Well said, they do! Too desaturated. But probably useful as we can apply two coats of different colours for infinite hues. I still don't think this is THE way of painting. Opaque paint just can't be replaced. This is merely one more tool

I think they appear that way because they didn't use a pure white prime, they did grey with a zenithal of white, so it doesn't come out as vibrant as it normally would with white.

I have a 24-set of them since last week, and they do appear a tiny bit more desaturated over grey or black with a white zenithal, but a second coat usually fixes that (if you want to fix it, I actually find it fairly useful for shadows and lower midtones). It's also not an issue at all when used over white. Also, it might partly be due to their camera setup or how they thin them, because mine generally seem more saturated (except for that light grey-blue, but that one is obvious, no?) Can't really compare it to citadel contrasts though as I don't own any, because I don't support GW's frankly pretty disgusting overpricing policy.

@@sciencesold_ I keep seeing all these review videos and they all do the same thing (some sort of zenithal or non white base color). I'd just like to see them over Vallejo white primer or citadel white scars primer. Then we'd have a nice comparison. Same with Army Painter speed paint & citadel contrast paints. Just white primer and then paint! On a side note every time I've done a zenithal and then tried using either my contrast paints or speed paints it feels like a total fail. Very desaturated/discoloration.

I would like to see this test again without the wet pallet. I didn't use one when I tested a couple of the colors and had different results. I had a dark blue and velvet red and they went on with a punch of color. I think your thinning in the wet pallet changed your results.

I dont think airbrush is good express paint aplicator. You need wet puddle where paint can distribute itself and sink in recess areas leaving highligted areas pigmentless.

I know its not the intended method, but contrast paints are great for preserving any values you get from zenithal highlights and other stuff. Would be interesting to see if the express paints function similarly

Why put contrast paints with an airbrush? The paint doesn't get into crevices this way, unlike when put with a brush. It might be good as a filter / glaze on flat surfaces, though.

@@Deus888 because you use undershading. You don't let the Paint to the Work but do it yourself then let the P Paint assist. Because contrast is transparent it works really good. I do it all the time. Plus with an Airbrush you get a smoother Finish compared to applying it via brush

Given their translucency and consistency they act like inks but apply like paint through an airbrush allowing you to take full advantage of underpainting. For a better idea of how well they work, I recommend watching Vince Venturella's Hobby Cheating video on painting big monsters (episode 309 of his hobby cheating series)

It's just like using an airbrush and ink to do tinting. It looks good but definitely the "contrast" part of the paint doesn't do much, and if you're using an airbrush you're likely mixing in your own additives, so I don't see what the hype is. I guess it's premixed, but basically any of the existing contrast style paints will work fine

One of my curiosities with Express Paint was how they'd behave over metallics. I was told the result might disappoint due to their matte finish, but I am happy to see that they do not disappoint. The result looks great. Can't wait for them to become available at my local hobby shops.

The matte finish does knock the metallics down a bit though. In my tests so far I've drybrushed and/or highlighted some parts again afterwards to keep the metallic look, but then again, that's what you should do anyway.

I'm not a fan. All the colors to me look really washed out. They flow a lot but are way too light. They need more pigment. Maybe with multiple coats it would be okay but at that point I would just use layer paint.

Even with all that studio equipment and perfect setting, and well-versed miniature painters...those models still look just...meh. I dont know if i should expect more out of speed paints. It just seems they are hyped so much and to say they "murder" citadel contrast...nah. You guys do realize citadel also makes a contrast medium that can thin out theirs just the same as what you found with Vallejo, right?

Vallejo makes great stuff.. here's the problem though.. When I order GW paints, they tend to arrive. Vallejo just kinda shows up when it wants to due to supply issues even now. At least from an FLGS perspective. Keeping True Metal, Model Color or Model Air in stock properly is an effort in futility.

I think as Juan Hidalgo also put it, these are an excellent baseline for a paint job. The black definitively need 2 coats, but with 1 coat you can darken another color without using medium..

