Along with Christmas being important to the plot rather than JUST the background setting. John's whole reason for flying home is for the holidays with his family. The only reason everyone is there in the office building so late is due to the Christmas party, which is also the reason Hans chooses that time, and also the only reason John would be there to stop it, rather than Meeting Holly after she gets off work, outside the office. Christmas is easier to replace in Home Alone than it is in Die Hard/More integral to Die Hard than it is to Home Alone, and Home Alone is not disputed as a Christmas movie.

It gets everything right: It portrays and sets up a vulnerable hero with issues to resolve, a hero who cares about innocent people, a hero who isn’t there just to fight terrorists, he just so happens to be the only guy left who can take care of the situation. For the time it came out, most of the 80s action movies were the typical Arnold/Stallone/Van Damme "big guy" ripped muscled action hero, Bruce/John McClane changed that and made it so the "every guy" can be a hero type. This movie was a game changer as it also had a very simple yet "complex" plot that had twists and turns, reveals, that made it a complete movie, which was also lacking in most of the 80s action movies.
@DanielS20012 жыл бұрын
The scenes that take place at the Nakatomi Building, the underground garage and the streets near it were actually filmed at Fox Plaza, which was a new building mostly unoccupied and under construction at the time, in Century City. In fact, the floor that John pulls the fire alarm on was actually under construction and they incorporated it into the filming and required little set dressing to give it the appearance of it being worked on.

You probably already know the major fun facts, but here are a few more from the director's commentary. He was very worried about the rooftop sequence, particularly about having that many people standing underneath a real hovering helicopter. He knew that one mistake could kill a lot of people, so he called it off after only two fly-bys. Hence why you don't get a good look at the roof from the helicopter until after it's evacuated. Also, the roof explosion wasn't done with a miniature; to get the scale, they set up a camera 5 miles across the city. The director's favorite moment is the elevator "ding" right before it explodes. Bruce Willis suffered permanent 2/3rds hearing loss in his left ear after shooting that one terrorist through the table. Also, Alan Rickman's "Alas, your Mr Takagi did not see it that way, so he won't be joining us for the rest of his life" and chowing down at the buffet table was ad-libbed. Same goes with Al Leong, the guy who munched on a candy bar while waiting for the police infiltration.

Keep in mind also this: it's implied that he's become kind of the stereotype of a "cowardly/useless office cop" since he had not come to grips with the trauma of his mistake (he is not killing people, either by mistake or in justified ways... but he has built a shell that makes him, basically, useless) to the point he even disregards things at the beginning (his life was in danger if he had walked all the corridor... but it's interestin he was willing to do the whole search as the protocol says and then he just said "why bother") until John/things force him to be again the cop that he used to be (which includes using a gun to take a life, in case he needs to).

No only could you smoke in airports, you could smoke in hospitals! You could smoke in airplanes (in the smoking section). Seatbelts were just suggestions....as well as motorcycle helmets. At the time of release of this movie, over 2,500 high school campuses still had competitive rifle teams. This is a completely different country than when this was made.

@@steriopticon2687 Holly was never part of his negotiations tactics, it was Ellis pretending to be John's friend who invited him to the party, and Ellis pretending his life was in danger to get John to give himself up. The OP was correct, props to Ellis in that respect.
@DocuzanQuitomos2 жыл бұрын
To an extent it's an interesting choice he didn't give up John's relationship to Holly right away. But then keep in mind Ellis has been trying to hit on Holly for quite some time, as the opening scenes of the movie show. We can assume Ellis doesn't give Holly away because he is saving her for later. If John is captured and killed, Holly is free of any ties. If John is captured and not killed, Ellis could argue he saved John's life (and the life of everybody, for what he understand of the situation) and maybe play the "hero card" to influence Holly, (their marriage is not going well, it could be finally over, if Holly had the right motivation to move on). I don't think he was honorable, he was just protecting his interests with John's wife. His selfish and high mind doesn't get, though, that the guys don't plan to let the hostages (Holly and himself included) go, in any case.

The building is FOX Plaza in Century City LA. It was under construction at the time, FOX rented the building to itself to produce this movie. The building was also in Lethal Weapon 2. The one line I disliked in this movie - was Hans Grubber says to Holly "I've moved up to kidnapping - so be polite" ... At that point they'd killed several people - including police officers - So he'd already earned himself a death penalty several times over - kidnapping would be an after thought at this point...

