvement in all aspects compared to the previous one, unlike Total War titles with each new release being one step forward, two steps backwards in most regards. Also the Sins devs release ever improving modding tools compared to CA which dumb down or even cripple modding tools so modders have to reverse engineer their own tools. Those "devs" are truly evil or at least a clear representation of everything wrong with most modern gaming companies

While it's not yet dethroned Stellaris, per se, it has made it's predecessor, SOASE Rebellion, completely irrelevant. All it did was enhance the base and make a phenomenal engine for it. Of course, Rebellion will still have the mods, but once 2 catches up, you'd be hard pressed to see more than 100 people playing Rebellion.

I played the original Knights of Honor to death, I’ve also played a lot of Total War games, AOE and several other real time strategy and turn based strategy games. One of the things I loved about Knights of Honor, is the armies and units like spies, merchants and assassins all move in real time. So you have to actually plan the movements of the units, in relation to what your adversaries are doing. That makes everything feel more realistic than turn based games like Total War. Bc you have to make decisions quickly, to be successful and you have to live with and adapt to any mistakes you make in real time. Which is both better and worse for your empire than turn based games, but more realistic in both aspects. Bc you don’t have to wait, until the turn goes round to your next turn, to change your plans. You can adapt to mistakes and alter your plans, if you get some new information and want to change an army’s objective for example. And being forced to make decisions quicker, means inevitably that you’ll make more mistakes and have to adapt to them, as in reality. Where’s in turn based games, you can linger more on decision making, to make better decisions. But you can’t adapt to any mistakes quickly and often before it’s too late, to be able to doing anything about them. I haven’t played KOH2 yet, but I can tell that it has the same great look and feel to it and has improved the battle controls and the number of kingdoms, but not by enough imo. More has gone into improving the superficial graphics and aspects of the game than improving the world boundaries and the original game’s limitations. There’s no New World exploration, making contact with distant Civilisations, far away in Asia or Africa. And there’s only 9 available slots for all the court members and leaders of the Empire, which is ridiculous. If anything, it’s too much like the original KOH in these two important ways. But everything else is like the great aspects of the original. You would think though, after 30 something years since the original, they would’ve been able to make grander scale improvements, than just visual superficial aspects that were already very good in the original. Some very minor things in the original, were simplistic and a bit clunky, for want of a better word. But they all functioned brilliantly enough, for what they needed to do. For example, the battle window, when you’re on the strategic map screen and not actually in the battles. The quality of the waves on the sea and terrain quality as well. Yes everything has a new shinier glossy look, but all the exact fundamentals and limitations are basically the same, except with about 10% bigger strategy map size. That’s good that all the fundamental aspects are the same, as they’re all superb in the original. But after 30+ years, a 10% bigger map and better graphics is the best they can do? I suppose it introduces KOH to new generations and makes it possible that they could make expansions and more sequels. That’s about the best thing that I can say about it, personally as an original gamer, I’m not bothered about trying this out. Bc I already know too well how I’ll experience it, just from watching a short review video like this. It will basically feel exactly like the original, only with more minutia depth, like the royal library and more superficial things that don’t affect the gameplay much. Neither of those is enough to get me excited to want to invest many hours playing it. The ironic thing is that I can’t see many people who haven’t played the original, being drawn to this game, bc there’s so much more entertainment competition now. Lastly, the battle gameplay and graphics improvements are unnecessary. As so much attention is needed, to play the strategic map that fighting every individual battle, is a pointless waste of time. That’s just show piecing and window dressing the game, to draw in new players. But after about 5 hours playing, they’ll soon realise that while they were controlling an army fighting a battle, stuff was happening on the strategic map that they were oblivious to, the battle was just day dreaming and allowing things to go awry, and possibly disastrous to the kingdom. Or they became distracted or didn’t notice something important that the kingdom needed. Personally, I would’ve done away with the battles altogether and spent that wasted aspect of the game engine, on a global map of the whole world. A massive set of window panels, for as many court members, as you could ever want, instead of only a pathetic 9. An expanded kingdom advantages menu/system and trading resources between kingdoms. That would be a means, of improving relationships between kingdoms. Also they didn’t change the chaotic crusading armies that causes more harm to your own kingdom than to the one the crusade is launched against. I did actually like the chaotic aspects of things like that in the original, in a weird way. Bc that does add some realism to the game, as is true to history. It just needs tweaking a bit though as was pointed out in this video. The upgrades to the generals and court members, was difficult to understand in the original as well. But is straightforward enough, when you get used to it. I can’t say what it’s like in this game though, bc I’d need to play it to be able to tell. It did add something a bit mysterious to the original, as with the kingdom advantages. That’s what kept me playing it so much, bc it seems there’s always something more to learn, and ways of improving and overcoming the adversities of the game. But it would be nice for all that to be a bit clearer to start with. So as to make the game, actually winnable on the first try and not waste a lot of time failing, just bc of not understanding the game dynamics. Playing against other humans, would make it more difficult and interesting, to make up for that. The tutorial or help /pop up windows, should be on a par with all the other strategy games. I did really love the court members upgraded system though, so I’m not saying they should’ve dispensed with that, it really enhances the game, adding another crucial dimension to it that has to have careful consideration. Many thanks and if you even read all this congratulations!

