Edit: Thank you to everyone correcting me on ETA movements. Tudor Phased them out for the"T600" (Sellita) about 2 years ago. The design, "smiling dial" and new in-house caliber stuff still stands 😉Distracted by last years Sports Watches, Tudor gave us a fresh look for the Black Bay (released in Two Tone) that was muddled amidst diamond dials and bezels 2:40 These show us how the collection is about to change. Your variant with gilt hands /indices and jubilee bracelet looks great. Slight correction, these less sport Black Bays have not used the ETA movement for a couple of years now, they are using a Sellita SW200 variation, they call it T600. Tudor claims it does ‘chronometer performance’, but they are not actually chronometer certified.
@scott7841 Жыл бұрын
I like the idea of an in-house movement for these watches. And it's the reason I bought a BB58 (blue) 1 1/2 years ago versus a Black Bay 41 for my 19cm wrist (even though I would have preferred the case size of the 41 better for my wrist size). Hopefully, they will start putting the T-FIT clasp on all their new releases. Having an on-the-fly adjustment on the clasp is much better. Personally, I'd also like to see the bezels (on the divers) changed from aluminum to ceramic. I know aluminum is used for vintage purposes. But ceramic is superior in terms of scratch resistance; although I kind of doubt they would change this. I do like Tudor! It's kind of like what Rolex used to be many years ago; and it doesn't carry all the baggage of Rolex. Thanks for another great video!

This is probably my surest guess as to what Tudor will release later this month. I definitely will miss the smiley, but the other changes are exactly what I would like. The other thing I would most be looking forward to is a 39mm option like they released in the S&G. I'm a bit of a giant and while the 41 technically fit my, something was off about it. It didn't feel right. In contrast, the 36mm version that so many seem to love felt too insignificant and looked tiny. 38-39mm is great for a compact sports watch on my wrist, so that could be the perfect size. Interestingly, my rep at my local AD said the 39mm watches are really Tudor's best sellers, their sweet spot. I think this will fit in nicely with that, assuming a 39mm is released as well. It also might make me a bit less irked at the discontinuation of the Explorer 39mm, which fits beautifully on my wrist.
@ID-Guy Жыл бұрын
Agree Sean. Truth be told, I didn't even realise they'd launched a 39mm until I was editing the video together! 41,39,36 etc. It's crazy! They've hit every threshold they need for wrist sizes... they deserve a bravo! Guaranteed we'll be seeing all these sizes in steel 🥃

Hi! Are you sure Tudor still uses ETA 2824-2 for the standard Black Bay line? I’ve read about Sellita movements instead. I’ve purchased an older one with two straps from my Wempe boutique last year. It has got an ETA inside. But the newer models, sold with one strap only, are more likely to have an Sellita. Personally I don’t want Tudor to change it. Tudor could also reintroduce the Prince line - discontinued in Europe for quite a few years & now discontinued in Asia. This would give Tudor the Oyster Perpetual GADA alternative that isn’t a Black Bay - there are way too many variants of the Style & Glamour (which no one talks about & are meh) so they could be cut back or discontinued. If they do a Prince line there won’t be a cyclops or fluted bezel - these are now reserved exclusively for Rolex

Great video. I picked up a Black Bay 41 to mark a professional occasion and wear it almost every day at work. I absolutely love it. In fact, over time I have grown to love it more. In house movement or not. My question when I look at all the recent Tudor releases is whether the Black Bay line is becoming somewhat redundant. All it takes is a refresh of their dress watch line and the Pelagos, Ranger and a dress watch or two could replace the Black Bay's. Curious to know what your thought on it is, from a product line perspective.

I bought a BB36 in early 2019 over the 58 and this was before Tudor switched from ETA to Sellita. I think the ETA movement would rival most in house movements as it keeps fantastic time for an ‘off the shelf movement’. While it’s incredibly comfortable to wear I did have to buy a half link from uncle straps (previously uncle seiko). If it had the t fit clasp it truly would be perfect IMO. Great content as always!

Smiley dial ETA Tudor Black Bay heritage is more valuable on the preowned than the chunky in-house version and so it will continue with this obsession of in-house. 12.7mm compared to nearly 15mm makes a massive difference on the wrist. I'd never swap my Smiley blue bezel for anything in-house including the overhyped 58.

As a former BB36 owner, I’m really excited for the upcoming changes, save the loss the of that wonderful smile. Better power reserve, fantastic. Adjustable clasp, amazing. More elegant case, yes please. But the loss of that smile, devastating. I can literally say that it put a smile on my face and more than a few rough days. If Tudor somehow finds a way to keep the smile, add a new movement, crown, and clasp, refine the case, and add the gilt you mocked up…. grand slam. What sealed my interest is the performance of my recently purchased pelagos lhd. While it will never compare to my 16600t bought 20 years ago, it holds its own value regardless of the identical 5k msrp of old. Plus the horologist of 43 years agrees, he even said Tudor are a modern bargain, all things considered of course.

