Maybe. But Playboy wasn't just a sex magazine, they had really intelligent articles written throughout. Really thought provoking pieces on politics during the time. I was really surprised I'm only 23 and when I was 19 I found a playboy from 83 in this old dudes garage that I was helping clear out and he let me keep it. I thought it was cool like "oh crap, vintage p*rn!!!" But then I started to read it and God damn did they have some amazing journalism throughout it.

In the early 1960's abortion AND birth control were illegal in many jurisdictions, as was homosexuality, Jim Crow laws remained in force in many states, and comedians were being arrested for saying things in nightclubs that are today commomplace on tv. Heffner, like him or not, put his money where his mouth was in support of people fighting for their rights. This is what Maher is talking about.

Bill Maher wouldn't know any of this 1st hand because he's only 66 yrs old, born Jan 6, 1956. Hefner started "Playboy" in 1952. Maher's first encounters with Hugh would have, at the earliest been at 18 (1974) which he was just beginning his career in "cheesy" clubs (he wasn't famous AT ALL at that time). More likely, he first met Hugh in the 1980's (mid to late). Where Hefner's Convo with Maher likely began his history lessons.
