Did you know the costumes in The Wizard of Oz were dangerous?
The Tin Man’s costume was made of aluminum, and he was painted with aluminum paste, which gave him lasting breathing problems. The Cowardly Lion’s costume was made from real lion fur, weighing 90 pounds, and he often overheated on set. The Wicked Witch’s makeup was toxic because it was copper based, and it caused third degree burns when a stunt went wrong.

The Tin Man’s liquid makeup doesn’t give one asthma. You’re mixing Jack Haley with Buddy Ebsen. In the early stages of film development, Buddy Ebsen was chosen over Ray Bolger to portray the Scarecrow, who was originally cast as the Tin Man (understandable considering how more energetic Bolger was playing the Scarecrow). Eventually, Bolger swapped roles with Ebsen, but the one issue was the makeup used to cast Ebsen’s face in “metal” was mixed with aluminum powder. Eventually, the particles of the makeup got into his lungs and he had to be taken to the hospital. Jack Haley was assigned to take over as the Tin Man, and the rest is Oz-story.

Buddy Epsen was first picked for the Tinman role. But they used aluminum powder on his face. It got in his lungs. He was hospitalized for a few weeks. But there's was no lasting breathing problems. Buddy opted out and Jack Haley played the role for the movie. They used aluminum paste which solved the problem. He didn't suffer anything but a minor eye infection one time. So the way this clip presents the story is a tad bit misleading.

The witch’s makeup didn’t cause third degree burns, the fire that shot up around her did, when the trap door was delayed to avoid it being seen in the shot. The makeup exacerbated the injury just like anything would that’s on skin when it’s burned. And it wasn’t Jack Haley who had breathing problems from the makeup, it was Buddy Ebsen, best known as Jed Clampett, the original Tin Woodsman, whose makeup was made from aluminum POWDER. They switched to the paste for Jack Haley (his replacement) after Ebsen was hospitalized. The paste DID give him an eye infection though. But I guess facts aren’t as important as getting clicks and views.
@MaskedMan66
@MaskedMan66 9 ай бұрын
It wasn't a trap door, it was an elevator, and it worked perfectly; it was the flames that went up too soon. Haley's eye infection cleared up in four days. But it's great top see someone else who actually looks into the facts! Thank you! :-)

The suit gave him breathing problems because it contained silver dust, silver dust acts like asbestos where inhaling it causes damage to the lungs by creating microfissures in the lung tissue due to the heavy metal's properties as a fine dust. It causes damage similar to inhaling asbestos, but it happens more quickly, as asbestos is only a fiber, silver is a heavy metal.

The Tin Woodman's costume was made of buckram covered with leather. Far less hazardous than armor worn by knights, or indeed actors who play knights. Jack Haley had no lasting problems of any kind from his make-up. Bert Lahr's costume was made of lion *pelt,* not just fur, and it weighed 70 pounds. But guess what? Actors have had to wear hot, heavy, uncomfortable costumes for as long as there's been a profession called acting. Not only that, but we humans have worn animal skins for all of our history. :-) Miss Hamilton's make-up was not toxic, and it didn't burn her. *Fire* burned her.

One glaring untruth in this video is that it actually was a planned fire scene and a trap door set malfunction that was supposed to open, and didn't, that caused the burns, not the make up. Kind of like sticking your head into a lit torch, and blaming your hairspray for starting a fire in your hair. It also happened to Margeret Hamilton's stunt double. Fortunitely the problem was fixed. Don't believe everything you see on the internet is true, kiddies. 😊

Dont forget that the Scarecrow and Wicked Witch's costumes also incorporated asbestosis, which helped contribute to the actresses third-degree burns. Also, the snow in the poppy field was all asbestos when they released it onto the actors.
@MaskedMan66
@MaskedMan66 5 ай бұрын
No, they did not. If Miss Hamilton's costume had been made of asbestos, *it would not have caught fire.* As for Bolger, the only time he had any asbestos on his person was when he had a sheathe of it under his sleeve for the scene in which the WWW set fire to the Scarecrow's arm. The snow was gypsum.

@AlezanderNX You're welcome! Yeah, you have to be very careful when you hear reports about this movie. There are a lot of lies, especially concerning Judy Garland.
@MaskedMan66
@MaskedMan66 2 ай бұрын
@AlezanderNX No, Miss Hamilton's face and right hand got burned on about the fourth take of her exit from the Munchkin City. They got the make-up off of her before it could catch fire, and the studio doctor put salve and bandages on her. It was her stunt double Betty Danko whose left leg got a mother of a wound around it when a broom rig they were trying out exploded. But she'd had worse injuries in her career; some years before, she almost had her left foot bitten off by a mountain lion. The history of the movie isn't really murky at all; along with the book I cited, there are also two others that shed very bright light on everything: "The Making of The Wizard of Oz" (1977) by Aljean Harmetz with an introduction by Margaret Hamilton, "The Wizard of Oz: The Official 50th Anniversary Pictorial History" (1989) by John Fricke, Jay Scarfone, and William Stillman with an introduction by Jack Haley, Jr.

@AlezanderNX Ah, okay. I got you. Yeah, there are so many bogus stories. I mean, if half of the stuff that say happened to Judy was true, she would have been dead by the time it was finished, and they'd have dedicated the movie to her memory.
