Stargate was originally a book series or just a book, (I forget), which was set thousands, maybe millions of years in the past, on different planets across the universe. The story focused on god-like beings who created the Stargate technology of which the aliens in this movie use. The book has almost nothing to do with this movie other than the technology. I guess you could say it’s sort of a prequel to the movie’s story. These god-like entity’s actually inspired the Aliens to take on the Egyptian God motif.

Yeah but no. The show gimps Jackson's more general scientific intelligence (which is very evident in the film) simply to give Carter a niche to fill so that she isn't just a female version of O'Neill in her own segments. I get that the film was very male character heavy and the show needed some 'feminine energy' to balance it, but they didn't need to cut a major film character off at the knees to do it. Not to mention that Carter stood out as a very ridiculous character to me. She seemed to be potentially a very gifted scientist who basically pisses away her true potential to play GI Jane because she has massive daddy issues. There's one episode where she has a full blown expert in naquada reactors in her care - and instead of allowing the expert to show and tell her what to do, Carter turns it into some event of self discovery competition and turns the elegant and lightweight reactor design of the Orbanians into a chunky, HEAVY reactor that is likely less efficient. Tell me that doesn't sound patently stupid when the whole point of the stargate program is to acquire tech and allies to help fight the Goa'uld?! The plot hole just gets wider with every passing episode that they continue to use this same chunky design that Carter created herself.... just no. They seem to be so desperate to give Carter agency that they introduce these kind of major plot holes and never bother to fix them later. The film was PERFECT for what it was meant to be - a piece of entertainment based on quasi scifi fantasy pseudo history interpretations of ancient Egyptian archaeology.

It may simply be that I have always loved this movie, but I think this is my favorite reaction from the team. Especially the way the two of you offered your analysis of every aspect of the film. Since it was mentioned that their language wasn't given with translations, I wonder if either of noticed that once James Spader's character finally worked out the language and understood them, the subtitles were finally on screen and now we understand them, too. So glad you got this reaction on the channel. Thanks, guys!

this whole thread is absolute gold! this movie just made it to my watch list ^^ it is obvious, though - they are too much alike. I am guessing that Daniel might have become an inspiration of the nerdy hottie in general. James Spader gave that character one hell of a start. I absolutely adore Michael Shanks and he becomes a powerhouse of his own right later in the series but James Spader gave the character the exact right amount of awkwardness and depth that it needed to thrive. I am glad that SG-1 S01 has Michael attempt to play Daniel as close to Spader's version as possible - it made the transition easier (in the other direction too - I believe I saw the series before the movie)

The pilot of the TV series Stargate: SG-1 had three aims: 1.Get Daniel Jackson back 2. Set up the Bad guy and 3. Establish that the Stargate goes to many different worlds. Erik Avari. The show ran for 10 years and spawned 2 spin-offs Stargate: Atlantis & Stargate: Universe, and an animated series. In the extended cut of the movie we see a scene of General West showing Colonel O'Neil the remains of a palace guard that was found near the Stargate, so in that version the militiary are more aware of what the threat is.

I think that the biggest overlooked idea that this movie puts forward is that the alien Ra didn’t steal his name from Egyptian mythology, it’s the other way around. He and his Jaffa (soldiers) inspired the lore of the Egyptian gods and myth’s. Remember, Ra was on Earth 10,000 years ago. The Great Pyramids and Egyptian culture are only supposed to be around 5,000 years old.
@RaptorNX01
@RaptorNX01 3 ай бұрын
the pyramids were supposed to be around then, they were used as landing pads, but yeah, egyptian culture people are familiar with came around later. presumably rising from the ashes of the revolution that ousted their gods. tho its interesting how they ended up adopting those gods again anyway. I wonder if it was a case of them building a society, but then over time smaller sects, possibly worshipers of the old gods, took over.
@matthewgillies7509
@matthewgillies7509 3 ай бұрын
@@RaptorNX01the argument in the film is that there's some evidence that the culture is older than previously believed. Specifically, modern historians and theories have it that Egyptian culture arose following environmental and human migration changes in the region after the end of the last Ice Age. There is archaeological evidence for longtime human habitation in areas of the Sahara and elsewhere that is now completely inhospitable, but 7000 to 10,000 years ago would have been totally different to today. As such, the theory is that the Egyptians moved along the Nile following the increased rate of desertification, hence the high sophistication early on. In the film and the TV series, this is because of a few thousand years of Goa'uld domination and influence.
@michaelconnor1542
@michaelconnor1542 3 ай бұрын
Every few months we learn something new, that indicates that the pyramids and especially the Sphinx, are far older than previously thought. Modern Egyptians are not the descendants of the Builders. Ancient Egyptians had bone structures closer to Europeans. According to a highly regarded geologist who specializes in erosion. The evidence shows that the Spirit is no less than 12,000 years old, and could older than 24k.
@ryanhampson673

