Total War is a unique series in strategy gaming and video gaming in general. But how did the series get to where it's at today? And which Total War games exist? There's been many, and in this video, I wanted to showcase them all, at least every main Total War game and their expansions packs on PC.
I've tried to not only give an overview of each game, but also give my own personal opinion on each game, including highs and lows, innovations, and setbacks. I hope you find my personal commentary interesting, and if there's anything I've said that's wrong or something I've missed, then please let me know in the comment section. I've used Gamespot's original "history of total war" video as inspiration and source of certain pieces of information, but of course, added a whole lot myself. Thanks for watching, and if you enjoyed the video, and I hope you'll leave a like and a comment. And I'll see you next time! Cheers, guys.
PS: I realize I made a mistake saying Empire: Total War didn't have agent videos, but it did. My bad!
PS2: Looks like Warhammer III releases in 2022 now....

For the next historical Total War game, i would love to see a Medieval 3, but preferablya a realy good Empire 2. If Medieval 3 they need to update the way campaign and battlemaps meet. Take knights and armies for example. They shouldnt be Units you buy for Money in most cases, but rather units that you foster through the realms internal relationship with its people and nobility.

I really hope they make siege battle cool again. Empire suck so hard for attacking or defending forts/cities. It was just a mass infantry Rush on all sides. Invader walks on your land and attacks. Never a chance to get an actual army there in time because almost every troop can just throw up a grappling hook but somehow walking army up a wall and still fight back. No one or two turns to build siege equipment. To even have a chance to get reinforcements there.

What I miss most in the recent games is city zoom. The graphics are so much better than in the beginning, but you have hardly time to admire the cities while fighting a siege. In the first Rome game you could actually have a look at your cities that you were building.

This is one of the best series, I am a bit older and I remember when Shogun launched. It was stunning in that it was one of the first RTS titles ion which if you lost a battle you did not get a "Game Over" screen. And a few favourites of mine in the series: Medieval 2, Shogun 2 and the teo Warhammer games are superb RTS/TBT games. great video, thank for the recap!

Remember, Total War has not been completely unchallenged. Mark of Chaos was one game that was somewhat relateable to Total War in a sense of battles. However, it felt clunky and overall Total War just won the day. It is hard to compete with the big set stages, just look at FIFA, NHL and Total War. I do wish that there would be more pushing for greatness than there is by competition, but hey - What can you do.

After i watched the Video i saw the amount of views and i was shocked that it didnt have more. This was a really good rundown of the series. Rome 1 blew my kid brain at the time and Medieval 2 is probably my most played game of all time but i dont know since there was no way of tracking hours played back in the day. But i dont play vanilla today, because i feel like Stainless Steel does everything that vanilla does, but better. I bought a new PC just so i could play Empire when it came out and i went back to medieval 2 pretty much right after. After that i wasnt a big Fan of any other Total War for quite some time, and i own most of them. I definitely enjoyed Shogun 2 but it grew stale for me pretty quick with every faction fielding the same units. I also never really got into Fall of the Samurai, i just felt like the battles were way too quick with everything dying so fast. Rome 2 was a massive letdown, and even today after being patched up pretty well, it is still outclassed by classic Rome mods like Europa Barbarorum or Roma Surrectum. In Attila i had the most fun just fielding whole cavalry armies and crushing all spearman armies because cav was so broken in this game. But i dont like the time period and the AI consistently looses all provinces as Rome before Attila is even born so yeah... Also i know that this happens in every total war, but the cheats the AI gets in campaign were at their most noticeable in Attila. I remember settling in southern Italy as Alans in a campaign, having that and sicily and parts of northern Africa and being barely able to maintain 1 1/2 stacks, while being constantly being harassed by some tribe that settled on sardinia with one settlement, who maintained 3 full stacks at all times on the island. Also the "feature" that better and more expensive units replace your older units was incredibly shit. I bought Warhammer 1 and 2 together and i gotta say that the mortal Empires Campaign is great. At this point there is no debate that if you own all dlc for Warhammer 1 and 2, it is by far the most diverse, complex and largest total war to date, with all factions having their own identity. But the problem is, you gotta have the dlc and 2 games to get the full experience which leaves you at a 200€ price tag. And with Warhammer 3 and its dlc this will get even larger. The Addition of Magic, Monsters and flying units works well but the overall balance of the game is pretty bad with melee infantry basically being useless in the campaign and Monsters, missiles and magic ruling supreme. If you want to be the most efficient in campaign, which you have to be on higher difficulties, you will have to win battles with your flying mage alone, which is unbelievably boring. I know these kind of AI exploiting for efficiency was also possible in Medieval 2 and Rome 1, but it has never been as ridicolous as in Warhammer. In most cases you are sabotaging yourself if you build a balanced army like you would do in classic total wars and this irritates me as it breaks the immersion. I always dreamed of a Total war like rome or medieval that includes the whole world map, with many distinct cultures. Modders could never make this as the engines of Medieval 2 and Rome only allowed a certain map size, which turned any attempt at a World Map into an eye cancer inducingly squished mess. With Warhammer 1 2 and 3 they are doing it now, but in a fantasy world. If they can only realize such a massive project over the course of 5 years, several games with dlc and a 300€ Price tag, then so be it. But i really hope they make it happen. I want to expand the holy roman empire up to the malacca strait.

