For the water jugs, you fill the 3-gal jug fully. Pour that into the empty 5-gal jug. Repeat, but stop when the 5-gal jug is full. That leaves 1 gal in the 3-gal jug. Dump the 5-gal jug out completely. Then transfer the 1-gal from the smaller jug to the 5-gal jug. Fill the 3-gal jug again, and then add that to the 5-gal jug's 1 gal. The 1 gal that was in there plus 3 gal just added equals 4 gallons...if you have time to move that much water in and out of jugs.
@yendub2 жыл бұрын
However, they did it backwards. The second solution. 1. Fill the 5 gallon jug. 2. Pour 3 gallons into the 3 gallon jug. 3. Empty 3 gallon jug. 4. Put remaining 2 gallons into 3 gallon jug. 5. Fill 5 gallon jug. 6. Pour 1 gallon into 3 gallon jug (which already has 2 gallons in it) leaving 4 gallons in the 5 gallon jug.
@garethdavies80042 жыл бұрын
Or you could fill the 5-gal fully then fill the 3-gal from the 5-gal which leaves 2-gal in the 5-gal jug. Then transfer the 2-gal to the 3-gal jug, then refill the 5-gal fully then fill the rest of the 3-gal jug from the full 5-gal jug, and that leaves 4-gal in the 5-gal jug.
@erinhaury57732 жыл бұрын
@@yendub This is the faster solution, which I imagine is why they chose it. You see these types of puzzles a lot in video games, KOTOR did the same thing, but you were transferring power between pillars instead of water in jugs.

[Disarmed] Your solution is the more common one I've heard, specifically because it should be able to do it faster than my solution, and it's clearly the solution they chose in the movie. I just like offering alternate solutions.
@damiannieman28702 жыл бұрын
That is a solution but not the solution they used in the film. -In the film they fill the 5 gal jug - pour it into the 3 gal jug which leaves 2 gal in the 5 gal jug. -Dump the 3 gal and then pour in the 2 gal out of the 5 gal jug into the 3 gal jug. -Now you have 2 gal in the 3 gal jug -They fill up the 5 gal jug full and out of that pour into the 3 gal jug which already has 2 gal in it filling it -Which leaves exactly 4 gal left in the 5 gal jug. Most of the this ended on the cutting room floor - but they show the last step in the process the film.

One of the last big budget action movies to use almost entirely practical effects. Everything from the opening explosion (they shut down that block for a few days to simulate that bomb), to the subway crash (real subway cars used) - that makes such a big difference imo. The CG effects used today can be brilliant and amazing, but they also usually always feel like a video game.
@tylerfoster62672 жыл бұрын
Actually, one of the reasons I defended the fourth film for many years is, aside from a couple of obvious examples near the very ending, they also used an impressive number of practical effects. Leaving some info out for Sam's sake, but for the movie's iconic trailer shot, they flung a real [redacted] through a real [redacted] hung from a crane (although they did, in my opinion, negatively impact the shot by adding a guy jumping to safety using greenscreen). For another scene, they built a three-story elevator shaft and hung a real [redacted] in it. I'm pretty sure I even saw a behind-the-scenes shot that revealed they built a contraption with one [redacted] on a spinning mechanism that would land it safely on top of two other [redacted], and then composited Bruce Willis and another actor ducking between them (the completed shot looks like CGI, but I at least admire the work they put in). I feel like the effort shows in the finished product, even if I would have really preferred if it were rated R (the "Unrated" version is an imitation, with 90% of the language added with ADR and blood composited in using CGI).

