Hey Paul and company: I live 1.5 blocks from both the Chevy military ambulance and the orange Pinto wagon (Pinto was just put on the trailer two weeks ago, had sat motionless in driveway for years). Also, about a block away is an early '70s Mercury Comet (same as Ford Maverick) that looks very solid and clean. Oh, and about 4 blocks from the ambulance is a monstrous military ambulance. 3 axles, maybe a 6x6. Let me know if you want me to check on things. I have plenty of time.

Those Chevy trucks were called 'Commercial Utility Cargo Vehicles'. They had the cargo box versions for contact trucks and ambos, a Blazer model, and a long bed. They used a 24v electrical system and that round socket looking thing on the grill was for the 24v jumper cables that would jump start a tracked vehicle. The M1031, the contact/mechanic truck had a PTO. Regular 6.2ltr Chevy J diesel and those things were quite literally Joe proof. The last ones the Army bought were in 1987 and they were still in service as late as 2010, at least at the Ft Hood railhead.

Love the Pinto wagon! I had 6 different Pinto's in the late 80's and early 90's. Grandpa was a mechanic at a Ford dealer and got them cheap from trade ins. The stand out one's were a woody wagon, a 73 glass back, and a 80 1/2 from the very last production run. The coolest was a 79 Pinto SE (sport edition) with racing stripes and an actual trunk instead of a hatchback. We did an engine swap with a turbocharged 4 cylinder from a Mustang II. Got pulled over for doing 110 mph on the Interstate. Cop wrote the ticket for 85, since no one would believe a Pinto would do 110.

That looks like a CUCV 5/4 Box Ambulance from the 1980's that USMC used before the Hummer Ambulance replaced it. We bought a pile of them in the 80's from the US Military to use in the Canadian Armed Forces until the late 90's. They had a sliding door between the cab and the box, and 4 stretcher racks in the back. The side of the box on that one has a metal frame that holds the red cross which could be removed and flipped to the green side so the red cross wasn't visible. The air conditioning units and heater for the box actually worked pretty well back then.
