10:04: Willy and Nicky are wearing each other's uniform? I guess George wearing Nicky's uniform was not enough. By the time he became King, George did not maintain any correspondence with his cousins. The only letter he got from Nicky was a plea to help him, and the only letter he got from Willy was where the Kaiser called him a "Mad March Hare." While Willy and Nicky often wrote to each other, George was the most estranged. He deeply regretted the fact that he could not save his cousin, so he allowed Nicky's sisters to escape to Britain during the Russian Civil War.

This song dates back to the Franco-Prussian War, which forced France to cede Alsace and Lorraine to Germany, completing the unification of the Second Reich. It is fitting that France waves a black flag, because this was the war where they lost the greatest, before World War II.

I heard a story about this song. Probably not true but it' cool so I want to share it with you. We're in the early 1920's, just after the first world war. In a German bar, a pianist start playing this song. Slowly, the German folks, assembled here to forget their daily struggled, assembled here to live a bit and forget the hame of the defeat, start singing along. A British military patrol, stationed here to keep peace and occupy the land to avoid any risk of revolt, stops by the bar in the middle of the song. They simply sat on a table and drank their beers. Did nothing to stop the patriotic song. After the chant's end, while the common folks returned to their beers, the pianist went to the British soldiers. "Thank you for not interrupting this song despite not being Germans." "We are the watch on the Rhine" responded the British leading officer. I love this story because it reminds you how proud the Germans were still proud of themelves despite setting the world ablaze and the British decided to be good sports about it but still a bit sassy by reminding the Germans that they lost this war. Like every war they'd come across after that.

Well Germany didn't set the World ablaze on its own during the First World War, all major european powers started the war together.

More accurate Russian lyrics (I'm not Russian, so parts might still be off): The call sounds as distant thunder As clanging of swords and crashing of waves To the Rhein, to the Rhein, the German Rhein Rise up as its guardian Sleep soundly, beloved land Sleep soundly, beloved land With strong faith we protect, Protect our Rhein! With strong faith we protect, Protect our Rhein! And hundreds of thousands will move into rank Their eyes burn like flames. German, you are strong and pure Guarding your borders. Sleep soundly, beloved land Sleep soundly, beloved land With strong faith we protect, Protect our Rhein! With strong faith we protect, Protect our Rhein! He watches up, at the skies And our Gods are there at all times. Never, Rhein, shall we be seperated You'll remain German! Sleep soundly, beloved land Sleep soundly, beloved land With strong faith we protect, Protect our Rhein! With strong faith we protect, Protect our Rhein! While the blood flows, While in our hands is a steel dagger. Load the rifle once again, the enemy will not set ashore. Sleep soundly, beloved land Sleep soundly, beloved land With strong faith we protect, Protect our Rhein! With strong faith we protect, Protect our Rhein!

Full song (English): A cry resounds, like thunders' peal, Like crashing waves and swords of steel; To the Rhine! To the Rhine! To the German Rhine! Who will defend our stream, divine? Chorus: Dear fatherland, no fear be thine, Dear fatherland, no fear be thine, Firm and true stands the Watch, the Watch on the Rhine! Firm and true stands the Watch, the Watch on the Rhine! We stand, a hundred thousand strong, Quick to avenge our country's wrong, The German, pious, honest, and stark, Protects the sacred landmark! (Chorus) He looks upon the azure height, From which glance many a German Knight, And swears pugnaciously the oath: "Thou, Rhine, and I stay German both!" (Chorus) And if my heart breaks in this stand, You will never fall into French hands, As abundant as thy waters flood, So is Germany in heroes' blood! (Chorus) So long as we have blood to tun, So long as we can hold a gun, So long as we can wield a brand, No foe shall tread on the Rhine's sand! (Chorus) The oath resounds, on rolls the wave, The banners fly true, proud, and brave, Over the Rhine, the Rhine, the German Rhine! We will all defend our stream, though foes combine! (Chorus) So lead us, with your wide command, We will gladly give heart and hand, Hail Wilhelm! Down with all the brood! Repay our shame with German blood! Dear fatherland, no fear be thine, Dear fatherland, no fear be thine, Firm and true stands the Watch, the Watch on the Rhine! Firm and true stands the Watch, the Watch on the Rhine!
