Just to give you a piece of information, the push start button feature was invented by German companies (Mercedes first then VW and BMW), I'm not bashing Ford or anything but they didn't "think" of the safety feature they just copied the whole Push button concept from the German cars whom engineers already though of the safety feature a decade ago. let my add something else to your database ;), in my VW if the "fly by wire" accelerator got stuck at full throttle all you need to do is brake, the car will detect that you're acceleration and braking for more than 1 sec and it will ignore the the accelerator and you'll brake normal to a stop, they though of this because it way better and more safe to stop the car while it still running because you will still have brake and steering assist.
@SebastianLong
@SebastianLong 8 жыл бұрын
abd bach Push button start is very old tech Mercedes didn't invent it, nor did VW or BMW. Any time there is a current to anything (in this case, ignition) a switch or button can be used. Aircraft have been using this technology since planes used gasoline engines. The car companies you stated just took it under their wing as a cost saving/marketing trick.

I agree, no one should even be allowed to get their driver's license without knowing how to turn their engine off while driving in case of emergency in the throttle sticks. There's millions and millions and millions of people who don't even know how to do this, there's a famous example of a family in a Toyota who all unnecessarily died because the format stuck on the gas pedal and they didn't know what to do so they called 911 from the car. Imagine if they were required by law to know how to turn the engine off they would all be alive

Mine went bad in my Mazda Tribute, "START" doesn't work. Very common problem. I solved that with a $5 button, $1 in wire, and $5 in scotchloks. And I paid too much. :D I don't know how expensive repairs are to cars with push to start. But I do know defeating an ignition cylinder costs pennies to do and dollars to usable.

Thanks for answering some questions. I noted that at 55, you pushed the button OFF, ON, OFF, ON and the engine kept running. What happens if you only pushed the button once at 55 and kept driving for a while, then slowed down to 5 mph or so? Would the engine then shut off? That could be a safety hazard if it does.

On some newer vehicles, it requires either a long press (like 2 seconds) or repeated presses (like 2 or 3 presses very quickly) to turn off the car while it's moving above a certain speed (like 5-10 mph or something). At least that is how it is in my 2020 Camry.

@Plur307
@Plur307 8 жыл бұрын
I would certainly hope that the steering doesn't lock. While rare, it is still possible to get the accelerator stuck on a modern car. People need to be able to turn off the engine but remain in control. Toyota had issues with stuck throttles only a few years ago and some of those cars had push button start. People panicked and didn't hold down the start button. They were unable to turn the car off because they were only pressing the button for a moment.

@Plur307

mason methot I remember reading stories that the brakes overheated and faded. But one of those stories was with a prius. I find it hard to believe a prius had enough power to melt the brakes. The brakes should be able to overpower the engine if you just stomp on the pedal. Probably an idiot behind the wheel.
@masonmethot3186
@masonmethot3186 8 жыл бұрын
Plur307 I've heard that brakes will always beat the engine (even more so on a Toyota :D) O would find it hard to believe the brakes would fade that quickly and fail. But you never know.
@Plur307

mason methot I think you need to keep in mind that it was a prius driver. They have probably never gone over 75 mph before or tried to brake as hard as they can. They were probably terrified.

If you're ever in a situation where the throttle gets stuck, just put the transmission in NEUTRAL. What's so hard about that? Once you get the car under control and stopped, then shut off the engine. Don't try to just turn off the engine while the car is still moving because you'll lose hydraulics and will have no power brakes. Also, if you have a regular ignition switch with a key, you might turn it too far and lock the steering wheel...then you'll REALLY be screwed.
@sethking3363
@sethking3363 7 жыл бұрын
If your accelerator is stuck and you put it in N, you'll be out an engine! I see it now 7rpm/8rpm/9rpm BOOM 💥 That'll be $2500 plus labor please. You can still drive with the engine off. It's hard to navigate through cones without PS but you can easily maneuver to the curb without PS. A lot of people don't know that you can turn it back one click and not lock the steering, or that you can turn it back to start without starting the engine, and that scares me. That one little area could mean the difference between life and death.

