I can’t say for sure, but I think some games music gets destroyed by the clock speed of the game. I assume that’s the case when you play those early nes games and the music is just like something cutting your ears and brain. I don’t think that’s intentional.

Amagon seems to have a mystical power where, as soon as you stop playing it, you forget about its insane amount of horseshit and only remember "funny chin guy with gun turns into Altered Beast uppercut man" I am guilty of this too, every time I revisit it I think "wow this is GARBAGE" and then later I'm going "hey Amagon is pretty cool"

@BudanielАй бұрын
I loved the falling-down-the-stairs animation in Alien 3, and Silent Assault must have the most pink sprites of any NES game not named on Kirby or Barbie. It heavy reliance on cyan and pink/magenta gives it a real CGA/EGA look.

Given the way the xenomorph is depicted in the movies as persistent and intelligent and lethal it's crazy how every single Alien video game until Isolation chooses to depict them as easily dispatched cannon fodder. You'd really have thought someone would have gone "what if we make it scary like movie alien and see if that's not a much better kind of game" at some point between 1982 and 2014

When I was like 10 or 11, I BEGGED one of my aunts to buy Dash Galaxy in the Alien Asylum brand new. Boy was it the worst video game purchase ever. That said, because it was one of the 10 or 12 NES games I had as a kid, I played the ever-living shit out of it. I could never get past floor 5 trying to beat each of the levels. No idea how many levels there are and how many keys you need to beat it. Never could sit through enough of it to actually beat it.
@furrymessiahАй бұрын
There are 120(!) levels in that god forsaken game. I had it too, and likewise never finished it. Apparently if you are psychotic enough to speedrun it, you can finish it in about ten minutes.

Growing up, my dad had a very limited NES collection but the top 3 among them all for my friends and I were Castlevania 3, TMNT, and Amagon. So, deep down I have a massive love for Amagon as I played a ton of it with my Dad and friends but it is not a good game. It's a shame because with a few tweaks like unlimited ammo, a health bar and slightly better jumping you'd have a solid little game.

As a kid who owned Uncanny X-Men, I, too, would absolutely suggest someone play Silent Assault over it. At least you and a room of people can look at SA and agree on enemies in the game like "Jet Pack Guys" or "Mime". As kids, we had to squint at the screen and talk each other into whether we were fighting the Juggernaut or White Queen and it didn't really matter cause you couldn't control anything anyway.

Finally Dash Galaxy! A terrible game I played way too much of because it's what we had. Growing up I just thought video games sucked, but it was just that the games we had where trash because that is what my parents could afford, bargain bin things no one wanted. I never owned Zelda, Contra, Mario, or Metroid. But I sure as hell played alot of Dash Galaxy, Yo-Noid, Back to the future, and karate kid. Thanks for the nostalgia, and keep up the science!

The Genesis and SNES versions of 'Alien³' (different games) are great. NES...not so much. Probe also did the halfway decent 'Judge Dredd' movie game on 16bit consoles. Side note: 'Alien: Infestation' on DS developed by WayForward was pretty rad, wish SEGA would remaster that for the Switch.
@schtive81Ай бұрын
I remember seeing that Beetlejuice game advertised in gaming magazines, but I never played it. The gameplay reminds me of 'Haunting starring Poleterguy' on the Genesis. This is also the second game that Michael Keaton is technically in, the other being Batman. NES Lethal Weapon is pretty middling. But it has a nice soundtrack. That Aliens game is a lesser port of the Genesis game. But this version ended up on various microcomputers too. The SNES game was more of a Metroid-like.

Without naming them, how many formative NES games of your childhood (good or bad) has Jeff ranked so far? For me, he ranked 6 out of 13 of the game cartridges I owned, which statistically makes perfect sense as he just said we're around the halfway point. The lowest ranked game I owned at this point is #233 (which was actually one of my favorites as a kid).

If the instead of trying to jam 52 games on one cart, the active enterprises instead focused on one set of shooter mechanics, and used all that art to just make 52 levels, I think you'd get something comparable to Silent Assault, and it would've certainly been better than Cheetahmen.