Thank you so much for watching and leaving such a long comment! You clearly have a long history with this franchise as well. I agree - it would be so awesome to have a historical war “Saga” where more and more of the world was added on over time, at least a large portion of it. There’s so much diversity and room for uniqueness in actual history, and it’s very possible to make historical factions highly unique - they proved that with Troy. But for now I’m just excited for the next actual historical release :)

This might be the story of my childhood. I'm from Venezuela and I used to travel to the UK over the summer to visit my family. My first time there my mom bought me Rome Total War and the Medieval Kingdoms expansion (We didn't even know that wasn't the base game ) at the GAME store in Colchester. As soon as we got to my uncle's house I installed the game and I was blown away. The next day we were back at GAME buying the original Medieval Total War 2. Then every summer I went to the UK with the expectation of getting my hands on a new Total War game or expansion ( I still have the original boxes in my drawer ) in 2012 I got Empire and in 2014 Rome Total War 2. Then at some point around 2013-5 my PC wasn't strong enough to handle the newer games and the Medieval 2 and Rome DVD's had become so degraded I couldn't install them anymore. Imagine my surprise when I realized I could use the pre Steam activation codes to redeem the games on Steam. I even used the original games to simulate battles for my High School's model UN Rome committee ( It was the Attila expansion). Then on my first job I bought a proper gaming PC in 2018 and I bought every single Total War I didn't already own. If I ever go back to the UK I need to visit that store. It was the place where I was introduced to Total War and the Paradox franchises. I might even shed a little tear if I'm honest.

I started off playing Medieval: Total War. But I really delved deep into Rome: Total War, which I still play today. Pretty much every game up to Rome 2: Total War is a completely different game. No longer was the game focused on settlements in an entirety as well as tactical battles, but simply, “what unit is stronger?” Such a shame. Just like the majority of games and publishers/companies that have been around for so long, the dedication to making something unique falters. Perfect example, Rome: ReSlaughtered.

I think a "Total War" set from the Paleolithic to the Neolithic would be awesome. You have an ethnic band and travel on the 3 sets of maps, a world map where you slowly relocate to new regions, a "city map" where you learn to adapt skills and new locals (and eventually if you start to build permanent settlements the turn into normal "Total War" style towns. and finally, the "battle map" would be used for both hunting and combat with other humans (and hominids like Neanderthals and Homo-Erect) family tree would be integrated, diplomatic system to deal with other bands civilizations, a "tech tree" that involves both adapting to new environments as well as advancing technology in a linear fashion. Hunting mechanic involves using strategy to hunt Mammoths, wild ox, elephants, as well as large carnivores that will attack if encountered. Combat with other humans/hominids can involve close range ambushes, long range spear throwing, pitched battles or single combat. Diplomacy can involve, trade, mate exchanging, co-operation, subordinating (becoming a permanent client) as well as exchanging knowledge. over time resources will deplete forcing regular nomadism and either you must defend your territory from outsiders, or you can simply search for territory in new lands. Basic "world map" should include Africa, and Eurasia as well as Australia and even the New World- but to colonize lands new technology must be developed such as cold weather clothing, boats, as well as new hunting/survival techniques. Victory conditions could vary but building a civilization with permanent dwellings, agriculture and ultimately inventing writing would be nice.

