Did you know there are fake houses in London? At first glance, they look like ordinary homes, but take a closer look - the windows are blocked out, and the truth lies behind these false facades.
Houses 23 and 24 on this street aren’t real.
Back in the 1860s, during the construction of the Metropolitan Line, these houses were demolished. To maintain the street’s appearance, facades were built to cover this section of the tube line.
In those days, underground trains were powered by coal and steam, and they needed to vent their emissions into the open air. These fake houses allowed for that ventilation.
Today, trains still run along these tracks, now part of the Circle and District lines.
And if this facade looks familiar, you might recognize it from an episode of Sherlock Holmes - just another mystery hidden in plain sight.
