That apathetic, aloof tone of “ I’m used to him not showing up”, is a trauma response. Children learning to detach from their pain, put on a brave face and “tough it up”, when their father repeatedly breaks their heart, is such an unhealthy coping mechanism. Yet that behavior is so prevalent in our community. My heart breaks for Charlie, she’s building a wall of steel, around that father wound, but it eventually will resurface later in life. Think of that scene on the Fresh Prince, between Will & Uncle Phil, when he broke down about his dad. Even though Waka is a phenomenal Dad, I pray that as she gets older, that wound can be healed between her and her (bio) father.

I agree 100%. The way she broke down crying about his absence at her party was a dead giveaway that this is a trauma response. Even Waka said, “I know what it is. Stop crying. I’m here. I’m not going anywhere.”
