However, I had no idea that Joe Ranft was the one who coined that phrase! Not is it a clever line that speak volumes about the process of writing, but it also goes to show just how much of Mater's character came from Joe. The Mater’s Tall Tales shorts are clearly canon. At the of every episode, it ends with the reveal that Mater’s stories actually happened, with McQueen just forgetting them as if it never happened. So yes, it’s obviously canon.
