I'm incubating my first eggs and today is my first candling. Are there any serious consequences if I "misdiagnose" an egg as a good one and leave it in? If I'm not sure, could I do another candling prior to the next one that you're supposed to do around day 18 (I think)?
@ChickenHues

It could explode if it’s bad. I almost Always leave them in until I’m sure. Unless you smell a bad smell or the eggs are really dirty , it should be fine to wait.

Is it a dark egg? I would find that somewhat encouraging. Often air cells Won’t show up well unless there is some development. Check again in a few days or another week.

Thank you for making this video and posting it so I could see it tonight. I have some goose and chicken eggs that I'm trying to hatch for the very first time. I have backup orders with a couple of hatcheries, but I want to start on the road to hatching my own eggs. It's a nervous learning process, if only because It is so very hard to tell if a rooster (or gander) is doing their job until you check. I was thrilled to find that both my gander and my roosters are doing their jobs. And I'll be expecting the first new additions to the flock before the end of the first week of March. Thank you again.

Hello! I have a question 🙋‍♀️ I’m incubating some quail eggs, today is fifth day of incubate. I see some veins but I don’t see it moving, so are they dead or still alive?
@ChickenHues
@ChickenHues 2 жыл бұрын
You won’t see movement that early. If you see veining it sounds like they’re developing!

Does it matter which side is down when you are candling? We have been putting pointy side down in the incubator and when candling. First time incubating. Also we can't see inside the eggs with the candlers we have tried. (blue and green eggs) Day 10
@ChickenHues
@ChickenHues Жыл бұрын
Pointy end down in the incubator and candle with the pointy side UP. Then the air cell is at the bottom and it is easier to see. Colored eggs are very hard to see into. I have a video called how to candle dark eggs. You might get some tips from that.

Hi we seem to be having a problem with our incubator? The air sac is not on top or bottom but rather the sides, there appears to be development though. I heard this may cause deformities. What do you recommend?
@ChickenHues
@ChickenHues Жыл бұрын
Are the eggs upright in the incubator? If so, make sure that the pointy ends are down. I’ve had them hatch ok like that but it’s unusual to see it.

maybe you need to get another rooster, but then they might spend more time fighting than entertaining the ladies?
@ChickenHues
@ChickenHues 4 жыл бұрын
It’s more peaceful with just one in the winter. When they’re in the smaller area one rooster usually keeps the other cowering in the coop. But it’s definitely better for fertility. This is about what I had last year with one rooster and had no problems. He must be too busy attacking my boot to do his job. Lol

They get thrown away. I’d rather not give them to the chickens or dog because of bacterial concerns from being in the incubator. That’s what I do. Best of luck on yours! What kind are you Incubating? Let me know how they do!

Very informative and interesting, Stacie. Questions: 1. After lighting and you see development, should you place the egg with the air pocket right-side up or down? 2. What happens to the undeveloped eggs? (eat, toss, or give to the chickens?) Enjoyed a full-watch. Have a fine weekend.
@ChickenHues
@ChickenHues 4 жыл бұрын
The air cell is at the top when they’re in the incubator. That is the wider end. I just toss the eggs that didn’t develop or stopped. It would probably be ok to give them to the chickens, but my concern is bacteria from being in the incubator. Great questions! Thank you!

I grabbed some chicks this year. This is my first year with my chickens. They've just recently started laying AND I just recently noticed one is a rooster. The question of the day was how to tell if an egg is fertilized or not. Mt internet search led me to candling, and 15 minutes later I'm here on your video. I understand you're trying to breed, but I'm trying to eat and gift eggs.
@TheBeamanater107
@TheBeamanater107 2 жыл бұрын
I'll incubate and hatch whatever egg is fertilized. I'll figure out what to do with the chicks later. I just don't want to Crack an egg and dump a fetus in my pan.
@ChickenHues
@ChickenHues 2 жыл бұрын
Chances are if you have a rooster that they’re fertilized. It makes no difference in the quality or taste of the eggs. A chick will not start to develop unless the eggs is kept at 99 degrees under a hen.