I'll never forget the first time I saw the water in AOE3 back in 2005, it was unbelievable at the time 😅 they really went all out on the graphics and innovations, not always successfully and a lot of fans were put off, but it was undeniably an impressive game. Sadly it was probably the last AAA RTS game of the era...

If they add Africa they are going to have to be very careful with how they depict it, slavery, colonialism. I really want the game but they have to put a lot of thought into it so they don't open themselves up to immediate social media death. Sadly that's the time we live in. Wish we could just enjoy things.

Warhammer campaigns? I haven't bought anything since Atilla, when I felt too scammed to buy anything, but Rome Total War Remastered is very good. I can recommend buying it. The reason they focus so much on improving graphics is because its easy to do and it sells, while fixing AI takes alot of time and money and kids don't notice if the AI is broken

Since Remastered is there I stopped playing Rome 2 and the other TW's
@TeunisD4 күн бұрын
The army limit mechanic is thus just used to distract and avoid the problematic Campaign AI that needs much more work and that is bad for profit. By just limiting the player ability within the campaign the faults in the AI and "steamrolling" as I do in Rome 1 is not so easy anymore in order to create the perspective of a long drawn-out campaign. Anyway, the new Rome Remastered with Mods is much better than any TW I have seen before. By instead increasing the Map Size the unit spam in the beginning no longer works so well and the game is much more though.

I have been completely unable to get into Manor Lords. The fact that there's only one static map makes it very hard to stay interested, and while it's definitely pretty, getting to the point where anything exciting happens is a bland experience. Maybe I just need to put more time in, but it's been a disappointment for me.

I like RTWR more than R2, actually... The AI of the 2nd version also as bad as me playing TW when I was a kid. The AI is not something magic, its code, and developers that are not investing the time in AI give us broken AI. The new RTWR with Mods is actually awesome and more like how Rome 2 should have been.

Putting thrones of Britannia lower them Attila is a crime imo, at least thrones is playable whereas Attila as you mentioned is a hardware nightmare with pathetic performance and tbf Attila looks darker and blander then Britannia does imo. Rome 2 had its issues early on but currently as it stands its still one of my favorites for sure higher then napoleon, Attila, Britannia, and the entire warhammer series along with troy and pharo. There's a reason why people still play rome 2 and the others are dead.

Imo, the biggest contributor to the immersion/weightiness of battle is the fact that the soldiers come from your population. When I’ve spent hours constructing a village with a delicate economy that barely manages to keep everyone alive, every single loss on the battlefield feels like a major blow. My one issue with the game is the mercenaries-once a stable economy established, paying for a few months of mercenaries is negligible in cost and can easily provide the military might to fend off a band of raiders before they even near my village. They take away the challenge of equipping a powerful enough militia to keep my people safe, and basically ensure that the only time I will ever need my own people to fight is when I am the aggressor. Especially in the early game, where I would otherwise have to consider the implications of sending off half of my working age men to go clear a bandit camp, I can just pay 45 silver for a group of mercenaries to do it for me. The retinue system feels much more balanced since it costs a significant amount of silver to equip a 24-man unit, but the mercenaries are just way too cheap in my opinion and eliminate the implications of battle that make this game so great. I think they should be FAR more expensive, and idk if this would be historically accurate but they should add an extra fee for every mercenary who dies in battle so that I can’t just recklessly throw them into battle knowing their deaths basically don’t matter.
