You definitely need to consult Ed on this build . Something like this just isn't complete without plywood doors and body panels.
@frankmcgowan9457
@frankmcgowan9457 6 ай бұрын
Oddly, I can say that I helped my friend, Dave, build plywood doors for a CJ-5 as we fit a CJ-2 aftermarket hardtop to it. A mutual friend had totally wrecked his Jeep during the summer while the hardtop was in the garage, making that top available. The body tubs were about the same size and shape (IIRC... it's been about 45 years) but the CJ-5 had more windshield slope than the CJ-2, so the top extended past the windshield top leaving a large opening. We flattened out a piece of aluminum siding (it's what I recall we could find) and attached it to the bottom of the hardtop and the top of the windshield frame and trimmed it to fit. That made a a rather handy shelf space. Thus was born the "Duckbill Jeep" that was seen on central Illinois roads for several winters. 😊

I love the steel tubing you added and your explanation of a unified body. Another way of talking about this type of construction is to say its strength comes synergistically. When I worked in the Chevy Engineering test lab, they had the Vega (1970s) floor pan on a cart. It was sagging at both ends because it was sheet metal attached to nothing. Its strength came later when it was a complete assembly, hence synergistic strength.

Don't use a Rolock abrasive disk on a die grinder to clean things like open diff's, engines, and there covers. The sluff that spins off will stick on the oil wet parts and become an abrasive in the fresh oil. I've witnessed an engine wiped out in 30 miles right after the oil pan gasket had been replaced. All the rods were hammering. Use a good clean edge scraper/knife.

My late Father In Law had a beautiful 46 Jailbar hotrod. It's earliest iteration had it painted in matte Bellflower blue, with white 'seaweed' flames. It looked great, and was roadworthy, here in Australia. I was at a run with him at the time, and he was chatting with an old mate of his, telling him that he'd been rejected from several hot rod competitions because of the matte paint. @@WBatte1 if you remove the hood, fenders, doors, hatch, and core support from an xj, how structurally sound will it remain? 100%. An XJ is at best half stressed skin, and even then the structural floor pan gets most of its strength not from the skin but from the box sections of the frame rails and rockers. Likewise the roof skin does not contribute to the structure, only the roof rails around the edges. Hence sunroofs. Really the firewall is the only part of the unibody that contributes a whole lot of strength without having boxed tubes. And I hope you don't honestly believe that the Google summary of the Wikipedia page is the source of all engineering truth.

As far as fireproofing goes, other than leather blankets, I use 1/4" Hardibacker board (it is non-combustible and used for tile installations). It also keeps heat away from combustible materials. It is available at Home Depot.

Awesome video! By the way your "Free unit" or "Freedom Unit" are Imperial Unit belonging to the British people, the very people American people tried (and succeed) to get rid off during the American revolution. The metric system was created after the French revolution by the People for the People, to make calculation easier and to prevent the People to be cheated by the nobility. So technically, the metric system is the "Freedom unit".

Matt, since this is an open vehicle, you can probably go with a polycarbonate windshield, and chain link fence brackets to hold it in place to the DOM supports.

Can't say I'm not sad being that's the best color I've ever seen on an XJ, and a rust-free unit that's been a part of the channel at that. But I'm so glad to see this being repurposed rather than junked or parted and then compacted!

XJs are surprisingly easy to roll over. Fortunately, they tend to hold up pretty well if it happens. From the pictures and the damage it looks like they weren't going too fast, so hopefully nobody got hurt.

They kinda scare me. I recovered one once after it slipped on black ice and rolled. The roof was even with the top of the doors. I'm not even sure how the driver and passenger managed to make it out with no injuries. They must've been contortionists to crawl out of that thing.

I've rolled two, a '98 and a '96, survived both without a scratch. Both XJ's were totaled, at least insurance wise. I didn't have a garage at the time otherwise I would have bought them back.

Actually, they aren't at all easy to roll. Sure, they have a higher center or gravity than a Mustang or a Camaro, but as SUVs go they aren't at all easy to roll -- unless you drive like an idiot.

On our way to Zion today from Monterey CA. We just passed by Sand Hollow and saw the wrecker on a trailer on an overpass near Hurricane. Made me smile. We almost stopped to get a couple shirts. I was remarking how familiar we feel with this area because of your videos. You guys (and gals) are very entertaining, nice departure from a lot of other you tube content. We might stop in Weds 12/6 if you’ll have us.
