Did we MAKE A MISTAKE?? [Ep6 RED SEAS]

Күн бұрын

Are we making a mistake? We are trying to buy a boat in the Caribbean but things haven’t been going to plan. We moved onboard, sailed to another island, delivered two boats across a border and then finally got our survey and sea trial. Now we’re hauled out in the boatyard and it’s time to negotiate on price.
To save time and money, we start work on the simpler jobs and get to sanding, painting the anchor chain, going up the mast and we’re still trying to fix the generator!
And finally, we make our decision on whether to buy this boat.
This is the end of Season 1 so we’re going to take a short break but we’ll be back soon with more adventures - our story definitely isn’t over!

📖 Our Story 📖
We’re Iain and Brioni, a couple of ginger Scots who decided to sell everything and move to the Caribbean in search of a boat that we could call home. We hope to travel the world, to help others in whatever way we can and to share the beautiful stories of inspiring people we meet along the way, all in the hope that it encourages us all to find new ways to make this world a better place.

Having owned and sold a few boats, the best investments one can make OFTEN are the ones you walk away from. Have a true budget for a specific boat and if you don't reach it leave. NEVER work on a boat until you own it.

Stress: You did everything wrong in negotiations. Never look that keen and never start fixing up with your own money someone else’s boat....101 of common sense. Holly crap the buyer played you good. 😳🤒🤐 Addendum: I don't want to come over as if I am picking at your experience, as in the moment it's a different situation. I truly hope you both find a good boat and start living the dream. I think you should look at a monohull boat. You will get a really nice big one for the funds you have remaining. Going for a cat is possible but I am guessing you are digging into the saving at the moment and buy the time you get the boat you wish you will have to spend a lot of that cash. I know you can get free to almost minimum price boats that both can fix up and live than sell on to aim for that dream Cat. Maybe that's the root to take?

Sad you are so right. Working for free on someone else's boat? Both sides are right. You were never buying a new boat so don't expect the seller to pay for everything. On the other hand, your offer to split the expected cost was reasonable, but it appears things had soured to the point where the parties were no longer rational. First time viewer, but will be back. You produce a nice product.

In this case, the challenge we faced was balancing costs of additional boat yard time if the sale were to go thru with the abundance of free time to spend getting to know the boat. By getting started on some of the jobs, we were able to find out more about the boat that the seller may not have wanted us to know. Not a good practice for anyone but makes for a fun twist in the adventure. 😊

Great content and videos. I love your both pluck and fearless attitude. I too have had to walk away at survey, although I was not quite so invested as you are, but hopefully things will work out for the best. Sailing solo two unfamiliar large cats was the best, and by the way, being nervous is OK, but you both kept your cool and did what had to be done. BRAVO!!!! Regardless of the outcome with this boat, I think that yours will be one of the better channels on You Tube. I’m looking forward to your next and many future videos to follow.

Congrats on learning many new things with a good attitude to it all. May I suggest that if you ever go up a mast again that you put on a secondary safety halyard in case the line or the fittings give way. It’s easy to do and might save your life if unseen chaffing is lurking in a place you cannot see. Try to duplicate every critical point of failure. It’s a long way down...
@RedSeas
@RedSeas 3 жыл бұрын
Completely agree. We were living a bit fast and loose with that one. I can say that we were checking the lines as we went but that doesn’t mean there wasn’t some hidden chaff in the mast. Thankfully we got away with it but certainly proof that no one should see us as any kind of role model 😂

A good trick if you don't want to take the heat exchanger apart to find impeller "wings" is to use a wet/dry shop vac and attach it to the hoses on one end then the other of the system and suck them out.

