Yes in the manual it explains that the overworld map icons are just symbolic and what is actually there is what you see when they cut to the horizontal view. This implies the world is huge. So for example when you see an icon of an enemy on the overworld map, it symbolizes a whole horde of them moving around. And when you think about it, the overworld map shows just a few tiles beyond where many cave openings are located, but the caves often have several horizontal screens to them when you enter.

Funny thing about the town named Mido in Adventure of Link and the name not corresponding to a sage in Ocarina of Time, in the version of Ocarina of Time that was shown at Spaceworld, the medallions were called the Sage's Seals (the Fire Medaillion was called Darunia's Seal for example). The item that would go on to be called the Shadow Medallion was called Mido's Seal.

@@SECONDQUEST In that build of the game the Sage's Seals also had item equivalents called Medals, with names corresponding to their element, and in turn the element of the dungeon and Sage they were from. The item equivalent of Darunia's Seal was the Fire Medal, Saria's Seal was the Wind Medal, Ruto's Seal was the Ice Medal, and so on. They were used to cast magic like the medallions from A Link to the Past on their own, but they also had a secondary function where equipping them to the c-button that already had the bow on it would combine the two to create various elemental arrows. I've always assumed the 'x awakens as a sage and adds their power to yours' was an artifact of this build, especially considering it isn't the only instance of in-game text I can think of that would fit more with that build than what we got. In the cutscene where you get the Light Medallion, Raura says 'when the power of all the Sages is awakened, the Sages' Seals will contain all the evil power in the void of the realm'. Anyway, the main reason I brought up the Medals is that the item equivalent of Mido's Seal was called the Dark Medal. So the dungeon he was associated with was probably going to be called the Dark Temple of the Temple of Darkness.

In Z1, gettting hit by a white bubble (temporary loss of sword use) is on an internal timer. If you get hit, and blow the flute, that'll be enough time to use your sword again. Basically a pause to let you sword come back.

The original game’s level one locked door thing is actually a glitch. The way the game knows to keep an unlocked door open is if you went through it, or in other words, which side of the screen you walked off. Because you walked off the bottom of the screen to leave the level, when you load back into the level, the game says, “hey, you walked off the bottom side, so the top door should be open”

@@Bashfulday I play the randomizer of Z1 pretty consistently, and you abuse this glitch constantly. If you enter a level, and there's a bomb wall, if you exit the level, go in and out of the side the bomb wall is, and enter the level, the bomb wall will be open without using a bomb. Not very useful for base game, but a neat feature.

Good video! One correction for you. The grave heart container in 2nd quest Zelda 1 doesn't require the power bracelet. You can push it at any time. Also, you should do a similar style video for the exploitable glitches in these 2 games. A lot of people are just learning about block clipping, screen scrolls, fairy clipping, etc. I think it would be a good introductory style of video for a lot of the people getting familiar with seeing or using the glitches. I love seeing people NOT in their 40's and 50's getting in to the NES era! Lol

And in the 2nd quest, if a bubble takes away your sword permanently, you don't need a bubble with that other color, you can but you don't need to. Because you can leave for the overworld and go to any fairy that will give you the sword attack back. I'm 99% sure that I remember it right. What's best depends on where you are in a dungeon and how close it is to a fairy. Another important thing is the fluit. It's never random which dungeon it brings you to. It depends on how many times you blow the whistle and which direction. Plus which dungeon you visited the latest. Something like that. So my advive is to practice this. Point down and blow the whistle and repeat it after every warp. Then do it when Link is pointing up. Also same thing when pointting left or right. Practice this is the best way to learn it. Next important thing is that "the 10th enemy got a bomb", this is a fact in Level 8 in 1st Quest. So kill 9 enemies with the sword (maybe boomerang and other weapons will work as well) and then kill the 10th enemy with a bomb and you will force a bomb drop. Important is that you cannot take any damage while doing this. When you take damage the "kill counter" will get reset. And then you need to start over. It's useful! In Zelda 2, there's a very useful tip in the overworld, especially when you're walking to the great palace. There's some mandatory encounters that you can skip with some easier versions if you walk into the overworld enemies/fairies at the same spot as the mandatory encounter, with a good enough timing. In Zelda 2 there's also something about every 6th or 8th enemy that will drop magic. Or 10th. Hard to remember. Useful in some areas in some palaces. I'm pretty sure about this. For beginners in Zelda 2, before entering palace 1 you can walk down instead on that desert and leave that and walk down more, and pick up a heart container. Then walk up to palace 1 with more life. This is really good!

Nice video! One thing that might be worth a mention is, in Zelda 2, if you jump above the screen (using the Jump spell while on a high roof or something), and cast Fairy while you're off screen, it makes the game freak out. You end up in weird towns, or pallette-swapped dungeons, and leaving takes you to random places. Once back in the day, I left a glitched town and emerged way off in the ocean somewhere.

@@Bashfulday Indeed, this trick is most easily done in any of the Palaces that have falling block rooms. You'd have to have the Handy Glove item from the swamp palace in order to "dig" a way to the top. In the town of Darunia, you can use the Jump spell and use the Fairy spell while on top of the tallest building in town. However, this has some weird side effects if you're not careful. One is getting soft-locked out in the ocean sometimes. Another is that you can accidentally turn palaces that you haven't been to yet into rock... which can end up forever locking you out of The Great Palace at the end of the game, or prevent you from collecting all the necessary items that will be needed to get there.