What’s really wild is there are ancient Egyptian records that have the names of their kings going back 40,000 years. Probably just mythology but what if there was a civilization during the last ice age and it was wiped out during the events of the younger dryas catastrophe.

I think its just a case of the show expanding things so much that when talking about "Stargate" in general the movie kinda gets drowned out because there is just so much to talk about. everything even slightly hinted at in the film gets fully explored in the show. and stuff that the show brought to the table was way beyond the scope of the film. its like how in star trek, until the JJ films and the new trek shows, most people would have no idea who Captain Pike was. even tho he was literally the first main character of all of star trek.

The cool thing about the language the people on the other planet speak is that the way Daniel learns it is accurate, as is his comment about getting the vowels right. Ancient Egyptians only wrote down consonants, not vowels (similar to Hebrew). While Egyptologists are reasonably certain about how the consonants sounded, the vowels that are between them are largely a guess based on distant descendants of the language. So once he was able to pick up the basics of the vowels from Shau’ri, he was able to converse with the locals thanks to his existing knowledge of Ancient Egyptian

Unfortunately yes - later episodes of the show confirm Jack was at home when his son was playing with his gun. It was unsupervised, unintended, and fundamentally shattered his family and his outlook moving forward. He was close to following his son into death. His character became about rule following, and military objectives. Its part of what made their team so good - each member brought a different pov from personal experience that merged to make them greater than the individual parts.

The TV shows are definitely my favorites, and with the movie being this good that tells you something. This was such a good reaction. I would love to see you two discover the series. You had great insight and understanding. Good job!

Great movie. Remember watching it in cinema. Someone said about it that time: Cost 50 million, looks 100 million and made 200 million in the box office. Spot on. Great movie with a great Kurt Russell. "Breakdown" is a great underrated gem of his. Or "Executive Decision".

even the people that made the show acknowledge the short-comings of the first season in the commentary tracks for later seasons. they also make fun of it directly in the show at points. but at the time, you had certain expectations for a tv shows based on movies, so in that context it held up pretty well and then later expanded on it and grew its own footing. its certainly not like today where tv shows of existing media are just continuations with 0 change in quality, even using the same actors.

Coy nailed it exactly, this movie and the series was loved by the older comic con going nerds. Most of us still go to cons!. I met the actor who plays Jack o'Neill in the tv show at a convention in Australia, such a nice guy. We got 10 years of the tv series, it was really well done as was the Atlantis series that followed it which Jason Momoa was known for. They are tied together, there was also a couple tv movies from the SG1 to wrap it up.

The first few seasons of Stargate tv were great, but the best have to be The Librarians, Buffy and Angel - even though the movie is not considered canon, Buffy the series begins a year after the events of the movie. There was an attempt to continue Stargate stuff by Emmerich. The effort didn't work out, but the script to that point was tweaked, then became Independence Day. The people who created the TV show had no Emmerich connections, and had no obligation to completely follow movie canon.

What's really wild is how seamlessly Micheal Shanks took up the role of Dr. Jackson on SG1. Atlantis ran 5yrs as a spin-off of SG1, which ran 10 years. SGU, don't ask. Richard Dean Anderson (Macgyver) played O'neill differently that Russell, but it worked.

The Script idea for Stargate started when an Writter made a book about how the Great Pyramids of Gyza, where in fact Alien landing zones for their ships or something like that. So the guy who wrote the script found it interesting and started to write a script with this in mind The whole "Ancient men din't have the technology to move multi tones stones on large distance back then, so they must have been aided by aliens" is not something that dates only from a Joe Rogan podcast with a Hack "scientist" as Guest, its a "theory" that as been around for decades. And this movie kickstarted the production of one of the greatest TV shows of all times, Stargate SG1.
