Tony, thanks for another helpful and informative video. Synology just seems to keep packing in more and more useful features into their products. I really hope they don't over do it though and start focusing on quantity of features over quality. So far though I at least have been happy with their products.

Fantastic video Tony. I am now going to look into a similar solution, where I have a VM running that could pass that along to other equipment on my network.

@@QuikTechSolutions You are welcome Tony - earning something deserves it. What I have in mind right now is partially a pipe-dream. I will be looking for an free-ware solution that runs on any operating system (which I can create a VM) that would allow me to connect the UPS cable to m VM server, then be able to gracefully bring down my other network connected servers. I'll find out if that is possible.

This is a long shot, but I've got my Synology NAS connected to a Unifi UDM SE that doesn't have any kind of support for graceful shutdown with a UPS currently. Would be cool to use Synology's UPS server feature to shut it down too. I don't know the innerworkings of how the UPS server sends a signal to other devices, but it seems doable to me.

Thanks for watching. That is a good question. Don’t have any UDM devices, so can’t really do any testing. Have a great day.

Very well laid out! Subscribed! I set up one server and one client NAS. Now how would I connect my desktop to the same UPS (generally the desktop was the device connected directly with the UPS. Maybe by using a USB Hub off of the UPS? Thanks!
@QuikTechSolutions

Hello Gregory, thanks for subscribing. I’m glad you found the video informative and were able to setup the server and client NAS. Not so sure I fully understand what you’re hoping achieve with the Desktop, other than traditionally plugging the power into the back of the UPS. Can you be a little more specific?. Thanks.

Id love to see a video on using the new on-demand sync for Mac using Synology Drive - I tried it but I'm not sure what happens when you click on a folder rather than a file and what happens if there is a folder nested inside another folder? A video would be great.

Do you know if there's a way to get your windows or linux server to also shutdown is they are also plugged into the UPS being controlled by Synology NAS plugged into the UPS USB port?
@QuikTechSolutions
@QuikTechSolutions 6 ай бұрын
Thanks for watching. Great question. I honestly have never tried and am not sure. Typically, the purpose of the UPS is to allow time to safely shut down your sensitive devices in the event of loss of power.

Great video. I have 2 questions. 1. Is there any way to have other NAS units that are not Synology that would be controlled by a Synology in this type of setup? I have a Synology as the server and a WD EX4100 as a secondary and all that happens for me is that when the Synology goes in to safe mode and then turns off, the WD just drops power like a power outage. 2. In a home environment, is it wise to have the NAS restart automatically after power is restored? I worry that there could be multiple power outages as power is attempting to restore. Thanks for your great video and fantastic info.
@QuikTechSolutions
@QuikTechSolutions Жыл бұрын
Hello MR2686 Forever! Thanks for watching and dropping a comment. I’m a Synology only user, so I can’t really speak to your 1st question. My educated guess would be no. Sounds like the reason your WD just drops is because you enabled the setting that shuts down the UPS when the Synology enters Standby mode. Regarding your second question, you do make a valid point. I can see it both ways. I guess it all boils down to one’s own risk tolerance. Again, thanks for watching and have a great day!

Great video (as usual)! It looked like one of the NAS boxen may have still been running DSM 6. Does this work across different DAM versions without issue? Although I'm consolidating anything important onto the DS1522+, I will be keeping the older DS214se and DS112j around for non-critical use. At some point I want to retire the Buffalo unit that is just storing some media, and do something different with the QNAP box since they can't get and keep their OS patched consistently. One step at a time. LOL!
@QuikTechSolutions

Hi Jeremy! Thanks for watching and dropping a comment. All the Synology boxes were running the latest version of DSM 7.1. Was it the flat blue desktop color of the DS920+ that led you to think it was running DSM6? Just curious…. Haven’t tested this across DSM versions. But honestly, I don’t see any reason why it wouldn’t work. One step at a time, or as I say one day at a time is a great approach. Appreciate you watching. Have a great day!

@@QuikTechSolutions Yes, it was the blue background that threw me. Probably because my 112j has the same blue background and is on DSM6.

Hey Tony - having some real issues with DSM 7. I have customers using Synology DS 218j for years as a server for Macs but moved them onto DS420+ on DSM 7, and everything fell apart. It chokes when working on large files and causes the Mac to hang, requiring a reboot. Lots of forums saying it is an issue with the SMB cache - any experience - insight on your end? Having recommended Synology for years, I now find myself doubting their reliability.
@QuikTechSolutions
@QuikTechSolutions Жыл бұрын
Hi Brian, First let me start off by saying thanks for watching my content. I'm sorry you are having these issues. While I am aware the smb cache issues you describe, I have not experienced it first hand. Are you running the latest version of DSM7? Also, is this happening on all Macs or just certain machines? Just curious if the version of Mac OS plays a role since newer versions would have updated versions of samba. Anyway, wish I had more to offer. Keep me in the loop. Have a great day!

@@QuikTechSolutions It is affecting the latest Macs along with older ones. Ones running M1 and ones on Intel. But in one location, one Mac is fine, but the other one has real issues. I am running the latest DSM 7 on both DS420+. I put 2 x 512Gb SSDs in the cache slots under the NAS and still have the issue. It seems to be solely when the user is creating PDFs from InDesign.
