No. It’s better for them if they don’t. Their legs can’t handle jumping up and down because of how they’re built.

I know this video is old, but I love it. That is how I grew up with chickens, and so did my parents and grandparents. They didn't buy chickens every year and had no incubators. The chickens reproduced on their own. They also only supplemented with grains and never bought store bought feed, and the chickens always free ranged and got kitchen scraps. Same principles I'm sticking to, too, except I supplement with feed as well as other grains and kitchen scraps. But I never have free choice feed available all day. Works really good for us on cutting the costs for raising and maintaining our flock 😊

Mine must be different. It is too hot for my chicks to touch it without it burning them. It’s not for them to touch it and be warmed up. It RADIATES heat downward and warms them up that way. Lay a thermometer under it and you will see it reach 100 degrees easily.

I prefer to keep my older hens in the same flock as they probably have laid a batch of eggs that would have grown up to be their successors. But to help with that, if the chickens are too young to lay, Id buy hens that are laying and just add them to my flock. There is chance for chick mortality while theyre young so there’s always room for more chickens. Old hens would die out too so there will be slots that need to fill out anyway.

One silly question: I have a daughter and I refuse to let her eat all the crap that is in the supermarkets. I am starting a garden and I want to start a little flock for my family consumption. I am thinking of meatbirds and hens for laying (I do have quite a lot of experience with laying hens, but not meatbirds). I wanted to get some fertilized meatbird eggs, and the question is what to do with the meatbird hens. Do I keep them for eggs? Can I harvest them the same as the boys? I was thinking on keeping maybe 2 to 3 hens and a rooster so I can hatch my own meatbirds, but I don't know if its worth to harvest the hens too, for family consumtion. I am from spain and traditionally hens are used mostly for stewing and chicken for almost everything else.
@ChickenHues
@ChickenHues Ай бұрын
Hello! It depends on what strain of meat birds you have there. We have Cornish Cross hybrids and they don’t breed naturally and may not reproduce true. They tend to not live long, either. We raise them and process the hens and roosters at the same time.

Thank you. Many MANY years ago, I lived on a farm. I’ve watched chicken eggs & even duck eggs I swiped from a few nests because my birth father wanted to hatch some to give to a family friend in order to bring some diversity to his ducks. About two weeks ago, my daughter brought fresh eggs from a friend’s chickens. I can’t explain why I had the suspicion at first, but I checked the eggs with a flashlight. I found three possibles & missed one. I’m thankful I was the one cracking the eggs that day. The eggs aren’t refrigerated. They’re eat here before ever needing to water check them. The three questionables are in a heated box with a dish of water for humidity. It isn’t a proper incubator but I have hatched finches this way. Oh, the most possible egg has the air sack & I’ve seen veins. My daughter agrees with me about the veining. Time will tell. Wouldn’t you know it. It’s a dark brown egg. 🤦🏽‍♀️

I have a hen and it appeared she wasn’t going to be a good mum so I put her chick along with her eggs in my incubator. But it turned out she was a great mum and I put that chick back and then a few days later a couple more chicks. Then a few days later another 2…all is going very well. The oldest chick is now 20 days old and I have 2 more chicks that have hatched in the last 2-3 days in the incubator…is it way too risky to try putting them under her. Even possibly putting them under her and letting them be with her briefly to get used to it and putting back in the brooder during the day and bit by bit…get them used to each other?
@ChickenHues
@ChickenHues 3 ай бұрын
I’m not sure. I’ve never tried with that big of a difference. It will totally depend on the hen. It seems like they would need to be with the hen all the time though or they won’t know to follow her. I, personally, wouldn’t risk it, but keep a close eye if you do try.

Nice video. I want to share something I just learned and tried with success. I was told not to move my broody till she had chicks under her. I tried this all night by securing her away from other hens. Then in the morning once she had bounded with them I was able to move her successfully. ( note : she adopted 4 chicks at 1.5 week broody) I moved her with 1 egg which seemed to remind her what she was supposed to be doing. ❤🐓 they are all different. This may help someone.
