Remember watching Maradona in 86. Without a doubt the greatest of all time. The amount of times he set up his teammates for what looked like easy chances, was absolutely crazy. He was targeted by defenders like nobody before. Some of the fouls committed were actually shocking with no action being taken by the officials. Never has there been a player that has dominated a tournament like this. Argentina had some good players for sure, however without Maradona pulling the strings they wouldn't have stood a chance. Maradona and Messi both have the ability to win a match on their own. That's why they are the greatest. Maradona faced tougher challenges than Messi on field as the rules were loose in that era . FIFA took care later on , so that the ball players can play their games, as that is where the beauty of football lies. I have seen both of them playing, and I can say Maradona faced MORE BRUTAL CHALLENGES FROM THE DEFENDERS in each and every match, almost twice in every 15-20 mins. People who have watched matches back then, will surely agree with me. As there was no star player in his team, the opponent targeted him, as they knew that stopping him will stop everything. Whereas in Messi's team, in Argentina, we have Higuain , De Maria and Aguero who are great players on their own.Same in Barcelona, Iniesta, Xavi etc are great players. Stopping Messi won't stop everything. So the defenders DOESN'T BRUTALLY CALLENGE MESSI , partly because of the TOUGHER RULES OF FIFA, partly because they are more professional now, they DONT HAVE ANY INTENTION TO INJURE A LEGENDARY PLAYER LIKE MESSI. But back then, everybody was Brutal. Some games were just unwatchable and disgusting ! Foul after foul after foul !!! Only who have watched those matches will realize what I am talking about . +Jack Harper Stupid hater ,I see on every video of Maradona . You hate him so much , but such big fan of Zidane ? Why ? He did nothing special on WC 98 till the Final , that's why main star of that tournament was Ronaldo. Zidane had good seasons at Juventus , great one actually in 97/98 , but still not on the same level like for example Maradona in 86/87 who not only orchestrated Napoli's game and was one of the top goal-scorers while not playing forward also won Seria A and Copa Italia same year , beating mighty Milan , Juventus and Inter. While Juventus in late 90s was best team in Seria A and still couldn't win CL with Zidane. He lost to Dortmund and Real 2 consecutive years. Finally won CL with Real who had stacked team while throughout the tournament not showing something exceptional really. Really only in 2002/03 season , on Euro 2000 , on WC 2006 and in season 97/98 he showed exceptional game throughout long period of time . In 98 WC he shined only in the Final . He is still one of the greatest football players in my opinion , but it's ridiculous that you act like he was miles above Maradona.

Competition in football is way bigger. Getting to be the best even for some years in football has much more merit than being the best in basketball history because of the amount of people that play each sport. Football is played worldwide, Basketball isnt.
