Diesel engines are the lifeblood of our infrastructure. From Lorries that transport our food and fuels, through to agricultural tractors that farm our crops or power our ships. Some trains and all buses and coaches. To this day they are still the most efficient way to transport weight in terms of energy production and output. They’re more efficient now than ever before. They do produce far less CO2 than petrol equivalents but they do produce more Nox and Soot. I think it’s the soot that can contribute to lung cancer and other illnesses. Personally I will continue to own diesel vehicles, or at least one in my household for our long distance journeys. Our Euro6 XC60 does around 18,000 miles per year, averages 52mpg on combined journeys and never misses a beat.

There is no smog in the UK. ULEZ and similar schemes are just money-making cons. I've just come back from Indonesia where I go regularly and the air-quality bedwetters should take a trip to somewhere like Jakarta if they want to know what pollution is. The UK has never been cleaner. I have the latest model BMW X5 30d and I love it. It is not noisy - you can barely hear the engine it's so quiet - and it's smooth and fast. However, I've been considering changing it for a petrol or PHEV version. Not because I have any problems with diesel - simply because as you said, it's only a matter of time before lefty council morons decide I can't drive in their city or have to pay a fee to help their bankrupt council coffers.

Really good video and your comments were all spot-on. I had a 2005 VW Golf 1.9 TDi, the one with the pukka PD engine, and it would regularly give me 80+ mpg on the motorway, and give 800 miles from a full tank. And super reliable engine too. Man I miss that car. I now have a 320d which isn’t as economical.
@car_babble

Interestingly enough, my last car was a 320d. MPG were ok but not as good as my old Volvo but it was mighty fun in the bends. 80 mpg is insane and really blows the argument out of the water to really drive anything else outside of the city.

I've owned my little diesel for 13 years, I love it, it's so economical, so cheap to run, it's a Euro 5, 80g/km, I can't go into places like Bristol because it's dirty yet my friend can drive his Range Rover 4.4 litre turbo diesel into Bristol even though it emits 200g/km. I stopped going into Bristol because of the clean air taxes and the fact that I can't pay the clean air taxes with cash yet it's a tax. I bought my car because it is cheap to run, my daily commute is 60 miles round trip of which just over 50 miles of which is motorway, recently myself and a friend had to go from Somerset to Portsmouth, the whole trip cost me around £30, my friend with his electric vehicle got to Portsmouth and had to recharge, it cost him £71, he had to recharge on the way back. I couldn't afford an electric vehicle, I don't have access to off road parking so wouldn't be able to charge at home, I work nights so wouldn't see the advantage of night charging. I've covered 160,000 miles in my 3 cylinder diesel, my car was clean at the time that I bought it, I bought it at 5 months old, the road tax is zero, my motorbike costs around £120 per year. My car is a small workhorse, it's cheaper to run than any other choice of vehicles at present. I drove a Corsa electric, I was very impressed, I have nothing against electric vehicles, yes the screens for dashboards confuse me, honestly I don't understand them, where I live, the infrastructure just isn't there, the cost of public charging is more expensive than running an electric vehicle, and again, I don't have cards, I've always paid for everything with cash including my diesel, I wouldn't be able to do that with an electric vehicle, if I could afford an electric vehicle, the infrastructure was there, public charging wasn't more expensive than running a petrol or diesel vehicle and I could pay with cash, it would be an option, luckily I'm getting on in years, if I make the 2030 ban on sales of internal combustion engined vehicles, if they ever do get banned completely, I won't be around for that day I hope

Probably the most balance take I've heard on here about the state of the situation, everyone seems so fanatical about it on both sides. EV's are definitely a good option for many, half of my family has them are happy with them. One area I can comment on where I think they've dropped the ball is commercial, and especially where I live in Sheffield. They've created the "clean air zone" that covers anywhere on, or inside the outer ring road for any commercial vehicle under a euro 6 diesel. This causes a lot of problems with some basic trades, like plasterers, decorators, scaffolders. removals and gardeners etc. The main issue is that they can't afford new, especially with the prices now, and were always the people who would buy the 2nd or 3rd hand ex fleet vans. But buying a euro 6 that's out of warranty is a gamble they don't want to take and I can't blame them, euro 5's gave enough headaches. The engines have been strangled for emissions, undersized 1.5 twin turbos, ad blue, DPF's, electronics, not to mention the wet belts, every repair (and there are many) seems to be a £2k+ job, that's if you can find a mechanic who can even fix it. A lot of vans that should have another 5+ years of life in them are going prematurely to the scrapyard. What a lot are doing is buying decent condition euro 4's which are holding their price even against older CAZ compliant euro 6's and just not working in the inner city, or billing customers the £10 per day fee (even to just go quote). Not sure how the next road tax hike will effect them, but it's all getting a bit out of hand. Commercial BEV's just aren't up to job.

In my diesel I can go from Staffordshire to the Loire valley on one tank (616 miles) and run about a bit before needing to refuel for the trip home. When an EV can do something similar I may consider one. It’s the recharging kerfuffle and the time it takes that puts me off.

Based on the Isle of Wight now, I’ve just gotten my first EV. previous to that I’ve had two Golf GTEs and could plug them in every day, reason for change, seldom used the engine and it never really got up to temp here. Previous had a 2L petrol TSI Octavia VRS and that was my bus between the IOW, Glasgow and Edinburgh for years, and well I didn’t go diesel as local driving in Glasgow, the IOW a DPF wouldn’t stand a chance let alone adblu injection. Is an EV better… strange swing really isn’t it, the being its are a person by person case, still have my 02 DISCO TD5, two and four stroke motorbikes mind 😂

A diesel will always be around 30% more efficient than petrol, the fuel is more energy dense and the combustion process more efficient. Modern euro6 diesel are also very close on NOx to petrol and produce 50% less CO, much more poisonous than CO2. The issues with diesel is short journeys but if you regularly do long journeys diesel is still king. I've had a BMW 335D for 8 years, great performance, 45+ mpg and after 8 years without finance it owes me nothing. Other than servicing during my ownership it's cost £130 in repairs 🙂

ULEZ is just another tax on the motorists air flows all around the world and does not just stay in one area, so fumes / pollutants from all motor vehicles and industrial plants, volcanoes etc get mixed in with the air and would be diluted to some degree!

A few iissues with diesels. i) even in small towns and villages, diesel emissions can reach quite high levels in specific locations at specific times - the classic example is outside schools at the start and end of schools days. ii) the levels of emissions claimed by manufacturers, and tested by the MOT and tests such as EURO 6, have very little credibility. So many manufacturers have been caught so many times cheating on diesel emissions in so many ways, that many have no faith in these numbers. iii) the torque advantage is a bit of a red herring. Although diesel engines can produce higher torque at the flywheel than petrol cars of a similar capacity, this is irrelevant when towing, what matters is torque at the wheels, and this is a function of power output and gearing.

I'll list them: 1. Tesla Model 3: The most boring and uninspiring car I've ever driven. 2: Polestar 2, same but worse. 3: Porsche Taycan. Horrible. Weird. And I hate it when people say they're "fast." ..... they're only fast if you've never driven properly fast cars. There's plenty of 300bhp plus hot hatches, for example, that weigh less than half an EV and are WAY more entertaining. And a good recent one will cost you between £15k and £20k.