Did you actually check/confirm that it will respond like a normal key if you need to restart engine while moving? I.E Move transmission to neutral, restart engine, move transmission back into drive. Just wondering because you didn't mention starting the vehicle in neutral in the video. I know a lot of these cars with electronic start, and electronic transmissions give you the warning 'vehicle must be in park' if you try to start the engine with it out of park. I was just curious if it would actually even start in neutral (like a normal car would), or if these electronics limit you to only starting in park

Dat Sun Power steering is completely unnecessary when the car is rolling. The steering wheel might be a bit 'stiffer' but that's all. PS is mostly only 'needed' when the vehicle is moving at very low speeds, or to turn the wheel when the car is stopped (like preparing to leave the curb).

john smith When it's rolling? You're probably going to notice it, yes. But to the point of losing control of the car? Nah, not even close. Even without PS, I can still one-hand it to the side of the road without too much trouble. Hell, an old S10 I owned broke its serpentine belt on the freeway one night, and I didn't even know it until the temp gauge was in the red, probably five to ten minutes later. The truck was equipped with PS and I didn't even notice the difference until I slowed down below about 20 mph.

How so? The turns a switch and has an RF transponder just like the push button start ignition does. The physical key is a little less complicated when it comes to unlocking and locking of the doors but as far as ignition in modern cars there's really not much difference. My wife is slowly getting used to the keyless ignition system on her new car - she hated it at first but being able to keep the "key" in her purse has been a benefit a few times already. One thing is for sure it's a lot easier to grind the teeth on the the fly wheel with a physical key ignition system - if that's your thing ;-)

@Scotty_in_Ohio
@Scotty_in_Ohio 8 жыл бұрын
Dustin Hart - I get ya - many people think that the system is simpler (key and remote fob) but that's not the case in modern cars. In cars 5-10 years old with "newfangled" keyless systems I'd entirely agree those were unnecessarily complicated and could either be bypassed or weren't reliable - they're much better even a couple years ago. Can they be "hacked" yep - it takes some doing and it would be much easier to tow the car to steal it. If the concern is a physical key for a lock in case the battery goes dead or the fob stops working then most manufacturers include a physical key inside the fob to open the door and the fob can be placed in to a socket to start the car even if the battery on the fob is completely dead. I know I won't convince you - not really trying to - just some food for thought.

Thank you for posting this video! This is info that every push-button start car owner should know! In much the same way you shut-down a misbehaving computer - press and hold the "power button" and force a hard shutdown - so too, you can shut off a misbehaving automobile. Too bad the driver of the Lexus sedan (in August of 2009) didn't know this... As he and his family were traveling north-bound on Hwy.125 (in San Diego county, California), the throttle [apparently] stuck on the Lexus, and he ended up crashing off the end the highway. They traveled for a few miles as the car gained speed (120 mph at the time of the crash), and he was unable to regain control. Had he had the presence of mind (and knowledge) to press and hold the "start" button, the car would have likely shutdown, and he (and his family) would be alive today. During the 911 call, he was asked if he could turn off the car, but he never responded, and apparently the 911 operator did not know to tell him to press & hold the start button. He ended up crashing off the end of Highway 125, where it intersects a surface street, and he and all of the occupants were killed. This was the major incident (one of several that followed) that prompted Toyota's throttle-pedal recall. Your car is a computer. If it ain't behaving, press and hold the power button!

The keyless start is an invention I could've gone without. I've got a Honda Odyssey and the button is about 4-6 inches from the AC button and the stereo power button. I would've preferred it placed where the key ignition has always been, on the side of the steering column so that I don't accidentally hit it out of habit I built up over 25 years with previous cars.

