Try looking at it differently. Autonomous automation is coming to most large scale business especially if demanding wage increases as significant as whats being asked for. Maybe they should be asking for no AA before 2030-2035 and aid to learn a new skill before that time. As an example would be to learn the programing/maintenance of the AA devices. Or a new skill all together. Even when introducing AA into the workplace you may take jobs away but you also introduce new jobs required to utilze the AA which is a higher paid skill.

My thing about the fear of automation that no one is discussing is that if every job becomes automated, then no one will have money to buy anything or pay for any services. Some people bring up the UBI aspect, but that still won't work because UBI will be funded by the rich, but they will run out of money and won't want to innovate. I just don't see full automation unless there is some conspiracy that we don't know about because it's basic economics, and if no one is employed, then the money runs out at some point.

@@thomaslawnandlandscape their pay is already double the national average and that's only part A. Part B is commitment by management that their jobs will not be replaced by AI robots, not one! So prices will necessarily have to skyrocket AND six years from now we can do it all over again, should we survive that long. We are at a crossroads of reckoning right now just in time for the election October surprise. .

I use Waste Management all the time. The first 500 pounds costs me $16.00. From what I saw you unload I doubt you had 500 pounds. I dumped over 2000 pounds once when we were moving. That was under $75.00 They weigh you on the way in and then on the way out. You pay for the difference. Not sure why you paid on the way in before you unloaded. It seems like you paid based on the size of the truck (assuming it was full) rather than actual dumped weight.

The age old saying of a good thing turned bad is the feeling i have had about unions for a long time. I don't have a problem with asking for raises. The unfortunate thing is weather or not anyone likes it automation will happen. People will be replaced in different areas of life. It will always decrease the numbers of employed personal but people will still be required to keep the innovations operating. Unfortunately we live live in a disposable world and the one thing that will remain constant is people want to pay as little as possible for the products they desire. Their attemts are bound to fail because it is unfathomable for even unions to dictate the future of the industries Every accident, injury and death is the motivator for a better safer way to do things. Every strike demanding higher wages is a motivator to automate all in the intrest of keeping profit margins reasonable. In the past 3 1/2 years we have seen an inflation rate of 37% and a wage growth of less then 10% this is not the only time period of low wage growth combined with high inflation. The last period drove the inovations of robotic welding and parts assembly this time period is no different. Companies whos profit margins are 1% and 2% are going to push for innovation. What the average worker see and equates it to is greed but the real greed starts with the government. Todays workforce could not have the output of the workforce of the 50s and 60s the sheer numbers of people for the positions required to complete the task are just not there the size of families has decreased from 3.64 children in the 60s to 1.75 currently which effects the workforce negatively. Plus reduces the tax base meaning less people supporting more infrastructure. So for at least the next 3 decades the amount of workers to the amount of nonworkers will remain out of balance nessetating inovations to correct the needs of all. The fortunate thing for the upcoming generations is that those inovations will remain.

Shawn, if they're replaced by automated systems, they deserve it because they have prices themselves out of the market. The average West Coast longshoremen (different union than the East Coast folks)starts at $100k/plus a very nice benefits package. Many make over $200k. They want a 77% pay increase! If you're the one paying someone$200k+ benefits to start, you're going to look for a cheaper, more efficient way of doing it. I know that you would do it in your businesses. In the long run, their extra wages will be passed on to the consumers. If you've ever been to a port to pick up anything (I used to drive a truck and had to pick up stuff at ports all of the time), you know that you have to sit around waiting for a LONG time as hardly any of them are actually working.

What is making automation (which can be pretty expensive to implement) even more attractive is the exponential increase in labor costs. California recently raised the minimum hourly wage of fast food workers to $20.00. There's no way a full crew of hamburger flippers can produce enough profits to cover their current cost, no matter how efficient they may be. Automating the process wherever possible has become an affordable, necessary (and more common) alternative. Cargo handling will likely go the same way in the future, especially since there are so many more opportunities for automating in that industry.