Rome: Total War, the only game of the series I tried, was absolutely fantastic. I spent at least 2.000 hours playing it. Later I installed Medieval: Total War, but some of the controls didn't work (didn't respond), so I couldn't play the game.

The video is great, I really appreciate your content! The only part I disagree with is when you say "Total war is the only strategy game that manages the dual system of campaign map and separate battles". Xcom and Age of Wonders do that as well

Bridge taking already existed in Shogun 1, and each province had a specific map. Also the crusade and POW/ransom mechanics were introduced in Medieval 1, it didn't wait Med 2.

I find a new TW a tough sell at launch. They’re usually broken at launch, for a few months anyways. But it isn’t that. We have such a variety of theatres that they must find it hard keeping it fresh, I personally look at all my options and wonder why I’d ever need another🤷🏻‍♂️🛸

It’s definitely aged, but it still retains major features that have been changed later - like the city building role playing, crusades, forts, general speeches, road building, etc. Definitely would love a new and upgraded one though.

I'm actually ok with having a remastered Medieval 2 Total War or a Medieval 3 with the same mechanics as MTW 2, but with a graphical update and a bigger map. I really want a map that stretches from the Americas to China. One reason why I love Warhammer 3 Immortal Empire's is because its the only total war game that allows me to play the HRE and invade China.

I can see why people would love to see a Medieval 3 or an Empire 2 as the next historic game. But I think that before going into a game which covers once again the whole of the High and Late Middle Ages, I would prefer to see a game first that covers the time in between Medieval and Empire, like a Total War: Renaissance. This could cover the 15th and 16th centuries and allow the player during the game to discover and conquer new continents after starting out on the usual Europe, Near East, Northern Africa based map.

I still miss having my Joms Vikings march on unsuspecting foes. Medieval 3, Empire 2... I'm looking forward to what comes next, but I'm never buying a game when it first comes out again. Too many bugs in Rome 2 and 3 Kingdoms to pay full price for them. Troy was a good price, signed up to Epic for that, will probably give it a go next year. I really hope they open up the modding in the future. Some of the mods, in the old days, were terrific, and even I modded Rome to some extent. (And Medieval I, but my cannon ball throwing uberman was more a joke than serious attempt to improve the game)

Having read the books, and being a fan of the Koei games, I was very excited for the Three Kingdoms. It does a decent job of capturing the feel, and I like that factions play very differently. But the super-hero generals rolling armies on their own, in a historical setting... that wore out the game quite quickly for me.

Grew up in early 2000s, my first encounter with Rome TW was a mindblowing experience. Then came Medieval 2, a big improvement to Rome, the speech is hilarious though. Then came Empire, the new mechanic is kinda rich, but I somehow lost the hype. Napoleon was more polished but it feels a bit arcade-ish. Not long after that we got the legendary Shogun 2 & FOTS. I got mindblown once again. The battle is still the best even for today's standard. Rome II was great but I prolly played too many games so it wasn't impress me that much. I gave up TW after Warhammer (which I totally clueless of the theme). Three Kingdoms came and it was awesome but I didn't spent as much time the way I did with Rome & Medieval 2. Shogun 2 has the best, smoothest engine and very convenient. But still, Rome 1 & Medieval 2 are my personal favorites.

I think it's a cool overview, but I have a totally reversed opinion of Medieval 2 & Empire. I watched people play Medieval 2 after having started myself with Rome 1, but never felt like Medieval 2 was worth playing over Rome at all. Then Empire came along & it became my most played title in the series. While things like reduced modability are true, the game becomes a charm with Darthmod which fixes many of the problems mentioned & not mentioned here. New systems like RTS naval battles (which is the third field after turn-based strategy & RTS land battles) or the scale of the world map were what I wanted to happen next after Rome 1. That said Empire also didn't do many of the things that would make me stop continuing the series after Shogun 2 with faction DLCs, less to no unit variety between factions in Shogun 2, even less modability then the turn away from historical titles. The only place where everybody can agree is that Creative Assembly tried to bite off more than they can chew in Empire, which is noticable by all the cut content findable in the files & sometimes visible ingame by proxy.
