Hello Martin, I am an amateur fabricator/welder and I am restoring a van (a Supercharged Transit). I am also a methodical but slow worker so bear that in mind when I offer the following points: - that panel could be made with basic tools. I believe the pro's here when they say an hour, for me it would be more like an enjoyable 5 hours. That said, it does look like a nice section that they have made. - TBF, "cutting, grinding and cleaning" can take up most of the time. I didn't see what they started with, but again I would expect it to take me a few hours (depends on the state of the van, could be 1 to 5hours). - once the above is done the welding doesn't take much time at all! - I can also HIGHLY recommend getting a MIG welder, watching youtube tutorials and practice! Start off with small repairs and within 2 days of use the welder would have paid for itself and you will have a very useful new skill which will constantly improve. T4's are old vans and old vans ALWAYS need welding. -A 'red flag' for me when judging other's work is when a repair is rusting within a few days. This shows a lack of what I call 'Welding aftercare'. Any welded repair will rust at an accelerated rate if it is not prepped and painted afterwards. It doesn't take long. I aim to make my repairs last 20+ years and this stage is critical to that aim. This might seem like a set back but some very good things can come out of it. I wish you the best. If you see a supercharged Transit coming the other way on the Sussex Roads give me a wave! PS thanks for the videos!

Wow, like don’t get me wrong I’m still watching this as I’m typing, I brought a T4 that’s spent its life by the sea, there’s been a few surprises, originally it was just the passenger sill and arch I targeted, the step fell to bits and my jacking point below it bit the dust in grinding the sill out. Your downside is they don’t make a left hand sliding door component, they are like hens teeth. But the welder fabricator should have stoped there, they shouldn’t have chopped anything out, they shouldn’t have forged ahead without your say so.good welding is all in the prep work, you need to go back too good metal, otherwise you’ll spend a day blowing through bad metal and end up cutting back further till you have something you can weld onto. With cars it’s hard, paint can hide the thinning metal, it was only 0.8mm originally, honestly that’s hard enough to weld without warping and distorting. Now I’ve got to the end of your video (amazing content, very well edited, the execution is perfect. I’ve subscribed 👌) I can honestly say, from my point of view that you have been ripped off. I brought my van with a smidge of knowledge of what was ahead of me 🤷‍♂️ unfortunately at that point I knew nothing about welding, absolutely nothing, I’m an electrician by trade, I was focused more on the inside of the van 😂 luckily I work somewhere that teaches accredited welding, I spent 2 weekends learning how to mig weld, its very different to welding on your drive, but I got to play, I gained experience. I welded multiple patches into the rear quarter panels of a ford RS turbo, I was taught how to bend and manipulate bits into position and weld them without warping the shit out of them, no joke I made plenty of runs that warped a butt joint into an ash tray/bowl configuration 🤷‍♂️ I’m now able to weld body parts onto the van, I can fabricate parts I need, I actually don’t think there is one part of it I’m incapable of making myself with basic tools. I want to rebuild the van because although its engine is in perfect condition, its body isn’t. Unfortunately my mental health isn’t in a great condition, but my body is. It may be a distraction. This is my personal goal to work towards to get better, I want to create every inch of what is the van. I’m really tempted to create a channel for the build, By the time I’m finished the welding stages I’ll be lucky to have spent 2k on her, I think I’ve only spent £600 in panels and £30 on a sheet of .8mm steel, I’ll also be able to see where the prep work went in and I’ll have pride in that. But no joke the prep work on a T4 is hard, it’s exhausting. Volkswagen loved their underbody sealer 🥺 I would like to see more of your T4 though

There's nothing more important that looking after yourself, and as someone who's been there before, I hope you find some help and support, either from those around you, or from other options. I used Betterhelp years ago, and that really helped me. As for your T4 - you should definitely document it. You should also, 100% absolutely give me the details of where you learnt to weld - as I clearly need to find out more about that course. We'll be back with more content on the T4 in the coming weeks. A lot has been happening recently, with work, family and just life in general. So it's all felt quite relentless and it's left us a bit behind schedule with videos. Omg yes you have and you should consider suing for damages, I do body work repair on cars and vans and recently did all the rust repair on a T5 and painted £500, and threw in a full cutting compound of the paint work of the whole van and sealed it, although it was a work colleague of my partners husbands van I wouldn't have charged much more for anyone else because the rust problems on T4 & T5s are only small bits such as arches, bottom of doors the sills around door handle and mirrors, i would certainly contact trade and standards and get it logged, so sorry you where conned

As I watched I was thinking you've been super clear on the terms and I think your observation on day 4 was indicative of they way the garage worked - he even admitted he would be gone by 2pm and expected you to pay a full day's money. I'm not a professional vehicle restorer but I'm mechanically savvy and would have attempted that repair myself, even for me I reckon 1 full day. And what sort of garage can't source a repair panel, I think it was clear they were going to fleece you right from the start, they saw you with a project you wanted fixing and were determined to charge you their initial estimate. Where to go from here, I would start with taking the vehicle to another garage for a rough idea on what that would have taken to do, I think most garages would say a day or so - just to give themselves some headroom. Also, the rate per day was as if 3 people were working on it, that was a solo job apart from when welding is being done and someone is on fire watch. I'd then talk to your bank, as to what they think, can they help you and potentially citizens advice. Wonder if you could do a charge back? Trading standards could be a good move but the trouble with this situation is the garage were pretty slippery from the start, but I think the day 4 coverage will be sufficient to support your case, in that you were well over charged for the work, the publicity might be enough to get some of your money back though - small claims court could work as it's under the limit for that. Good luck and keep us posted.

