That starter sound is the most joyous noise of my childhood. I learned to operate that JD 40c when I was 8, and it is still my favorite. It has no digging power, is slow as hell, and makes a small job take 4x longer. But I love it so much.

boy, just what i wished for. today is sunday , feb. 9. we had snow last night and i am waiting for it to end to clear the yard. i enjoy your format with your thinking out loud and quiet, careful work. lately i have been boiling out carburators in an attempt to not have to remove brass, that could go either way. we had those jds on our farm and liked them. we still have a 420 wide front, that gets used skidding logs to the mill. we had a 40 crawler and i did the steering clutches in it. when you remove the final drives, rotate the casting with the greatest of care. the clutch tubes are very thin and can be easily damaged, preventing the throw-out bearing from working. if you can get another strong man, consider removing the final drives by hand, and still be careful. if i can be of any help, just reach out. you have my sincere best wishes and respect.

A good explanation from Yesterdays Tractors... "It, like other two cylinder 6 or 12 volt Deeres, came from the factory POSITIVE GROUNDED but as a past used tractor dealer and one who farmed with two cylinder Deeres I saw many that got changed over. Most often if they got changed to alternators instead of generators then they went to Negative ground...If they got converted to Negative ground typically they had the ammeter leads and the ignition coil (battery powered ignitions) leads reversed. To be safe I would polarize the generator before starting once you install the new battery. If all is correct if you turn on lights and/or ignition not running before start up the ammeter should swing over to - discharge. If at the original positive ground on battery powered coil ignitions the - receives ignition switched voltage while the + wires to the distributor." John T

One of the best things you can do for that is to convert it to electronic ignition (assuming you switch to 12v). I had so much trouble with points in my old Ford backhoe until I did. I was constantly fighting points corrosion and it didn’t matter what brand I used, even NAPA Echlin. If it sat for any length of time, I had clean the points to get it to start. Since I converted it, it doesn’t matter how long I leave it, it’s starts right up every time. No more hassles!

Yeah our ford 800 has the electronic ignition. We will see, I will give the points a try.

23:47 I'm surprised the gas smell is the only problem Lisa has with all the machines being parked or ran inside the attached garage! You're a lucky man Tyler. I do agree though, I don't mind the smell of diesel at all or diesel exhaust(kinda love it, you know the feeling!) either, but the smell of gasoline especially old, stale gas is really bad. I bet the neighborhood Karen was really happy to see the Bobcat project get taken away on the trailer.........little did they know, you were just swapping it out for another machine though!!👍🏻😂 It's really nice that you have this multi-generational machine still in the family, still in working order, especially after sitting out in the field for so long. This is gonna be a nice little crawler machine when fixed up a bit. It'll be the perfect size to teach Luke on in a few more years too! He's gonna be such a smart, cool little kid with a Dad & Grampa like you guys. 37:23 I Love Luke's little Carhartt bibs! So cute. He is gonna be just like you! Keep videos coming

The little black button on the distributor cap is made of a carbon compound and contacts the rotor arm directly to transfer the current from the col to the distributor. If you can find one, i would totally replace the carburetor.

A good way to clean that rust out is to soak it in white vinegar (several hours depending on how rusty it is) then soak it for a couple of minutes in baking soda/water mix to neutralize the vinegar. Be good as new. I also use this method to clean full tanks .😊

In the beginning (lol), my memory bank would slowly and unfortunately sometimes painfully, collect a catalog of mechanical 'what-not-to-do' events for my young, self-made mechanical IQ. It is irritating for a mechanic having the handicap of not having the meticulous memory recall of dis-assembly for an error free re-assembly :). The simple and practical alternative is employing a memory mnemonic device by keeping your thoughts focused on the project at hand, not roaming from hither to tither, repeating the steps you are doing in your mind, or out-loud, naming the parts you are touching, and repeating the procedure a couple times after each group of dis-assembly. And, of course, doing the work without having any brain-altering substances on board is a plus, heh heh. It became obvious for me that the herbal past-time was severely retarding my memory retention so those bong and joint sessions had to be extinguished for good. Eventually, you can train your brain to automatically catalog the events, making them available for recall even over a long period of time without any conscious effort. You cannot recall an event that was failed to be cataloged when your thoughts were not in that thought process. That process led me up the path of enjoying the greener pastures of becoming a bonafide professional heavy equipment mechanic/operator, truck driver, welder, etc., etc., to construction supervisor/engineer. The thread lock on brass and aluminum to steel, (and the seized fasteners from corrosion), can be best addressed first with some shock vibration therapy before resorting to and including some heat therapy. Placing your screwdriver in the slot of the brass part and hitting it with a hammer a few times hard enough to effect it, and almost, but not hard enough to break it, then hitting your screwdriver while you are applying removal torque will work cleaner than trying to bull-force it from it's seat. A one-way jet can be left alone and just cleaned out with a torch tip cleaner or small wire. A venturi usually has side ports/passages that connect it to the float reservoir that has to be cleared. Blowing carb cleaner thru the ports will tell you if they have continuity. (Mustie1 puts his carbs in the ultra-sonic for a few hours and has success removing the stubborn venturi and brass parts. Soaking the part in carb cleaner a couple days, then repeating the impact therapy may do the trick. If they still wont budge, using small wire to snake thru the ports and passages to the venturi then spraying with the carb cleaner tube can be your the final option. If all that fails, then drilling it out the venturi is redundant if you don't have a replacement part. The last resort is drilling the venturi tube out close to the threads. Don't waste time on those skinny easy-outs, they are very hard but very brittle, and break easy, lol. [Don't over-drill it and wipe out the threads :)]. You can grind a groove in a crack in a carburetor and fill it with some super-duper JB-Weld. On the bigger rust seized bolts you can grind a 3/8" or 1/2" socket square on an air impact bit from the small air-hammer to fit into sockets. Weld a 90 degree handle to the bit that you can turn as you apply air impact force to your seized bolt. You can hit the head of the bolt with your impact extension too before you apply removal torque. If you have to use heat, be mindful of the fact that the heat is annealing the metalic structure and weakening the crystalline bond of its molecules. The high heat is making the molecular structure malleable allowing the steel's molecules easier to displace, allowing the bolt to break with less force. Spray water on a heated red-hot bolt to flash-shrink it and re-harden it. Apply some heat to temper it's hardness, then allow it to cool slowly. Hit it with some hammer blows or air-impact. Mechanical engineering is the study of the anatomy of physics, or the physical substances of the Earth's elements, their characteristics, personalities, their rules of engagement and unions, and the events that divorces them.

Interesting old machine, seems a shame it was left outside given its history. Distributor caps, they all have a carbon rod or in the case of that cap it looks like a captive ball of carbon at the centre pole of the dizzy cap. This acts a brush (like in an electric motor) or conduit which transfers the high voltage current from the coil via a HT lead to the distributor cap centre pole to the rotor arm. And because the carbon is touching the top of the rotor arm that rotates the current then changes to a spark in order to jump the gap to the HT leads going from the distributor (Dizzy as we call it in the UK) cap to the spark plugs. And then BANG you have ignition!