To me, this is the best watch Tudor have in the catalogue. They just need to refine the design a little bit. Give it an oyster case just like the S&G, reduce the size of the crown, add in-house mvt, refine the bracelet, add more dial colors and the whole world will want one. However I can imagine Rolex wouldn't like that as it would be a serious competitor to the oyster perpetual.

I'm a big fan of the curved smiley text. It's a bit strange we don't see it more often - we're putting straight pegs in round holes. Off the top of my head I can only think of Rotary's logo, and Squale's following the shape of the dial (but I'm sure there's more I don't know or can't remember...). But it feels good to see it for some reason. It's possible that it's Tudor's intention to use this change to signify a transition to something new, in which case I can see the smile coming back when they start using some newer generation of movement. A bit like on our British coins where when there's a new monarch and new coins are minted; the new monarch's face points in the opposite direction to the last. Feels a bit like that to me

Having an option for a Jubilee bracelet would be nice but I'd stick with the oyster, the Jubilee works far better on the S&G in my humble opinion. All my ETA 28xx's have proven bulletproof and accurate for over a decade, to me that is. Personal experiences may vary. i don't baby my watches in any way, but i do take care of them. An ETA 28xx is all the movement you'll ever need in a (sports)watch. The 2824-2 may no longer be considered 'luxury' in its standard incarnation, but in it's most basic out-of-the-box shape is sooo much better than the Japanese entry-level 'competitors' (seiko 6R, miyota 9000) it's just no contest. My ETA's have taken the same beatings as all of my Seiko's/Miyota's, and despite the reputation of the latter for being 'not that accurate but very solid', it's the ETA's (and Sellita's) that have never failed me. My top 3 most lover watches are all still Seiko's though. In a perfect world it would be possible to buy a Seiko designed watch(dial especially) with an ETA/Sellita-movement and consistent QC. For the price Seiko is asking nowadays it should be perfectly possible for an entrepreneurial individual, if only the politics would allow it. The whole world would wear Presages and Prospexes...

I just bought a smile face bb36 and it's on an uncle seiko jubilee with the OEM clasp and it's amazing, much nicer than the new ones

I like your proposed changes! I understand why you left the snowflake hand, but without a rotating bezel I think it's irrelevant.

The case is also less slab, and more Oyster. It's so much nicer, especially in the 31mm for the ladies. I for one have never liked the smiley face, even before I knew what it meant.

Great point! It'll also be 1mm thinner (so I've found) - there's going to be tonnes of these lil tweaks that'll improve this machine so nicely. Pretty exciting to see a facelift done so well in this day and age 😉

@@ID-Guy I think it's one of the biggest transformations of a watch. It turns a Frog into a Prince. Especially with the new Silver Dial. The 31mm or (36mm maybe) is the ladies dress watch of 2022\2023 IMO. It would be nice if the steel 41 blue dial looked a little less 'Lego' but I am basically going to get one anyway.

@@ID-Guy I would go as far as saying that the 31mm is actually a better choice than a Datejust (no date for starters) and so is the first Tudor that is genuinely better than a Rolex.

I like the old crown and the new crown and you can buy an Unckle seiko jubilee for the bb36. Tudor bb36 stopped using ETA a while ago they use sellita

Im glad they've got rid of the radius'd text and I much prefer the shield motif, they can drop the rose for me.

I have the blue dial 41 smiley. I've been expecting this.

My guess is that with Rolex moving upmarket into haute, and Tudor filling in the vacuum, management wants to sever ties with the old smiley face Tudor. In the corporate branding sense with the Shield makes more sense with Tudor sponsoring events like the Nazare surfing championships, endurance cycling and World Rugby. IMO they should have at least leaned into the heritage with at least one model using the smiley face and rose logo on the dial, while moving the shield to the crown.

Funny isn’t it .. people give Bremont endless grief for having used ETA and Sellita movements .. but can’t abide the idea of Tudor championing an in-house calibre? I own two Tudors, A BB Chrono, and the BB GMT, and I very much like the MT calibre movements.

If they're going to take away the smiley face, they'd better give me the T-fit clasp in return or no deal! Ok, I already have the BB36, perhaps the new model in blue then?
@ID-Guy Жыл бұрын
I have it on good authority that hte Jubilee will come equipped with T-fit (think they've already been debuted) - it'll be a stellar machine when it drops! Also would be fantastic with some colours 🥃

Here's a thought for you IDGuy, if Tudor has moved production to Le Locle then they will have to remove "Geneve" from the dial as Le Locle is in the Canton of Neuchâtel and NOT Geneva. So have fun figuring out how the text on the dials is going to balance from here on out....

I'm indifferent to this change but having ETA is more convenient for servicing. But having in house movement is cooler on paper.

Transitioning the remainder of the BlackBay watches to the changes Tudor made in the 31/36/39/41 steel and gold versions would draw me to seriously consider the steel 36mm BB. I keenly desire the extra power reserve and COSC certification. Having a Selita or ETA movement does make the watch easier to service, but the detriment is the power reserve. 15 to 20 years from now, when Tudor brings about a rose in shield motif at the 12 o'clock and goes to one line of text above the 6 o'clock, many will be clamoring much the same as today regarding the smiling 'self winding'. The cheese is moving, time to move to the cheese.