I was an automotive fabricator and welder (panel beater) for 17 years, that’s shocking. I would have had that step and sill done in a day or two and sealed/primed probably £650 all in. In my opinion yes you were scammed, I know you can’t weld but you could try and learn, also as for panels, I’m sure you could find a commercial breakers yard that could supply panels cut off a van and then buy a welder which can be cheap depending on the type of welding you think you could pick my KZbin, at this point you could depending on what welder you decided to try would probably be half of what you spent. I started using an arc welder then after a bit of self teaching got a mig welder. I am been lucky with my vehicles and I became mechanical minded very quick, this the days before KZbin. The best part is, once you have your decided welder, your could be repairing more if needed, just take your time learning, and practice on scrap, and you will get the confidence to fix most parts. That’s how I started. My last build was a steel trailer to carry my large cbr 1000 which it did brilliantly. No doubt people will shout at me saying this but welding is a great skill to have as long as you use the correct safety equipment and a decent welder.

This is shocking and I would agree that the bodyshop has tried to take advantage of you based on the work they have actually completed. I am a mechanic and used to run a T4, most panels are available however I can only see the panel you required for a right hand door but likely if you contacted VW Heritage or Just Kampers (both UK Companies) they would be able to confirm if it is available for the left hand door. In my opinion you should discuss this with a reputable bodyshop outwith your area and ask if they will take a look at the work completed to asses and give an estimation of the time required, perhaps a company that specialises in VW or restoration work, as the van has an MOT ypou can take it wherever required. Once satisfied that you have a grasp of everything and feel you have a case I would approach Trading standards armed with your information and ask their advise. I think its unusual for the garage to do the daily rate thing, sounds like they have had customers who've not paid and that's why it went like that. I know that fabrication is definitely more expensive than replacing. You're not paying for the just the metal, but the skill in making a replacement piece thats of good quality. I think the back and forth messaging annoyed him as much as you and that's why they have been a bit unprofessional with regards to pick up times etc As for asking when its ready, they are right to say not sure, as if you turned up expecting it finished and it wasn't for whatever reason, you would be just as unhappy. I feel like they have priced the job on not wanting to do it, so that if they do, they are making way more than they should. So no, not a scam as such. The work looks decent at least. Learn from it and move on, always worth getting multiple quotes for work you're not sure of and recommendations from people you trust.

Really bad to see a body repair shop do such a crap job and rip you off. You need to take legal action using the MCOL service. Cheap and easy to do. Getting rid of rust on a old van is seriously hard work and can only be done properly by taking the bumpers off, getting at the steel you dont see. There are loads of pre cut body panels for the T4 and a good welder/fabricator can easily adapt a panel to make it fit better. To be honest, I would seriously think about whether its better to sell your van and get a newer one in better bodywork condition. Much as its nice to hang on to a van, restoring it always costs a large amout of time and money. Trust me on this - I had a rusty T5 which i restored up to the point of it being fully de-rusted with panels replaced, welding, filling, priming the lot. Took me 5 years whilst holding down a busy full time job. In the end I sold it as a project van to someone else to finish off. It became a money pit of paint, panels, and time. Save your time and consider getting a newer van which has a good bodywork and just needs a conversion into a camper. A lot less stress than restoring a van. I did almost all the restoration work myself but i know if i had paid a professional outfit to do all the work i did to the same standards, you'd be looking at around £12k labour minimum! It is seriously hard and time consuming doing a massive amount of bodywork repairs even for pros.

You should have gone to one of the T4 specialists, those panels are available from Steel wizard fabrications, the arent cheap, but we'll made and fit perfectly. I would hesitate to say you've been scammed, but certainly did not get your moneys worth, that day rate is probably fair, but you didn't get a full day at any point I'd say.

The reviews on the Honest John website are an interesting read - "Can do the work but you need a second mortgage". Sounds like your experience is similar to others. Pay loads of money for little work and get held to ransom. I' d pay trading standards a visit if I was you as this isn't a one off.

Take them to the small claims court, just on the small evidence of deceit you showed you would win the balance of probabilities. you would need an expert to value the work already carried out and deduct that from the amount already paid then thats you claim value, the expert would need to attend court.

Played you for a kiddy kipper. the lesson here is to not buy a rusty van in the first place. You let your heart lead your head I’m afraid. Buy a mig or flux core welder for £150, another £150 on equipment & a grinder. Some scrap thin metal from the skip at your local fabricators to practice on and KZbin vids to teach yourself. Would be done within a week. It’s not too hard to fabricate body panels with hand held tools and a vice.

Get under the van with a torch, film what work may need doing, and post it on youtube. Saying that, you should be able to take your van to a garage and not get fleeced like this.