Autonomous for roofing where it is quite dangerous, a robot is fine, and like for steeper northern roofs the automation may be the only way to get the job done. Locally we need a dedicated crane or boom to attach safety restraints to which must be 12 feet higher than the peak of the roof also our workers comp is 25% for steep roofs so currently we have no companies who dare to work on a steeper roof than 45 degrees, but our churches are mostly 60 degrees and they can't get repaired since 1999. Some labor rates are reaching $75/h at some ports and still people won't apply as many jobs are outdoors and most millennials will not work out in winter. Add that to the fact that a robot will not lose any containers Autonomous loading and unloading should be fine. there will still be jobs. I also do not fear the Autonomous mowers as none can trim, none do fine detail work and the initial expense is a great barrier that most will not afford. Remember even Autonomous gear needs service, and we must just be innovative on our approach! When I was in school in 1988, forestry companies had many teams of 200 to 1000 chain saw operators working at $3.75/h (Minimum wage was $2.10/h). Each team of 200 got replaced by one heavy tree felling tractor with an operator that was getting $28.75. Every log was limed, bark stripped, stamped, and cut into 10 foot logs, that were auto loaded into skidders. Another tractor shredded all the limbs and stumps and blew the fibre into a chip truck. The savings in workman's comp paid for the tractors! Most western countries have dropping enrollment in the trades, even free trades training gets shunned as undesirables, the young only want cushy indoor jobs like fixing the Autonomous equipment. On the dump issue: Have you looked at stripping metal and wood from furniture. You have kids instead of paying to truck some distance then to dispose have your kids break the stuff down and bag some to the street, use the wood for fires or kindling and sell the metal to a scrap yard! Personally I find that I can fill 6 cans with scrap steel and aluminum each month. Also separated waste (from a sofa) for us are $5 per ton where as a sofa is $125/ton plus I make an average of $150 per month on scrap steel alone with less than 5 hours of extra time.

Automation has always been a problem. It is partly due to society's demand to always pay the lowest prices for goods and services. Here in the Netherlands farmers are always complaining that they can't find enough laborers to harvest certain foods/vegetables, mostly those that need to be harvested by hand. But they are not willing to pay more than minimum wage while it is a physically demanding job, so not enough people are willing to do it for that low wage. At the same time, these farmers are in a bind because the large supermarket chains are not willing to pay the higher prices needed for them to be able to pay the higher wages that would attract more workers. In the end, like it or not, it is all a consequence of the capitalist system and the consumers looking for the lowest price without regard the workers. We are able to choose to go a different route. Just look how more clothing sold in the west is made with guarantees that the production is done in fair circumstances and with fair wages for the workers. We are just not willing to pay more for all products to achieve the same.

Machines put people out of jobs and when they break down, they can, do and have caused things to grind to a halt. Machines cost a company far less to run; than it costs a company to pay workers their wages, so replacing people with machines maximises profits for the company and that's another reason that they make machines.

It's a slippery slope with automation I agree. I think what I don't like about this particular situation is there are only so many ports and the whole country relies on them. I feel like they (the workers) shouldn't have the ability to screw everybodies lives up for the next few months bc they want more money. Automation removes that threat and ensures this doesn't happen. We're in a capitalist country and theoretically I would say just let the market decide. In this case there are only so many ports so that's not an option.

Some 30 years ago, the fight was against "Robotics" of assembly lines. It's not a new battle. In companies' defense, automation is more efficient and removes the "Human factor" often attributed to mistakes or poor quality. I believe that the improved quality of today's cars is attributable to automation. I saw a demonstration of AI equipment for farming that destroyed weeds (laser) too small to be pulled, tested, watered and fertilized soil all at once, and replaced hundreds of farmworker. It also was capable of harvesting all being able to work 24/7. They claimed it lowered cost and increased production by over 50%.

Well if nobody hires a company who uses roofing robots then they will disappear right?

If anything, they’re pushing the industry closer to implementing automation in six years.

Don't think I have enough knowledge on this but we need to go back to 1812 when the issues changed from I believe from military running the ports to us the Americans and a lot of legal stuff involved. Again I need to do more research but think around the war of 1812 it changed at the dock!!

I'm so glad Florida doesn't charge to take things to the dump. Maybe because if they did people would just dump it on the side of a road somewhere. 😂

There’s another factor I’ll throw in to this shipping container thing. The shipping containers are used for trafficking. We need more hands on so they can hear the cries from the containers. If it was done all by machine no one would ever hear the cries. Trafficking has to stop. This is just one aspect. Now I know realistically they will never be able to check each and every container but I heard they can hear the cries. Something to think about….

As long as wages are imposed by, the employer will be looking for ways to eliminate that expense. Doing the same job at a comparable or lower expense will always win.
