Everyone has their preferences. Personally, I like the sound of the RAV better. One thing not mentioned in the video is you sometimes have to be careful if playing a handpan in a sunny area. As the metal heats up it expands and can throw the instrument out of tune ( till it cools back down ). With a RAV you really don't have to worry about it ever going out of tune.. Just something to consider
@RababaInc4 жыл бұрын
what about rust formation or bending the tongues?

I think I prefer the RAV as well. To me it sounds very relaxing and just as beautiful! Also the fact that it doesn't need to be tuned was a bonus in my head, especially after watching how handpans have to be tuned.

If you play a RAV less like a drum and more like you would play on a piano, hitting it with only the flesh of your fingertips and mainly on the end of the steel tongues the sound can be much more smooth and natural than demonstrated in this video where it is played more percussively. It also really depends on the model and series, when i compare the older RAV models in the same scale with newer ones they do sound very different and have other sound properties (i think the metallic sound is'nt as noticeable in newer models). I do like both though. In my opinion handpans have these deep hard hitting resonance on the root note to them and RAVs have this watery long slow buildup of resonance.

The hand pan sounds more nuanced, inharmonic, dissonant percussive and exotic, the totality of the effect is haunting, The tonged pan sounds more direct, harmonic, consonant, sustained and familiar, the totality of the effect is restful. The first is better for the spirit of exploration and adventure, the second is best for a spirit of comfort and safety. I would switch between both as needed depending on mood.
