this really grinds my gears... some government official decides whether you can or cannot live in a house that you build on your property, just because of some stupid paperwork... they should be happy that young people like you actually want to live in the country and do everything they can to support you.

Your comment is naive. Their adventure is beautiful, but it is not the fault of a "civil servant" if the place is not habitable. Regulations on mountain sheepfolds and their operation or use in the Spanish and French Pyrenees have existed since long before their acquisition. It was put in place for two reasons: 1°)- because "newcomers or foreigners" took advantage of this lack of rules to buy and do anything anywhere, to the detriment of local inhabitants including "young people" who would also like to buy and live in their country. (in the 1970s/1980s). 2°)- Because these sheepfolds are often in so-called "classified" and "protected" areas These mountain sheepfolds are therefore now a "classified site" and are therefore subject to specific regulations put in place for the protection of the site and surroundings. When one of his properties is for sale (which is becoming increasingly rare because it is highly sought after), it is the candidate buyer's duty to find out beforehand about local regulations, and depending on his personal project, to buy or not to buy, instead of doing what he wants and then finding out it's illegal. (A mistake of youth that they will not reproduce again I think). Know that in these regions there are also "young people" as you say and that these are the first to want to buy to settle. unfortunately they can no longer do so because of the abuses I previously told you about and the regulations put in place since They are therefore just as penalized and yet come from this region. What country do you live in ? Do you have no building and residence rules in your country?

thanks for sharing your experience. i think to blame burocracy is misleading....as a buyer we have to ensure the land is habitable and by law if its rural then we know its not for building a house or permanent dwelling. its risky to assume they will give permits against the zoning. its bittersweet to see the opportunity to make good use of the land and give young people the chance to develop a sustainable farm and on the other hand follow the law for protected rural areas. wish you the best.

Living off the land is the most beautiful and sustainable form of existence, for now and for the future. yeah something was setting off red flags for me watching your timelapse video, i knew it wouldnt last very long and there would be problems. like just making a random cinderblock hut, you seemed to have the working utilities, but the cheap, lazy production seemed to be like no commitment to building. you spent more time and resources making more rows for your garden. you could have easily made a regular house with all the trees you cut down. instead you made a tool shed out of cinderblocks but hey atleast you got to pretend for the year you were committed to it

So sad..the discouragement of those who are quite out of touch with nature and countryside..popping the dreams of young people building up their homestead and populate the remote places in the land, make it fruitful and steward the land is mindboggling.. I hope you will find another piece of land that you are allowed to make your own and doing so encourage others, especially young people to live and love the land again. Peace out