I was sitting here thinking, not being able to turn it off could be dangerous. I've actually had my throttle stick before - Luckily I was in a manual trans car, I pressed the clutch to avoid hitting the car in front, then shut the car down to avoid engine damage, but this raises another question --- Will your steering lock once you've shut the car off? In my car with a key, I was able to simply put the key back into the on position after the engine had shut down, so that my wheel wouldn't lock.
@Chinesefoodrocks1521
@Chinesefoodrocks1521 8 жыл бұрын
Redslayer86 you should never shut the car down when the throttle sticks until you've stopped. If you turn the engine off you loose brakes, power steering and risk the steering wheel locking. Your engine can handle redline for 30 seconds. They're designed with a rev **limiter** for that very reason.
@Hans-gb4mv
@Hans-gb4mv 8 жыл бұрын
The rev limiter is still too high to sustain the RPM. In the manual of my car it even states that when I'm in cruise control I'm not allowed to press the gear shifter into neutral without pressing the clutch or it would result in engine damage within 3s. The only reason this would be in there is because the cruise control would immediately apply full throttle to make up for the loss in speed because it doesn't know the car is in neutral.
@EagleLogic
@EagleLogic 8 жыл бұрын
I don't think my car has a rev limiter. At least in gear. I drive a 2015 STI and recall one time where I did a "money shift" from 5th gear to 2nd gear, in an attempt to downshift to to 4th. The RPM's went 2.5K over the redline. Does a rev limiter only work in autos or do you have to be in neutral?
@Chinesefoodrocks1521
@Chinesefoodrocks1521 8 жыл бұрын
Yet again. It is called a LIMITER for a reason. It can handle it. They just put that bs in the manual so some dipshit doesn't ride in on a tow truck complaining his engine blew up because there was no over revving warning.

If I'm not mistaken, it is impossible to push start almost every automatic because the torque converter will allow the wheels to spin whithout turning the engine, it's for tha reason an automatic cannot stall, the engine turns the torque converter and at engine idle speeds it rotates without turning the wheels.

I think the electronics preventing you from push starting saves a lot of alternators. Seen so many blow their diodes when asked to charge a totally discharged battery after a push start. Best to bring up the battery a bit with another charged battery with a jumper cable.

Pierre Visconti Reading is hard, if put in neutral as stated above the rev limiter will keep the engine from any damage and you will still have power, yes you still have brakes however you greatly reduce stopping distance if the power is on. Also note that if engine is off the steering wheel lock may engage then you cannot steer the car either so please reevaluate your opninion.

Pierre Visconti Lets all just hope sudden acceleration doesnt happen to any of us, I have been fortunate enough to have never experienced it however I researched it diligently because of the toyota camry "sudden acceleration" hysteria of 2010 and I owned said vehicle. I too believed that shutting off the engine was better until I researched the benefits vs the adverse affects of such action and neutral was the preferred solution with limited if any consequences for such a resolution. Take care my friend and again I hope this is something none of us experience.

I have played around with that same function in my 2015 and my 2018 Ford Escapes. Yes, both of these DID shut down when holding the button in for 3-5 seconds at higher speeds. I know one problem with the Ford vehicles, not sure about all other vehicles, but the power steering ONLY works when the car is running AND the key is in the normal "RUN" mode. The steering will NOT function during Remote start function. It is an electric steering module and it VERY difficult to turn when the steering motor is not running. I didn't check that when the key was shut down while driving. Great video to share with everyone!

Interesting. I have a Citroen C4 Spacetourer auto/manual that is cleverly designed so you can't do anything that would harm the cars mechanisms. i.e. if you go into reverse at any forward speed the car simply will not respond, you also can't change down so many gears it would over-rev the engine. Also, I accidentally pulled the parking brake lever a few days ago which is just above the glove box lid. The car gently braked to a stop so I realised you could use the parking brake as an emergency brake without damage to the car.

