Outback owner.. sup fishing on nice days on lakes to just throw the 20lb board in the water and go. It has its place and it's fun. It's not a Hobie Outback replacement.

I never go out when the winds are more than 15km/hr. I have a kayak paddle attachment as well that helps on windy days. I use an anchor and fan cast out. That way I can focus on an area and conserve my energy. I use this method on the Great lakes here in canada

If you’re trying this again I’d recommend trying for rockfish around a jetty or rock pile. Might as well set an easy target for next time

I fish and dive from my paddle board. They' re best in clear water. I use a kayak paddle and I stand up most of the time. The visibility is what it is about.

why dont you try oyster point in winter when there is less wind? very doable then. stay stationary in one spot (over the honey hole using your fish finder or experience or where the birds are or where the dive map shows) and fish like that where is the 2nd spot?

Hmmm... the area Adam is ocean fishing is called Shark Park for the number of juvenile great white sharks that like to hang out there in the summer. Several companies run shark sighting tours there during the summer. No wonder he was nervous!

When it comes to Sharks Adam it's primarily the profile of the object above them, remember they feed on seals who's flippers move a certain way in water when viewed from below. A paddle board and a surfboard have similar profiles in the water, which is why I believe sharks hit surfers, plus they look for thrashing activity. It's just a guess on my part but I believe if a shark was to hit a kayak it would be a peddle type with the way they cause movement in the water. for us Kayak anglers there's probably more chance of getting hit by an idiot in a boat than a shark.

Wow, that’s really tough and challenging, I recommend stick with the kayak and its much safer. I can’t handle a inflatable craft specially using for fishing, i can’t imagine if the hook get caught on the surface of the paddle board.

I have not tried a SUP. I can say I think that you are over working the fluke. I get the majority of my Halibut by giving it 1 or 2 twitches after letting the current take it to the bottom on a 5-10 count pause, then a lift of 1-2 feet after the twitches. I think that I am imitating a bait dart up off the bottom to get food, chase the food until it is caught, then settling back to the bottom to swallow. The twitches are strong enough to start the hookset, cause that usually is when I become aware of the fish.

I think I will stick with my Hobie Outback for now..... I have seen guys out of Dana Point trolling while paddle boarding, but this was in the lee of a rockwall, so they were out of the roughest wind, and waves.

Someone told me that if you fish off a paddle board beyond the surf that the paddle board is considered a vessel and coast requirements for PFD and signaling devices apply. I haven't really looked into the truth of that statement.

I ,too thought about an inflatable sup, but decided against it after my float tube developed a pin hole while fishing. Not sure whether it was from an accidental hook rub or the spine of the fish I caught. Regardless, it was losing air and could have been bad. I decided to stay with the hard shell of a kayak since an accidental puncture is less likely. Stay safe!!!!