As someone who has been playing these games almost since the day they came out, I figured there was no way I was going to hear something I didn't know. Nicely done, you proved me wrong! 😁 I had not heard of talking to a fairy before you Up+A save to start with full health next time. Something else with the faries if you are going to recover more than about 4 hearts hit Select right as your hearts start to fill. The screen will pause but your hearts continue to refill. Once they refill the screen unpauses and as soon as the heart ring completes it disappears, letting you leave right away rather than standing there while the heart ring circles around you for a few seconds. In AoL a number of map tiles have fights that are triggered when you step on them (i.e. the path to Darunia). These fights are typically more difficult than the fights from colliding with the roaming monsters. If you can time it so you step on the tile at the same time you collide with a monster you'll get the easier monster fight and bypass the "scripted" one. Thanks for the entertaining video!! Looking forward to more!! 😄

Atlantis no Nazo (NES = Super Pitfall II) - get the microphone power-up and then yell into the microphone to freeze and kill most enemies. Hikari Shinwa: Palutena no Kagami (NES = Kid Icarus) - talk into the microphone to bargain for lower shop prices. Raid on Bungeling Bay (NES = Raid on Bungeling Bay) - ? SD Kamen Rider -- in one of the mini games, blow air into the microphone to get a windmill to spin. Takeshi no Chousenjou - featuring Takeshi Kitano who starred in Zatoichi, Battle Royale, Violent Cop, etc.) Kitano hates videogames and wanted this game to show its players how futile and pointless their hobby was. Amongst the challenges included in the game were a section where the player must hold a single button for up to an hour, a boss that takes over 1,000 punches to kill and of course the microphone section, where players are required to sing a verse of karaoke or talk whilst playing a pachislo minigame. The microphone section was replaced in later versions of the game once the microphone was dropped from the Famicom. Zelda no Densetsu: The Hyrule Fantasy (cart/disk) (NES = The Legend of Zelda) - yell into the microphone to kill Pols Voice enemies.

@@KairuHakubi That's an understandable mistake. If you don’t mind me geeking out on language a bit, read on. I’m going to guess by your error, which is a familiar one for me, that you must come from a place that uses rhotic Rs (think: pirate r). It's different now, but the Japanese language was more influenced by British English (non-rhotic) early on, rather than gloriously rhoticized American English. Think of how a Brit is likely to say "error", and you can see where the Japanese are getting that pronunciation. Also, you already know about the Japanese flap R that can create difficulty, so it makes sense that the Japanese would prefer to clip that terminal R trouble when they have a good reason. @@Bashfulday - Hmmm, I just tried it in-game from a fresh (second quest) file, and it didn't do what I expected. Does it grant max health containers or just function as a heal-save warp combo?

It should if done correctly grant your current heart containers full plus and a save, I did however one time get an extra heart or two from doing it like that. Maybe it’s a statistical thing, maybe it occasionally does give hearts?

as far as "favorite secrets" go, im not sure if i even have one...but the 'first to mind' is that the Warp Whistle tune from Zelda-I not only returns as the Warp Sound in SuperMarioBros3, but it gets 'extended' into a full melody on Zelda-OoT's "Press Start" screen... ...that, or how most games in the series have some sort of reference to the first game's dialogue, even as recent as BotW/TotK, where you can find the [Zelda-I] Sword (as in, its just called 'Sword') with the item description saying something like "take this when going alone would be otherwise dangerous"... actually, check that-- i just thought of my 'favorite secret', and its from OoT-- didja know theres a brief window (after collecting the Three Stones but before pulling the Master Sword) where Child-Link can watch a Hyrule Castle Soldier fucking die?? he was wounded during Ganondorf's attempt at attacking the Castle (yknow, why he was chasing Zelda/Impa in that cutscene you just watched at the moat) and as the last few letters of his textbox type out, he stretches an arm out, shaking, before falling limp...trying to A-Speak to him afterward just has Navi tell you "He's not moving anymore..."

Here's an easter egg you forgotten in Zelda 2. You don't have to put the crystal in when you beat the boss of the temple. If you jump over it, you can exit the temple. Then when you beat all 6 temples and max out your attack, life, and magic to 8, you can go back to each temple and put in the crystal. Each time, you'll get an 1-up. That's 6 extra Links that you use to get to and through the final temple.

Here is an Easter Egg for you for Gameboy Color Legend of the River King 2 English Version. Take the game and run it through the Gameboy MOM Analyzer on PC and change the cartridge type to 1EH from the selection. Then fix the header afterwards until it is correct. This will enable Rumble that was programmed into the Japanese version and just needs to be opened on the English Version. It's way better with Rumble thanks to the original programmers and myself. Catching fish and battles are way more fun. Oops that first M in MOM was supposed to be an R. My bad. This works with the Epilogue GB Operator set to Rumble even if your Geek Tech Premium FRAM Cartridge doesn't have a motor. You could just use mGBA and skip that though. Also works on the Pow Kiddy V90 with the Pocket Go Firmware Update to support Gameboy Color Rumble. It has a motor inside.

The blue to red potion thing doesn’t save rupees in the long run. If you are going to use one and then go and replenish with a blue, it will cost you 40 rupees each time you do that. By the second time you’ll have spent 80 rupees. If you just used both your servings and replenished with a red, it only costs you 68. I’d only do the blue upgrade for 40 if you were heading into level 9 with a blue potion.
@Bashfulday

I usually don’t need the potions, but I get a blue one and if I have to have it I just go refill it before the next level! Especially for the last few levels, but you are right the math doesn’t stand very well if you constantly refill the bottle!

I highly recommend the Redux rom hacks for the first two Zelda games instead of playing the plain vanilla version. They improve upon the original games in many ways that make them more enjoyable. It's like an updated version of the games. Even removing some of the issues you mentioned in the video such as being able to manual save with controller 1, and no flashy screen when dying in Zelda II. There's also Redux hacks for A Link to the Past and Link's Awakening that are also much better ways to play them. There's also a PC version of Zelda II which is also fantastic to play and adds a few new areas that are a nice surprise. Overall, I wouldn't recommend touching the original versions.
