The Eugene character wasn't done entirely in poor taste; the only questionable part was that Nick Dinsmore who portrayed the character wasn't mentally disabled. The character was actually beloved by the mentally disabled community. Nick actually has a youtube channel called "eugene behind the scenes" where he talks about the character; he talks about interactions and letters he received from fans and it gets quite emotional. Note: I know mentally disabled isn't the best term to use, neurodevelopmental disorders aren't entirely a disability, but a better term wasn't coming to me.

Yep Perry Saturn had a massive temper, he got mad and messed up a jobber really badly, multiple legit punches and knees to the guys face, they threw him out of the ring and the guy landed on his head because he was knocked out when Saturn threw him out, so as punishment they gave him the mop gimmick to try and embarrass him.
@zakk21915 күн бұрын
The Perry Saturn one isn't completely correct. He wasn't given the Moppy gimmick because he got concussed. He got the gimmick because he legitimately tried to hurt a local enhancement talent in a match after he accidentally dropped him on his head during the match.

On the topic of Muhammed Hassan, SmackDown wasn't live back then and the segment was filmed before (or on the day of) the London bombings and before they made him a terrorist the character was actually a pretty good heel who mostly spoke the truth about being discriminated. He was actually an American wrestler with Italian heritage and they could've repackaged him afterwards (could've left him off TV for a few weeks before repackaging him) but instead fired him for something that wasn't his fault.

I haven't read all the comments, but for the Hassan character, he would quickly get into a angle with John Cena who AA or FU as it was called then the wrestler off the stage a a PPV "killing" the character and the wrestler was released by WWE, and never was hired to wrestler anywhere else. BTW he was of Italian decent and is a teacher in Canada if memory serves correctly. To add the Smackdown show was tapped on a Tuesday to air on Thursday back then meaning it could have been cut..but it was Vince McMahon choice like always.

That Muhammad Hassan character actually ruined that guy's whole career. He left the business after that. To make matters worse, in reality, he wasn't even Middle Eastern. He was Italian.
@nikobaehr363815 күн бұрын
Muhammad Hassan's treatment was so tragic, his character wasn't that of a middle eastern terrorist, he was an Arab American who would call out the prejudices that Arab's were facing in America post 9/11. This would naturally make him one of the biggest heels at the time, and he was great at it. The terrorist attack segment that ended his wrestling career was not only in terrible taste and completely tone deaf, in spite of the events surrounding it, but also was just a move that made no sense for his character in general.

@filikos69115 күн бұрын
The Muhammad Hassan one isn't exactly right. Smackdown wasn't live at the time, they taped the show ahead of time and aired it after the attack. He was fired because of pressure from either the UK network Smackdown aired on or the Government. I can't remember which one that one was, but the end result was if he wasn't fired WWE would be fully pulled from TV in the UK. Also, on top of that he isn't even Arab American, he's Italian American. (The real person, not the character)

In response to your comments on the Muhammad hassan character, at points prowrestling has thrived on capitalizing on social/cultural/geopolitical issues. Personally, I have no problem with it. Sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't. As for hassan, in the time he was GREAT. He was one of the best heels ever. The goal is to be hated as a heel. He was too good of a heel for network TV.
