I *love* Drach's video on Bismarck, but for some reason the way you presented the timeline in this one finally made some things make more sense to me in terms of who was where when before the actual battle. So it's been a great accompaniment to the other video for me, thanks! (It may simply be different maps/graphics choices. My brain just suddenly went "oh, I see now." 😂 )

His so- called theory hasn't a leg to stand on, my friend. Hood was not a roller. On the contrary, Hood was well- known throughout the Royal Navy as an excessively wet ship. The last known photo of Hood (en route to the Denmark Strait) shows this all too clearly. The ship's stern is completely awash all the way back to the aft turret, as well as on the starboard (and likely) port side of it.

Nothing wrong with being a niche channel. I would probably grow quicker if I specialised but if I did, I know I would get bored quickly. I’m happy to take a few poor performing videos for the sake of keeping my own interest and enthusiasm for researching and writing on different topics. It is always disappointing when a video doesn’t do so well but that’s the price, so I’ve just got to take the rough with the smooth. And some videos are slow burners, anyway. They may pick up later, we shall see. 😇👍🏻

How was a traumatised cat supposed to cling to a plank in mountainous seas, and does anyone REALLY believe it was spotted by a crewman aboard HMS Tartar and a message went up to the destroyer's captain who ordered his ship to heave to in an active combat zone to rescue it? A drunken sailor's yarn dreamt up in a "Guz" (Plymouth) pub and picked up by the British WW2 press as a "raise morale" story.

BRILLANT! Even someone like me, that doesn't understand anything about ships and naval batter, could understand. I have a mystery... My wife's grandfather was on a ship that was hit by a German U-Boat during WWII. He survived! Unfortunately, the family does not know the know of the ship or any details. I know, right! Since watching this video I have been trying to track down the ship, or at least hone it down to a few potentials. The details that I, kinda, know... - The ship must have been UK - Newfoundland (origin of her grandfather's birth) did not join Canada until 1949; i.e. after WWII - I could not find any evidence that Newfoundland fight side-by-side with Canadians during WWII, at least not naval encounters - Something that I know that I don't know is... not sure if ship sunk or just hit - Her grandfather did not talk about events of the war, so not sure if anyone truly knows the answer My knowledge of WWII naval battles and its history is between zero and nil. So, if anyone has any ideas, I would greatly appreciate them! Cheers

Well, there’s plenty to go at, for sure. So, there’s a high chance 😉 But when considers that Uboats sank hundreds of ships over the course of the war, it’s something of a needle in a haystack. I won’t pretend I have any extensive knowledge on convoy or merchant shipping in general but you never know if someone more clued up than myself will see your comment and be able to provide you with the answer. 🤞🏻😇

44:40 and that's excluding the losses of HMS Ark Royal, HMS Barham, the raid on Alexandria which disabled HMS Queen Elizabeth and HMS Valiant and the losses at the Battle of Crete (which was happening at around the exact same time as the Battle of The Denmark Strait). 1941 was not a good year for the Royal Navy.

Makes it more personable rather than just someone monotonously talking AT you. There’s a lot of other channels that do that and whilst they do tell you what you want to know, they aren’t memorable. I want people to come back again and again because they are getting an equal mix of documentary and story.

Bismarck was actually quite badly designed by WWII battleship standards even if you leave out the questionable strategic value of battleships by that point. Her reputation is almost entirely from this one engagement she won entirely through luck.

Tragic as the loss of the Hood was at the time, who had the greater loss? The Royal Navy in losing what was, at the end of the day, a WW1 battlecruiser, or the Kriegsmarine in losing the Bismark, a brand new, modern battleship? This compares to the loss of HMS Royal Oak sunk at Scapa Flow. An outdated WW1 Revenge class battleship.

It’s a fair question, for sure but the difference in splash sizes between 8” & 15” are quite considerable. The evidence suggests the shells that landed in that area of the ship (and around) were 15” ones. Having said that, I couldn’t discount the possibility that one of Prinz Eugen’s shells could have been the one. Food for thought, for sure.
@walterkronkitesleftshoe6684
@walterkronkitesleftshoe6684 10 ай бұрын
3 or 4 minutes prior to Hood's destruction Adm Lütjens had, at the request of Bismarck's chief gunnery officer Adalbert Schneider, ordered Prinz Eugen to switch targets to engage HMS Prince of Wales. Prinz Eugen also had fired HE rounds throughout the engagement which had even less chance that her 8" AP rounds (which themselves had NO chance of penetrating Hood's vertical or horizontal armour).

Always thought Hoods sinking was completely avoidable. True to British form it would have been been more productive if they had actually hit something when the shooting started! The RAF were tarred with the same brush where only 3 bombs in 1000 would hit within 2 miles of the intended target.

Oh no, the armchair admirals! Hood was under direct orders to stop Bismarck at any cost. She steered straight for the enemy at speed and the pair of British ships did their work as ordered: Bismark could not continue her raid and had to limp to a friendly port. On the way she was sunk. Job done, even though the cost was high.
@walterkronkitesleftshoe6684
@walterkronkitesleftshoe6684 10 ай бұрын
Yes Hood's sinking was avoidable. She could have instead just simply allowed the two German commerce raiders to steam unmolested into the wide open vastness of Atlantic, and tear into the convoy routes that they were already on the threshold of, sinking untold merchant ships from the ELEVEN British convoys that were transiting the Atlantic at that point. Maybe go read some more about the realities of naval warfare and offer less uninformed conjecture on what you believe should have happened?