I am so excited for these to come out, I hope they do some new skintone sets, they tend to be my favorite, like army painters onyx color, i haven't tried it but pics look great, then hopefully they do a more bright and vivid red, a more bright turquoise, one that leans more blue, and one that leans more green, and a good blue cyan, maybe a blood for the blood gods like effect, I just got into model painting about 6 months ago, really been loving it, I got so many sets and different paints, so far Vallejo has been my favorite, I love bright vivid color's, also I tried citidel blood for the blood gods, that is amazing, I tried reaper witch is great, they have a red that I love, so bright and beautiful, huge brand is pretty great, but a lot more gel like, it mixes well with other stuff still, oh and P3, they got a perfect shade for a nes jason, witch I painted, I had such a hard time finding the right shade, and it took like a week to finally find that, and I think it is almost perfect, there was a citidel one, and this other brand that had a skull, I forget the name, but the citidel doesn't make that color no more I don't think, an the ones left cost like 70 buck's, and the skull one was quite high as well, there is still some i haven't tried that I definitely want to, like scale 75, but man that price is high, but yeah, I can't wait to try these new Vallejo paints, hopefully they are out soon,

And i have the full range of gw contrast, warcolors antíthesi, scalecolor instant potions and the greenstuffworld dipping inks, and i got half the rage of speedpaint, i dont like them much, in my opinion the speedpaint is the least good of all the lines, i do hope they will fix the issus with the reformulation they are doing, i would love it if work properly and that all the 24 old and the 66 new color will not have those issus

@@komma8203 I like the Speedpaints. For me they are the easiest to wet blend with. Makes painting my Harleys take a fraction of the time. I also have the space for an airbrush and have been varnishing all my minis for years so the reactivation isn't THAT big a deal. I like some contrasts (Mantis Warrior Green is probably my favorite, it's perfect one coat for eye lenses) but I hate the pots and they are overpriced in my opinion.

Its only the Two Thin Coats paints that are as expenciv pr ml as far as i know. And all hobby paints are pretty good, and as long as they work for you and youre way of painting, thats all that matter, they are to much work to use in the way i paint, so i just use another brand.

It's hard because we were mixed. Dave didn't like the black as a black, because he prefers to either use contrast style paints for rapid painting of paint normally. So if it doesn't do the job in one coat why. Murray loved the lighter pigments even on the black as it allowed control of colour through multiple layers.

The only one that really sang with it was that bear, but not a lot of models have so much texture. They don't. I've been using the velvet red for a couple months and have had no reactivation. My first test model was just using a number 2 brush and splashing it on a primaris marine. It came out so well that I plan to do a full army when the paints make it state side.

not a bad choice, but they do seem kind of desaturated to me. They do sort of remind me of watercolors, and they certainly have their own place in an artist's toolkit, but killing Contrast Paints, Speed Paints and the various others? yeah, no. They might get added to the toolbox, but they will not be replacing anything I already use. They just don't really... pop, you know? The colors are less vibrant than either Contrast or Speed Paint, and i just can't see them ever replacing my currently used paints. An addition to my toolbox, yes. absolutely, but not a replacement.

Meh, it looks like its adjacent to scale 75 instacolour. I guess the question I have to ask is why would I switch to these, when I already have AP Speed paints for bold translucent colours, S75 Instacolour for glaze/wash paints, and contrast for bold opaques that flow nicely? The market is crowded and vallejo, despite making great paints, isnt wowing me with these. Also the fact that their gamecolour paints are $2 more expensive per pot retail now is a harder pill to swallow.

I have been experimenting with my own set of "contrast" paints which I've made from my own recipes. It's basically a denser wash. It flows into the recesses easily but also clings to the top layer because of the acrylic medium. I have made them from inks, acrylic artist grade paint, oil painta and mica powders. Each type is slightly different and has its own application. I also use airbrush paints both with an airbrush and a brush. It has a very similar consistency to contrast paints and works just as well.
