Did You Lock Your Keys in the Trunk? Maybe Not...

So did you lock your keys in the trunk? Maybe not! Driver's inadvertently leave their keys in the trunks or rear storage areas of their push button start vehicles while the vehicle is still locked and then assume that the keys are locked away. But this is rarely the case and we'll demonstrate why in this video.

You saved my life. Lexus roadside was going to send a tow truck to take my car to a Lexus Dealership. When I called the dealer to see how much it was going to cost me, they said there was nothing they could do, I had to get a locksmith. So I figured to check youtube and BINGO!! I found your vid. Thank you! Thank you! ThNk you! I have a Passat 2017 the keys got locked in the trunk I call a locksmith to open the car so I could open the trunk from the door. Guess what? Doesn’t work that way, to lay back the seats you’ll need to access the trunk because the latch’s are there, I spender hours looking at KZbin, you were the only one with the answer for my problem. The alternative was tow my car to the dealer and pay for them to open. Awesome job!

True story. It was raining. I remote started my CTS, unlocked the trunk, threw my coat in the trunk with my keys in it and closed the trunk. 🤦🏻‍♂️ Of course the locksmith was enroute stating it would be $125 to unlock the car. Then I You Tubed my issue and up came your video. Sure enough, there was a rubber switch right about the plate, pressed it and voila. Thanks again.

This is not the case for the 2018 Volkswagen Atlas SUV. It will only detect the keyfob if its in the front or middle seat. It will not detect the keyfob if it's in the trunk area. My wife found out the hard way and left her keyfob in the trunk area and the trunk/gate would not open. Yes there is a rubbery push button under the handle, but the trunk/gate will not open.

My 2013 Toyota Axio beeps, I ignored the beep and closed the trunk directly on the key that I left in the well under the trunk lid. I panicked for a minute because I have no spare and had no one to call then, I remembered that the key can unlock the trunk and there is a secondary button on the trunk so with one desperate push and my heart rate sky high it worked.

So this is very confusing paragraph. You seem to have the key fob (second button) but the key is in the house or the car?? Regardless, look for a Power Door switch on the dashboard and turn it on. If I interpret your issue correctly,, it should solve the problem...

Well, assuming its push button start there should be. Unfortunately, we don't have access to owner's manuals to verify. In any case, it would be a soft rubber button under the lip of the trunk, although there's not a lot of room there. See if the VW emblem moves. It may swing away revealing a button. And please let us know!

It SHOULD work the same way. If you have NOT actually left the key fob in the trunk, you can test it by opening the trunk, taking the mechanical key out of the fob as back up, and dropping the fob inside the trunk. Then see if it will open. Most of them work, but not all. Toyota MAY refuse to let the trunk close, but we haven't tested one.

Sorry, there is no button at the trunk lid. The trunk only opens using the key fob or the button on the dash. You'll need a good locksmith to help...

As noted from the Jeep in the vid, it works MOST of the time, but not with all models. If it doesn't, you'll need a locksmith or the spare key! Way too many of us don't bother replacing lost spares!!!

There's nothing like this in the Civic. Newer ones have an emergency open just behind the top of the back seats behind a cover that needs to be pried off. Your release on the floor, however, can be locked with a key. Check to see if its become locked somehow.

Well, have to admit that there doesn't appear to be a release button on the trunk itself. If it won't simply pull open, you'll need a spare key to open it or the door to use the inside release. Otherwise, a locksmith can hopefully save the day...

Well, if its a key start vehicle, what is described in the video will not work. If it is in fact a keyless (push button) start vehicle, it should work. We found only one that did not (a Jeep Cherokee), but we did not test every vehicle. Also, if the key fob is at the very back of the trunk, it may be too far from the sensor.

I tried disconnect battery, jump start , remove fuse nothing worked , cannot get behind the seat there is steel construction and gas tank and no space to get to the trunk…

Ok, long story. Anyway, I'm guessing your car does not have the push button to start it. If so, the trunk would not have stayed closed with the key fob inside! Also, not in valet mode (doesn't have one) -- using the slim jim set off the security system and everything stayed locked. Get a GOOD locksmith who will likely drill out the key cylinder (left side) to open the trunk, but I admit I'm not sure it would work...

It absolutely should. The only caveat is the depth of the trunk. If the fob is left far enough back, it may not be recognized.

Only if it's push button start. If the keys are locked in the trunk, it sure won't hurt to try. If not, you can test by taking out the mechanical key (or keeping a spare key fob handy) and dropping the fob into the trunk...
