I really don't know why this story gets so little love. There's so much to appreciate. The great filming work, the mutant costumes, the peak of CSO special effects in the caves and later in episode 6, the moody atmospheric musical score (the first return of Tristram Cary, known for The Daleks music).

I enjoy it for its unusual and quite bold concepts. It’s not one I’d rewatch over and over, but I do love the Mutts design.

@MichaelPhillipsatGreyOwlStudio I too love this story. Saw it originally in Canada on TVO (TV Ontario) in the mid-1970's when I was around 14. In High School my friend and I would point and yell "mutto!" when we saw each other in the hallway.

The BBC costume designer for this story, James Acheson, would work on 36 WHO episodes until Season 14. He would help shape the 4th Doctor's attire, and help on a few notable monsters. Later his costume designs: Time Bandits, The Meaning of Life, The Last Emperor, Dangerous Liaisons, Sam R; Spider Man films, Man of Steel - He has earned three Academy Awards.

The Mutants were originally not alluded to as Mutts by the Overlords but Munts… however, where a line referring to the Marshal being ‘Munt mad’ was reviewed in preparation it was considered to sound somewhat unfortunate and changed to Mutt! Re the Mutant costumes: these were designed by James Acheson who would go on to do other sterling and iconic work on Dr Who and then in Hollywood, winning an Oscar for his work. To meet the deadline on The Mutants, he spent all night working in the scene dock at TV Centre assembling the Mutt costumes.

James Acheson was the costume designer for this story - he went on to create the "iconic" look of the Time Lords, Tom Baker's Doctor, the Sontarans, the Zygons and went off to Hollywood and won a few Oscars.

I still get confused when news stories mention the Queen and are referring to Camilla, but I’m sure that applies to most people! Although it is Rick James who tends to get it in the neck for his performance in this story, James Mellor’s turn as Varan is decidedly overripe, though with that wig and costume perhaps he couldn’t help himself. The Mutts look impressive, like a more advanced version of the Zarbi, and the lighting in Chislehurst Caves is great. At that time, the caves were often used as a venue for rock concerts, and two years after this Led Zeppelin held a notoriously debauched party there to celebrate the launch of their new record label, which by all accounts was more hair raising than what we see here… I have tended to assume that the Doctor calls Jo “Miss Grant” so often in order to create a bit of an Avengers-style Steed and Mrs Peel vibe, but in the context of the show it could just be habit because he has heard the Brig call her that so often.

The caves really are a highlight of this story. Never knew about the Zeppelin concert. Love a bit of Zeppelin.

I like how often The Web Planet still gets a mention in your reviews, it's obviously working its way into your subconscious so that but the time you finish classic WHO, you will appreciate that story for its beauty! When The Doctor hands that prop to Ky and it opens, you can almost hear Pertwee thinking "thank god I don't have to carry that tedious thing any more". I tried to forward a link to a friend for your ladies clothing range ... based on information given that page doesn't load 🤣

The novel of this is good and the Mutant costumes by Acheson. It's probably my least liked Pertwee story though. It's either this or the Doomsday Weapon. (Colony in Space) I think it's really just the low budget which doesn't do space operas a favour. Or is Garrick Hagon cursed? He's in this then he's mostly cut out of Star Wars lol

This story was both inspired by apartheid AND the Partition of India. It’s a much better story than recent efforts in that regard, that’s for sure.
@CaptApril1232 ай бұрын
I'm guessing like 'District 9' and 'Demons of the Punjab'. 'Demons of the Punjab' was one of the few Jodi episodes I really liked, I knew very little about the partition and that story got me to actually learn more about it.

@ unfortunately the ‘facts’ in that story were totally wrong. I watched a really great video deconstructing this story by a Hindu Indian KZbinr. She was very scathing.
