If Uncle Iroh was a strict mentor, then I feel like he would slowly develop a soft side as the time being. Kinda like Jeong-Jeong but yeah he's still a strict guy.

Nice take but I don’t think so. Zuko was rough around the edges and has Iroh as an opposite teaching him important values that he drew on to change himself later on in the series. For Jeong-Jeong, who was also rough, he had team avatar to show him a softer side. If Iroh was also rough along with Zuko, then there wouldnt be that opposite side thats showing them another way of living and treating others-> just like how Azula only had Ozai to look to for guidance and look how she turned out :( Another side to it is it would take away from Zuko’s transformation if he Iroh was also changing with him. Just my hot take :p

Uncle Iroh seriously ended up being the best character in the entire show. And it’s actually pretty rare to see any story featuring an uncle. I’m an aunt now-I was young when this show came out originally-and now I kinda relate to Uncle Iroh. I love my niece and nephew and would protect them too. But, I think there’s more stories featuring loving aunts than uncles. So that’s why this story just stands out. And so glad to see.

Cinema Therapy here on YT did an episode all about Iroh, and they made what I thought was an excellent point about this line. It wasn’t just literal; “following Iroh’s scent” was another way of Zuko saying “I’m now following the path/example you set for me.” Which emphasized just how much of an impact Iroh had on his nephew’s life and ultimately his redemption.
