Critics probably liked it more, which makes sense. Critics never like what normal people (the people who actualy matter) like. As soon as a critic says a movie is bad, its definitely good.

I think Cars 3 could have had a better ending. Since most of the movie was focused on winning in other ways like bump drafting, staying in the draft until the final lap, Lightning could consistently get behind Jackson but could never pass him. In any Nascar race, you can stay behind the car in front of you until you get a large tow off of their car and try to perform a slingshot move or slide job. With the slingshot move for the bigger race tracks, pull up along side the car you want to pass and side draft them. This slows their their speed down thus their momentum. Your speed might be the same as theirs, but if you are accelerating and they are slowing, then you have the advantage and can pull ahead. Side drafting works both ways, so Jackson could side draft Lightning back and could take back the position. But if Lightning can time it right and break his drafting tow behind Jackson, Jackson is a sitting duck by no long being bump drafted by Lightning. Lightning could pass Jackson Storm on the last lap of a 1.5 (or greater) track and beat him to the line. For the slide job move for mile tracks and shorter work the best, but could work on other tracks too that have wide, sweeping turns or steep, banked turns. This move is essentially what Doc told Lightning at the end of the first movie. "Drive it in deep, and hope it sticks." You start up high and then use the momentum you gain going down the track (like going down a hill to achieve a speed you wouldn't normally be able to) to the bottom. If you are able to get your nose under the car, your have the better initial entry with greater speed than the car in front of you. However, you will have to break into the corner sooner than the car on a higher line. But if you are able to clear the car you are trying to pass on the dive down below, you may only need to coast when your momentum takes you up high. Aim to pull up right in front of the car you are passing. Then it is playing defense time. Now, because the car you are passing is on the higher side, they will have greater momentum and speed coming out of the corner. So, they will most likely try to do a slide job on your by diving to the inside. All these types of moves, Lightning could have used to beat Jackson Storm. And his whole training would have prepared him for that moment to beat Jackson Storm. Having Lightning McQueen beat Jackson Storm would have been the better ending. Because the moral of the story would be: If you can't out talent them, you have to out think them. If you are in the right spot at the right time, you can achieve anything. If you have trained and prepared yourself for every scenario that might happen, you can then react to the situation while everyone else is scrambling to find a solution, panicking and not doing anything, or giving up all together. Lightning beating Jackson Storm could have been the one race. Because Lightning is the Hero of the story. While the story with Cruz is a good one, the face of the franchise beating Lightning would have been better. Just because a car is fast, doesn't mean they are the first to cross the finish line. Pit strategies, using moves like the slingshot or slide job to pass cars, or going full Ross Chastain and doing the bold move. I would see Lightning McQueen wall riding, but like he did in the first movie with his tires up on the wall and then pushing them off to nudge Chick Hicks... I mean Denny Hamlin to say, "What up Thunder?" Had this been the ending, the story would have helped the movie get more nominations. Had someone like a John Powell or even Michael Giacchino, the music would have carried the movie even more. A great score can often make an average story lightyears better. In my opinion, the Cars 3 score did not match the epicness of Lightning McQueen's final race. The music felt like a Cars 1 score. The music is supposed to grow, mature, and be bigger and more epic for the end of a trilogy. The Cars movies are some of my favorite movies of all time, but the way in which the franchise was handled after Cars 1 could have been way better which let down the entire franchise. But the moral to the whole story of Cars was completely missed by the majority of people: Slow down and live life. People are so quick to overlook Cars, that the bias towards the franchise probably also did not help the nominations either. I could probably go on and on of why the movies are great but the franchise could have been handled better, but I will sign off for now. Thank you for reading my TED Talk!
