"Long Kiss" is greatly underrated and deserves a look-see. Both Geena Davis and Samuel L. Jackson are great in it, their chemistry pops on the screen. Geena plays the precursor to all female action stars - Salt, Black Widow, Wonder Woman. TLKG was released in 1996 (a year after Cuthroat Island - starring Ms. Davis). 12:08 p.m. Sunday 12/12/21 - I hereby retract my uneducated, and wrong, statement above. It was not Geena Davis's Charlie Baltimore, but rather Pearl Fay White (1914 Perils of Pauline) and Evalyn Knapp (1933 Perils of Pauline) who are the precursors of the female action hero. Of course, you can argue that Ellen Ripley is the modern day female action hero that stands out in most film lovers minds.

A bit inaccurate , plane altitude is measured by instruments in the plane , not by air controller tower , ground proximity warning system (GPWS) would have warned "Terrain , Pull up , Terrain , Pull up ..." , FAA has required all large turbine and turbojet airplanes to install GPWS since 1974 . Height above ground is determined by a radar altimeter. Then we have flight charts , with those you are able to determine position , safe altitude , best route to a destination , alternative landing areas in case of an in-flight emergency , you use these when you do instrument landing , where you cant see whats outside , then you trust whats on charts and on plane instruments .

(He won an Emmy as Leading Male in a Drama for it, but also won a Golden Globe as Best Actor in a Musical or Comedy; it skirted that line.) Moonlighting was a great show that really only ended because Die Hard made him "too big for TV." “Die Hard 2” was a great choice! It’s definitely my favorite from among the “Die Hard” sequels. As I recall, the film received bad press early on because it was a “troubled production,” as they say-over budget, multiple directors coming and going, etc. But the end result on the screen is very satisfying. As TBR Schmidt and Samantha noted, this movie reunites many of the cast members from the original “Die Hard.” And thematically, as well, there are many elements of continuity with the first film. Sad to say, though, that those first two films are the only real “Die Hard” films. All of the sequels that followed were basically just generic Bruce Willis-action movies with the “Die Hard” label slapped on them. Which is not to say that they're completely without merit. People still remember Samuel L. Jackson’s performance in the third film, “Die Hard with a Vengeance” (1995), for example. But for me, the “Die Hard” franchise ended with the second film, which, as it happens, serves as a very nice bookend for the classic original.

Bruce Willis was my favorite actor as an kid. From the tv series "Moonlighting" to releasing an album called "The Return of Bruno". Becoming both the highest paid actor of the day and an major movie star with DH1. The teaser trailer for Die Harder had me so pumped to see what McClane would do next. Bruce says a line from the movie, "How can the same thing happen to the same guy, twice?". July 4th weekend, my mother and me saw it and went so crazy over it. The director, Renny Harlin had another movie out the same year called The Adventures of Ford Fairlane. The action, suspense, humor and stakes were a little looser. But still so entertaining. dir. Harlin also made some other classics:Cliffhanger (1993), Cutthroat Island (1995), The Long Kiss Goodnight (1996), Deep Blue Sea (1999), Mindhunters (2004) and The Covenant (2006). There is one gaping plot hole in this movie that takes me out of it for the most part. The whole plot relies on the planes flying around Dulles Airport for hours on end because they don't have enough fuel to make it to any other airports. The problem is Reagan National Airport is a 30 minute Drive from Dulles. Not to mention that there are at least 3 other airports within 45 minutes driving from Dulles in the DMV that would have taken all of those flights in an emergency, especially in that type of weather. If those planes could stay up there for as long as they did, they would have been able to get to another airport once Dulles went dark on them. Other than that, this movie is great. It builds up tension so well and shows you how evil Colonel Stuart really is when he kills a whole planes worth of people with no emotions.
@ericmkendall13 жыл бұрын
That plot hole may not be as big as you’ve made it out to be here. I don’t know off-hand about other airports close by with runways long enough to land big commercial airliners. But the movie does make reference to what is now Reagan National Airport. In a scene that takes place in the tower before the terrorist takeover, Trudeau (Fred Thompson) exclaims, “Great! National just shut down. Totally iced. They’re going to be sending us their planes!” Bear in mind, Ronald Reagan’s name wasn’t added to the name of the airport until 1998, eight years after “Die Hard 2” was released. Back then, it was just Washington National Airport and often simply referred to as "National."