BBC Radio 5 did a whole thing on "is it a Christmas Movie" last night. The consensus: It WASN'T a Christmas movie (release date, themes, whatever the arguments always were). ...but... It IS NOW because the public has willed it to be. I'd agree with that tbh. But then I've always considered it a Christmas movie.

To me, a “Christmas Film” really represents a subgenre; you can have Christmas Horror films, Christmas Romantic Comedies, Christmas Comedies, Christmas Dramas (a little less popular, but often dramas with religious overtones are common), and this film to me represents the Christmas Action film.

$640 million in 1988 = $1.5 BILLION in 2021. Yes, Natalie...this is one of my favorite Christmas movies, too. The building was actually still under construction and is Fox Plaza...the future headquarters for 20th Century Fox. So, the studio just decided to pay themselves rent and use the construction location for the film. Which actually helped cut down the budget a bit. Prior to this Alan Rickman was basically a stage actor and sometime TV actor in the UK. This was his big break at age 42. He was still riding the high of being nominated for a Tony Award in the Broadway production of Christopher Hampson's 'Les Liaisons Dangereuses'. He initially turned down the role, not wanting to typecast himself as a villain. The play Rickman was in was also made into a film...'Dangerous Liaisons' with Glenn Close, John Malkovich and Michelle Pfeiffer, and Malkovich played the same role Rickman played The Vicomte de Valmont (and remade as 'Valmont' with Colin Firth in the role and then adapted to an American high school setting in 'Cruel Intentions' with Ryan Phillipe as Sebastian Valmont).

I appreciate that, within the context of your reactions, you also add comments on the shows from a movie making perspective because of your experience. You articulate your thoughts and emotions very well and you allow yourself to be immersed in the world. I thought you, of all reactors to this film I've seen, would appreciate this little known (today) fact. Whether it was intentional or not, Al Powell (the cop on the radio who shoots Karl at the end) and his tragic backstory reflected a real incident that was still fresh in the memory of the Los Angeles audience. I saw this movie three times in the theater when it came out and the audience had this collective groan of anguish because the real thing happened just like the character said. When he got his redemption at the end, proving to himself he could still pull his weapon when it was needed, audiences let out a deafening cheer, which I think was more than appropriate. I thought you'd appreciate this context. And, YES, Die Hard is a Christmas movie, even though it came out in the middle of summer and was not expected to do so well.

18:36 Sure, you COULD call the offices during a party but not a person. Cellphones were still rare then and still almost the size and weight of bricks. but smaller than the one Danny Glover whips out in Lethal Weapon. Argyle's phone in the limo is even older technology radio telephones which existed since 1946 as MTS (mobile telephone service). The whole whole phone unit weighed tens of pounds! They lasted until the FCC pretty much outlawed their use when everything went digital and killed that industry (RIP 2008).

@@Mansplainer2099-jy8ps No, not Japan. You and Natalie think too much in modern day terms. This is 1988 before The Web though general Internet existed. So not much news from the US, only CNN on cable(1980). Before 9/11, even before the 1992 World Trade Center bombing. So modern terrorism (post-9/11) procedures were not even thought of yet. No one would ask Japan until the FBI was formally involved IRL, or in this movie universe do you see the competance level of the FBI? EDIT: I did say "Oh, we can go check that out." That was left intenionally vague to adress such difficulties.
@Mansplainer2099-jy8ps2 жыл бұрын
@@michaelgonzalez6295 Oh for crying out loud. It has nothing to do with cellphones or the Internet or the FBI or terrorist procedures. Natalie's point is the LAPD would try to get a list of who'd be at that Christmas party from _anywhere_ outside that building so they can check if they're _not_ in that building. Because someone claims they are hostages in that building. That _anywhere_ includes Japan, "Nakatomi corporation? This is the Los Angeles Police Department. We have reason to believe your employees at this address in LA are held hostage by terrorists. Fax a list of said employees to LAPD HQ ASAP.", but I assume there'd be somewhere more local to call first since the whole point of bureaucracy is to have information like that accessible.

I've never been able to decide a winner, but in terms of just a solid, anyone can follow it, no character no matter how annoying feels contrived, you need every bit of it because everything is connected so there is no filler to be cut out, just what you might call The Perfect Movie it's between this and Back To The Future.