Power steering yes, brakes, no.. the brake booster holds vacuum until the pedal is pressed and then released fully. If you're only pulling off to the side of the road, you hardly need power steering anyway.. It's no different to your car stalling because of a fault or, because it ran out of fuel...
@MrTdw1954

Don't listen to Brett he's an idiot when it comes to cars. The engine doesn't stop turning over just because you turn off the ignition as long as you are still in gear and rolling. How stupid would that be to engineer a car to lose steering and brakes with the bump of a button?
@gooseknack
@gooseknack 8 жыл бұрын
MrTdw1954 I never said the motor would stop? I was responding to other comments on the issue. However, it depends on why a motor stalls.. if it's electrical or fuel or simply shut down, it will keep turning until you hit the clutch or the auto's oil pressure drops too low. If it's mechanical, as in a conrod out the side of the block, a dropped valve or it seizes... then, hydraulic power steering and vacuum assisted brakes would be compromised. I can't speak for new vehicles as the newest vehicle I've ever owned is 28 years old. So I do know how older vehicles react when they stall. I suspect on some new vehicles with the computerized controls within transmission systems, that they may behave differently from being shut down or during an electrical fault..

I can reliably advise you that if you press the Start/Stop button in a (UK manufactured) bus in the UK, it DOES shut off the engine at highway speed. That happened the first time I drove one as I was told they had Start-Stop functionality and believed the Start/Stop button was used to disable it. Not an unreasonable assumption, but wrong nonetheless. Did you know it's awfully hard to steer a bus when the power steering is off?

put on neutral doesn't matter if its Automatic and you can turn it on even if its still moving I made myself the same question I tried it already.
@TomCatFromMA

The brakes become stiff but still work. You will need more stopping distance. The steering will be stiff as well but will still work - just need to use more muscle. The car may slow down quickly depending on what gear it's in which is why you would shift into neutral if you need to move faster in traffic in order to safely exit the road. Don't start your car in gear. No good can come of it. IF you have time, put it in neutral to start it. If all else fails do ANYTHING you want to keep from getting dead or killing others. ;-)

@Hartrusion
@Hartrusion 8 жыл бұрын
Depends on your car. I got a very very old one. Turning off the ignition while driving is like stepping off the pedal, all the steering and breaking assistants are still working when the engine is turned by the gearbox. Turning off the enigne and switch to neutral doesnt make brake assistand non-functional, as it is pneumatically powered and stores some energy, you still can break one or two times with assistant. Nothing bad, just take care not to lock your steering wheel by releasing the key.

I remember I had a car that the transmission wouldn't go in reverse. I had to make sure if I pulled into a parking space (like a mall) that it had a slight incline so I could slowly coast back out of the spot. Other than that I would have to push. I remember using that car for the prom. The incline wasn't steep enough. My date (later to become my first wife) steered while I pushed it out the parking spot.

At 3:40, if your throttle becomes stuck, NEVER turn the car off. You lose steering by doing that. Don’t use the e brake either, you’ll just lose all control and flip over. The best thing to do in that situation is jam it into neutral. That way you still have steering control, and you can gradually slow down and pump the break to help.

It depends on the situation. Where he was in the video you could do almost anything and even turning off the car. If you are in a busy city traffic situation or very winding road and throttle sticks, you may have serious problems no matter what you do because the car is going to coast for some time before completely stopping. I agree with you, it is nice to know what gets shut off on the car when you do press and hold the start button. Just as long as you don't panic and don't do anything.

@@kichappsThe steering column will still turn left and right only a little stiffer but at speed it would be barely noticeable, steering would cease totally if you pulled out the key from the ignition and the steering lock was engaged. Think of this. How did cars steer before power steering was invented ?? The answer is that it was just heavy under all conditions.

I didn't even have to stop. it took like two seconds for the steering wheel to loosen up a bit tho

@YouNameItGaming 8 жыл бұрын
Dominic Billie not a lie at all. if a gear is engaged and the car is moving, the driveline will turn the engine over again. not being in park/neutral only disables the starter motor which isn't needed when the vehicle is in motion. other alternatives would include disengaging the clutch then using the starter in a manual, or selecting neutral and using the starter in an automatic

MastaSmiles Not really, it's a required safety feature. You have to be able to restart the vehicle should it stall while going down the highway. Slowing down until you can put into park and start it is not an option, especially on a stretch of highway with no shoulder. It's also the only reason why you can shift into neutral. The typical driver has no other need for the ability to shift into neutral.