Speaking of comedians, the main bad guy, William Sadler, was once a member of the comedy group Assaulted Nuts. I always liked this movie, but I don't buy the idea that everyone's happy and all is well at the end. The crash of the British Airways passenger jet earlier in the film casts a pall over everything that follows, and no matter what good spirits may eventually prevail, there's still the matter of flaming wreckage and hundreds of bodies still lying out there on that runway at the fadeout. Instead of the celebratory feeling that the movie tries to fade out with, the mood would actually continue to be that of profound grief and mourning over such a horrible tragedy. (One thing I always wondered about, though--would a plane whose tanks were "bone dry" make such a big fiery explosion?)

Around this time the fax machine was new technology, so the scene where the audience sees John takes a piece of paper in DC, and sends it through the machine and Al in LA picks it up the copy, was a big deal to the average person who had never seen one work before. This was a good movie from an action standpoint, BUT, there were a lot of mistakes...the main one being the opening where Willis gets his car towed in a blizzard at Dulles International - then is inside the Bradley Terminal at LAX in the summertime (Notice people in T-shirts and shorts), then he walks up to a Pacific Bell payphone... Then, there was the "baggage room from hell"...I used to work in the baggage room in the Bradley Terminal at LAX, and believe me, baggage rooms don't look anything like that, lol! Oh - the guy that playes Thornberg, the reporter: he could have been an action star in his own right: he played Goldie Hawn's husband in one of Spielberg's first films (and a great one), "The Sugarland Express". Now, the next one in the series, "Die Hard With A Vengance", THAT is a great film! (And it takes place during the summer)

A lot of love for Die Hard 3, but still find Die Hard is the gold standard in the series, followed by Die Hard 2, then the third. Still watchable, but the younger Bruce was more believable and entertaining as John McClane for me. The second one had more relatability and similarities to the first film, which is an all-time classic, which is why I liked it far better than the 3rd or 4th. When Bruce started getting up there in age in the late 90s, it took something away for me when (along with the more ridiculous plot lines) the film series continued on. What made the first one the greatest (apart from having the best villain of the series), was that in the first one John McClane was terrified while doing this stuff. He didn't tie a fire hose around his waist and jump out the window because he was some unstoppable, fearless action hero, but because he had no choice, that if he didn't do it, innocent people were going to die. The second film had a lot of those elements, but they further they got from that, the worse the films got. Another must watch series, which I know you'll love, is the Lethal Weapon series, with the first one also taking place around Christmas.

@40:30, the supporting characters in Die Hard movies can be some really resourceful and heroic people. Sometimes just as much if more than McClane. In the next Die Hard film there is one character who has this quiet moment of heroism that I always makes me smile. Nothing showy or over the top, just an ordinary otherwise goofy dude standing up during a time of crisis.

People sleep on Die Hard 2 because it's not as good as the first and the third one but it's a pretty good 90's action film ! Great location, nice action sequence, still amazing soundtrack, spectacular ending and peak Bruce Willis ! The only real weakness it has over the other 2 is the vilain who is pretty weak really...just a commando guy with a plan really, a classic 80's vilain. He is not as memorable as Hans Gruber and the one in 3 ( i won't reveal since they haven't seen it yet !). He does the job and got lot of goons so it works... Still a very fun movie !!

McTiernan purposely made Gruber a thief instead of a terrorist because he didn't want a villain people would feel bad for liking. Especially when he just wanted to make a fun action film. It's also why Ode to Joy was added into the score. McTiernan heard the piece, thought it sounded upbeat and thought that would musically let people know you're allowed to have fun with this.

And that whole "gun won't show on the x-ray machine" thing is completely false. Glocks are not "fancy" at all, they are probably the most common handgun to be used right now, and they have plenty of metal parts in them to set off metal detectors and be easily seen in x-ray machines...
@Stevarooni3 жыл бұрын
They weren't _that_ common in the U.S. at the time. But absolutely, they have plenty of metal. They just have polymer receivers. At the times though, Hollywood was playing up the "Undetectable gun" to support the passage of more gun control.
@Rocket13773 жыл бұрын
Ah, but the gun is a "Glock 7", which is completely fictional and doesn't exist in the real world. It DOES exist in the Die Hard universe, so it can be whatever the filmmakers want it to be.
@nirfz3 жыл бұрын
@@Rocket1377 And what kind of ammo would it have shot? Ammo consists of metal. You got metal casings and metal bullets. Even if the "Glock 7" would be made of only ceramics and plastic like they mentioned in the movie, the ammo was not. And it definetly shows up in those machines. Without ammo, they would have no ammo and just an inconvenient small gun looking club to hit someone. Still the gun isn't what i have the most issues in this movie.