So sorry to hear that. We are all human and make mistakes. Also consider that a catamaran will be considerably more expensive to moor in a mariner. Alot of marina's don't have room for them. Motorsailers are an option. Either way don't give up on your dream. Waiting for retirement is not an option.
@RedSeas
@RedSeas 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Yeah we live and learn. The story doesn’t end here and we are excited to share it after a short break. In general, cats spend a lot less time in marinas than monos simply due to the higher level of comfort at anchor. We certainly know from experience in the uk and med that cats are harder to dock due to older marina designs and just less of them around. Out in the Caribbean, they are a bit more common. I think you will enjoy seeing where this adventure takes us. Hang in there.

@tyroneshulace3203
@tyroneshulace3203 3 жыл бұрын
How much of the "job list" did you find on your own before you hired the surveyor? Did you do a preliminary inspection? Did you do your own more involved secondary inspection before you called the surveyor? This is when/where you assess the seller and his flexibility. You need to develop a rapport. Insist on a phone call conversation. Emails & especially texts are just data transfer. They are not a sophisicated communication. Quite honestly it sounded like someone wanted to make a used boat new. It is not. And an seller is not going to!!! What did the seller tell you it needed? Did you ask if the boat & systems had any quirks or idiosyncrasies in their functions? What did his records show for maintenance? Did he have any warranty claims when new? Buying a large ticket item is not a "blind date" it is more like a Chess game. Did you give the seller a copy of the survey? Not having a buyers broker may be very costly in hindsight. It is a Dino move to hope the seller comes around after this fiasco. BUT, He may be more desperate than you know. You may have also inadvertently tied up his boat from other prospective buyers. Somehow I don't expect you will be getting a Christmas card.......

Pleased to say we found most of the jobs list ourselves but brought in a surveyor to share their expert opinion. In the end we were “happy” with the result.

It’s been an interesting learning curve. Certainly, doing the work on the boat before signing the deal was not a great idea but at the time, things were looking positive. We learnt a lot about the boat thru the jobs we did on it too so it wasn’t all bad. Just unfortunate that we couldn’t come to a final agreement. Stay tuned. The adventure is only just beginning.

The RYA in the UK are working with the Maritime and Coastguard Agency here to remove the requirement for pyrotechnics on small vessels on grounds of safety and effectiveness. Flares last seconds and are difficult as well as expensive to dispose of at end of life. Electronic alternatives (PLB, EPIRB, AIS, LED, etc.) are safer, work for longer, are more reliable and don't need replaced every few years. There's a lot of interest in the industry in going electronic.

It's a buyers market at the moment but being too keen and working on the boat before the deal was sealed reversed that and left the seller calling all the shots. There are thousands of boats on the market and thanks to governments policies, banksters and corona personal wealth is shrinking and many boat owners are being forced to sell. It's a shame it didn't work out this time but stay positive, stick to your budget and the right boat will come along soon enough.

From the first video I was worried you were going to be used to get his boat onto the hard stand where it is easier for him to sell. Disappointed you guys are boatless , good luck with finding another boat. Boats are expensive and you need the funds to make sure you have a safe and reliable boat.

Buying a boat on the hard only, doesn’t make sense at all. Hull inspection inc. osmosis etc. must be done on the hard. Sea trial of course in the water.

@@RedSeas Rather I think you expected him to be reasonable. If I may suggest your error was showing your eagerness for the boat at the very beginning. Rather do the survey have a fair price in mind and that's your price, negotiable on any major repairs. I know it's hard, but you must always be prepared to walk away. There's lots of boats out there. The bad thing is, they may not be close.

Step 1: see a boat you can afford. Step 2: informally agree on a price for the boat with the owner, minus any major cost of fixes that is not defined in the sales advert. Step 3: report. Step 4: Knock price down as per 2. Step 5: buy the boat. Step 6: only work on the boat once you own it. Simple..... follow my instructions and you will not go wrong.

Seller had no leverage with boats stuck on mooring balls and no way to get them. You should have negotiated a break up fee of tens of thousands for basically salvaging his cats if he didn’t make a deal. That way he can’t be a jerk once you get them safe for him. Same with doing 3 mo free work... u guys are nice but got played.
