Nice presentation, and sort of unemotional and factual comparison, leaving the choice up to the individual, without making one seem "better" than the other...

Everyone has their preferences. Personally, I like the sound of the RAV better. One thing not mentioned in the video is you sometimes have to be careful if playing a handpan in a sunny area. As the metal heats up it expands and can throw the instrument out of tune ( till it cools back down ). With a RAV you really don't have to worry about it ever going out of tune.. Just something to consider

I think I prefer the RAV as well. To me it sounds very relaxing and just as beautiful! Also the fact that it doesn't need to be tuned was a bonus in my head, especially after watching how handpans have to be tuned.

I get the rav's idea but the handpan to me has such a more natural sound than the almost mechanical sound to the rav. Even the overtones still don't resonate naturally like the hand pan does. The handpan has a smoother sound to me all together.

If you play a RAV less like a drum and more like you would play on a piano, hitting it with only the flesh of your fingertips and mainly on the end of the steel tongues the sound can be much more smooth and natural than demonstrated in this video where it is played more percussively. It also really depends on the model and series, when i compare the older RAV models in the same scale with newer ones they do sound very different and have other sound properties (i think the metallic sound is'nt as noticeable in newer models). I do like both though. In my opinion handpans have these deep hard hitting resonance on the root note to them and RAVs have this watery long slow buildup of resonance.

@billwesley
@billwesley 4 жыл бұрын
The hand pan sounds more nuanced, inharmonic, dissonant percussive and exotic, the totality of the effect is haunting, The tonged pan sounds more direct, harmonic, consonant, sustained and familiar, the totality of the effect is restful. The first is better for the spirit of exploration and adventure, the second is best for a spirit of comfort and safety. I would switch between both as needed depending on mood.

Awesome, I'd have to lean toward the Rav style of drum. I bought a 12inch 'tank' / steel drum off Bangood or Aliexpress for my Nephew for Christmas and I fell in love and ordered myself one. Just cheapies...well $200 Australian cheap but sounds magical. Best played with the included rubber ended hammers. Easy enough for a 2 year old....easy enough for my 40 yr old arse! 😀

The handpan seems to be derived from the Caribbean steal drums. They both have close to the same manufacturing style other then the handpan is curves up while the steal durm curves in words, and of course the handpan is played with the hands while the steal drum is played with drumsticks. But all three, the handpan, steal drum, and RAV are cool instruments.

Since 2008 you have to sign that you dont sell the Hang for i higher price than the price for the new product - you can contact the Factory, they can connect you to owners that warnt to sell. I was about to buy a gubal (Not produced anymore) for over 2000 Euro, but Todd i bought a set with 4 Instruments for 6000. for those who are interested: visit the factory in Bern, you can see the factory, play many Instruments and chose your Instrument (i found 3 very great ones fitting together perfectly)

Same!! I love the simplicity and the fact that you can make it without any superficial modern elements. Why searching complexity when you can make something simple but beautiful with so many opportunities of sounds!~

There is no comparison between a High Quality Hand Pan and a RAV. People buy RAVs because they are cheaper, I can't imagine any other reason. Handpans kick Ravs ass.

I prefer handpan more because too much reverb could be annoying sometimes, handpan sounds more balanced.

From what I could find on youtube with decent sound quality Halo, Saraz, Pantam SbP, and my personal favorite AsaChan are all great. but fuck paying thousands of dollars and being trapped on a waitlist. My Rav sounds amazing and cost $800 with shipping n a bag. (btw the bag sucks cuz its a shoulder strap n its super long. get something custom on etsy for a little more)

Does the handpan ever need to be re-tuned?
@didgeproject
@didgeproject 2 жыл бұрын
Yes, the handpans require regular maintenance tuning if they are played with force. Gentle playing should not take them out of tune, so it is possible to own a handpan and not need to get it tuned up. The RAV Drums almost always stay in tune except for in the case of extreme force being applied. Cheers!

I have a handpan that I can play easily with my hands/fingers. I have a tongue drum I have to use mallets on. Is the Rav as easy to play with your hands as a handpan?