The water thing had me perplexed for a long time... once I figured it out though I realised in the movie they cut back to them when they are halfway through solving the puzzle, so its impossible to play along as they solve it just from watching the movie. Here's how you do it if you want to know: 1. Fill 5G jug 2. pour 5G jug into 3G jug, leaving 2 gallons in the 5G jug 3. Empty 3 gallon jug. 0 gallons in 3G jug, still 2 gallons in the 5G jug 4. Pour the 2 gallons from the 5 gallon jug into the 3 gallon jug. 5G now has 0G. 3G now has 2 gallons of water with 1 gallon empty 5. fill 5 gallon jug again 6. Pour from 5 gallon jug into the 2 gallon jug until 2 gallon jug is full, since there is only 1 gallon to fill, this leaves 4 gallons in the 5 gallon jug.
@Fyrecide2 жыл бұрын
There's a couple different ways to do it actually. I laid out 2 myself, but there's probably more though. I think both ways require at least 5 steps though.
@blechtic2 жыл бұрын
@@Fyrecide Another one is: Fill 3, pour it to 5, leaving room for 2. Fill 3 again, pour 2 from it to 5. Empty 5, pour the remaining 1 there plus a full 3. I don't think there are any other solutions, except longer versions of these (i.e. doing something pointless), because you have only 2 jugs and to get to 4 you either need to subtract 1 out of 5 or add 3 to existing 1. One jug has to always be either empty or full and, while the other jug obviously starts empty, it can't also be full or empty after that, because that gets you nowhere. You can only work with one jug at a time, since one jug holds the variable you've worked up to and you use the other's constant volume for adding or subtracting. That doesn't leave much wiggle room. Come to think of it, I wonder if there's some kind of a duality for all solvable two-jug problems that you can always get the final answer in exactly two ways, once through summation and once through subtraction. No, wait, that can only work for a target figure somewhere between the jug sizes. If it's smaller than both, the last action always has to be a subtraction (and if it's larger than both, the answer has to be in two jugs, at least one of them full). The question remains, though, whether there's always exactly two ways to get to the number. I suspect that might be the case.

The relationship between McClane and Zeus was also great. There's also a lot of really cool set pieces, and it taking place all over the city helps because they could do car chases. Another good one is the elevator scene. The quality of the series starts to drop after this one in the way you were saying. The fourth movie wasn't bad but the set pieces in it at times were way too ridiculous. I saw part of the fifth one but it never caught much of my interest.

If you look up the director, John McTiernan, you've watched quite a few of his movies and loved them all. But there's two more you should watch, IMO. 'The 13th Warrior' Based off of a Michael Crichton book that tricked historians into thinking fiction was real. And 'Basic', with John Travolta, was also really good.
@thetechsite96192 жыл бұрын
"that tricked historians into thinking fiction was real." Do you have a source on this? I think there's an afterword where Crichton describes why he wrote the book and that makes it clear that it's fiction. The 13th Warrior is surprisingly good, considering Crichton forcibly took over directing from McTiernan in post. Usually that kind of stuff is not a good sign.
@Waldorf-20202 жыл бұрын
@@thetechsite9619 I wish I remembered where I learned about it. It was around the early 2000's when I read several in depth articles. If I remember correctly, the manuscript was floated around before the book came out and that's what historians got their hands on. It was being touted as a real, and the academic crowd debated it until the book was released, revealing it to be fiction. There was a backlash, and Crichton had to add that explanation to subsequent printings. It sounded to me that the publishers may have done it as a promotional stunt and it got out of control. Crichton didn't seem to have anything to do with it. So, yeah.. memories from 20 years ago. And who knows how accurate the articles were to begin with. (Even if I want to say one was from the NYTimes.) I won't take it personally if you don't believe it. 😉 But hey, if you find the original articles, I'd be happy to reread them. @@Waldorf-2020 Probably not wrong, the story makes more sense now. Thanks for answering. Did a short search for articles, but nothing from back then came up. You now have 2 gallons left in V. 3) Empty III and pour the remaining 2 gallons in V into the now empty III. 4) With 2 gallons in III, again fill V with 5 gallons. 5) Pour to fill III with the 2 gallons, this takes 1 gallon from the filled V, and you have 4 gallons left in jug V.
